Some Things Change, Some Things Stay the Same...
By Erik Olson
Back when I was in the Marine Corps (cue wistful, faraway look and old man grumble), our main source of printed humor came from the "Dunk's Almanac" series of books by Major Gene Duncan. They were collections of ribald "sea stories" with a non-PC humorous bent. Fast-forward to the 21st-century, and it appears that Major Duncan's place has been usurped by a salty former Lance Corporal named Maximilian Uriarte and his popular Marine Corps Times comic strip, "Terminal Lance."

In this collection of the first 100 Terminal Lance strips (with additional commentary by the author), Mr. Uriarte highlights some of the more absurd aspects of the Marine Corps, a number of which still resonate with me almost twenty-five years since I left the service. Dodgy recruiters, overzealous boots, pointless uniform changes, endless formations, field day games, officer and staff NCO antics, and the mixed emotions of becoming a civilian again still occur with monotonous regularity, all perfectly captured by "Terminal Lance" ("Lance" refers to the E-3 rank of Lance Corporal; "Terminal" means being stuck at said rank forever despite good performance).

Also fascinating are the strip's depictions concerning the influence of technology that my generation of Marines never dealt with, like email, cell phones, and social media. When Mr. Uriarte askes in the commentary how the Corps ever got along without these advances in communication, I had to laugh and answer, "just fine - probably made it easier for us to skate." I found these modern aspects of the Corps as portrayed by "Terminal Lance" to be the most interesting, as I could imagine myself as a young troop having to deal with them right along with Abe and Garcia, the strip's main characters.

Of course, "Terminal Lance" also touches on Middle East deployment, which seems to have widened the rift between front-line troops and support personnel. Sure, Mr. Uriarte loves the Corps and stops short of slamming it as an institution, but I suppose there will always be a bit of a rift between Grunt and POG (Persons Other than Grunt, naturally). It's the nature of the beast, but as one of the despised POG class who never got to deploy during the First Gulf War I just have to shrug my shoulders and move on.

I'm a new reader of "Terminal Lance", and I can't help but wonder why no one was ever inspired to create something like it until 2010. Kudos to Mr. Uriarte for finally getting it done and crafting an excellent and humorous window into the daily life of a typical Marine non-rate. I've also enjoyed checking out the "Terminal Lance" website and catching up with more recent strips, and I recommend you do the same after buying this fine collection.

It's good

Here's the scuttlebuttt. Teufelhundens, Devil Dogs, Devil Docs, Farts Sacks, Belleau Woodsmen, Ghost Turd Chasers, Fat Bodies, Deep Sea Divers, Boots, Sr.Lances, and Lifers alike will enjoy this ribald humor! Such frivolity hasn't been seen since Presley O'Bannon's first Med Float! The artwork alone would make Opha Mae Johnson herself lose her corframs. 5 stars good sirs!
