Madea—Southern-speak for "mother dear"—is the fierce alter ego of Tyler Perry, who has paraded the marijuana-smoking, pistol-packing, trash-talking matron through a series of hit gospel plays and films. Although primarily a comic figure based on unapologetically crude behavior coming from a harmless-looking old lady, Madea is envisioned by Perry (who provides his own introduction before turning the reins over to his inner grandma) as a throwback to a time when strong matriarchs ruled the community. The result is a surprisingly fresh compilation of homespun advice—which Madea says the reader should take "at your own risk"—on love, sex, getting ahead in life and (strangely) the thousand-plus uses of Vaseline. Although veering dangerously close to serious at times, Perry litters Madea's anarchic, stage-ready monologues with hilariously bad quips along the lines of "the grass is always greener on the other side, but the water bill is higher." Tyler Perry is a playwright, producer, director, composer, and actor. He is the creative force behind ten theatrical productions that have toured nationally. He is also the writer, producer, and star of the recent number-one hit movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman. His second feature film Madea's Family Reunion, which he wrote, produced, directed, and stars in, is scheduled for release in February 2006. Tyler Perry has done it once again!

Tyler Perry has impressed us once again with him great take on the well known, loud-mouth black women, Madea. This time it is not a movie, or a musical, its a book. A book about the ways of living life through the eyes of Madea. It includes countless hours non stop laugh out loud enjoyment. I am a musical theatre artist (actor, singer and dancer) so i can appreciate a good character when i see one. Even if your not interested in reading, trust me, you won't want to put the book down! I give it five stars, well thought out and hilarious. And hey, you'll never know, maybe you could actually learn a thing or two from Madea, it is filled with amazing tips for the real world and life. I loved it... you'll love it. Five stars all around.

Tyler Perry's Madea is a wonderful character

My little sister told me about many of Tyler Perry's movies. Madea seems to be a central figure, yet she isn't the main character in most of the films. I found I looked more forward to her appearances on screen then the rest of the cast. When I found that a book had been written based on Madea's philosophies on life. I bought 2, one for me and one for my Little sister. Tyler Perry always has a good message, leaning towards the good book. In fact Madea likes to quote the book of "Deuteronimo" (her words, not mine) often. When I read her view on Jesus walking on water I about blew a lung out laughing.. When she talks about ruining one of Josephine Baker's costumes, I decided then and there to make sure I have had nothing to drink for about an hour before..
This is not a book for children or conservatives.. Note that there is a liberal view on a certain medicinal plant.
But, it all seems tongue and cheek, not an endorsement.
I give it 4.5 stars, but not quite 5.

In true Big Mama fashion Madea tells you like it is and doesn't beat around the bush. She's sensitive but direct. You may think you're grown but she's gonna teach you some things that your mother may have missed. After listening to this audiobook I'm starting to feel like I'm getting advice from a man with a woman's voice. Madea has the kind of prospective that I just don't get from other women, not even my closest sisters.

Pointless Publication

Having pre-ordered this book, I was very disappointed when I actually received it. It is far too short to justify the effort and material required for constructing a cover around the content. The information contained in the book should have been laid out in a set of web pages in order to be useful. This would have made sense considering that the book intends to provide information about public online data sources.

For each public data source listed in the book, the description is a title, a short paragraph describing the data source, and a URL or curl request. In some cases a json or xml response from the service is shown. This level of detail is disappointing and uninteresting (IMHO).

In the preface the author references a website listing public sources of information, [...]. The API directory on this website contains far more sources of data than this book (which lists about 57 or so). My advice would to someone looking for public data sources would be to start at that website and not to waste money on this book.

very disappointing

This book is extremely disappointing and has precious little information about the data sources listed. It's really just a list of links spun out in a criminally overpriced book. Do not buy the printed version. At $30, it is basically $1 per page. Yes, that's right. The book only has 32 pages!!! Perhaps the electronic version is worth the price, but even that is debatable.

this book should never have been printed a digital copy would be enough ... at least that could save some typing...
and there is not enough value for the price that it has been sold for ... there is nothing special in this book that anyone who are interested in apis dont already know I gave it one star only for the cover design

Applying economic analysis to the subjects of the political scientist, sociologist, and economist, Mancur Olson examines the extent to which the individuals that share a common interest find it in their individual interest to bear the costs of the organizational effort.The theory shows that most organizations produce what the economist calls “public goods”―goods or services that are available to every member, whether or not he has borne any of the costs of providing them. Economists have long understood that defense, law and order were public goods that could not be marketed to individuals, and that taxation was necessary. They have not, however, taken account of the fact that private as well as governmental organizations produce public goods.The services the labor union provides for the worker it represents, or the benefits a lobby obtains for the group it represents, are public goods: they automatically go to every individual in the group, whether or not he helped bear the costs. It follows that, just as governments require compulsory taxation, many large private organizations require special (and sometimes coercive) devices to obtain the resources they need.This is not true of smaller organizations for, as this book shows, small and large organizations support themselves in entirely different ways. The theory indicates that, though small groups can act to further their interest much more easily than large ones, they will tend to devote too few resources to the satisfaction of their common interests, and that there is a surprising tendency for the “lesser” members of the small group to exploit the “greater” members by making them bear a disproportionate share of the burden of any group action.All of the theory in the book is in Chapter 1; the remaining chapters contain empirical and historical evidence of the theory’s relevance to labor unions, pressure groups, corporations, and Marxian class action.

There is now a considerable body of literature which attempts to apply economic analysis to political problems. In my opinion, Olson's is one of the most successful and provocative of these attempts. Olson's central insight is novel and illuminating to political scientists and he shows that by the use of it he can give familiar facts (about labor unions, farm organizations, and other interest groups) new meaning. I believe that his work is going to force the jettisoning of much of what has been said about interest groups and the revision of the rest. How to Explain History

Many people discuss the influence of groups, but few really understand why some groups have are more effective than others. Mancur Olson crafted subtle and persuasive arguments explaining why special interest groups are often so effective. People participate in groups according to the expected marginal costs and benefits. Problems with group action emerge when we consider externalities and public goods provision within groups.

Olson's theory is applied to labor unions, corporations, and other pressure groups. Olson also has a critique of Marxian class theory which drives one more nail into the coffin of communism. The Logic of Collective Action is important because it explains so much about how real groups have functioned throughout history. Pressure groups date back to the ancient world, and Olson's theory fits very well with this experience.

Olson's ideas need further dissemination because most people get the special interest issue wrong. Most people recognize that pressure groups are often pernicious. But all too many people think that undue special interest influence is just a current phase that can be dealt with in a simple manner. This book indicates that we really should reconsider the role of government in society, especially at the Federal level. Olson is certainly not an anarchist, he insists that there are some things that government can and should do. However, the inevitability of special interest influence does make it impossible for government to function as many would like it too. Read this book along with Gordon Tullock's The Politics of Bureaucracy. Olson and Tullock enable us to make greater sense of world history.

GREAT LOGIC, CLEARLY WRITTEN ARGUMENT

Mancur Olson's The Logic of Collective Action is one of the best arguments I have read on the theory of groups. Given its age (it was originally written in the 1960s), it does not include much of the later scholarship on the subject.
However, it is a great introduction to collective action, as the basic argument has not changed: groups in which the benefits from collective goods cannot be denied to people are very difficult to organize. Organization will more lilkey come about when there is one (or a small number of) individual whose cost of action is lower than his own expected benefits; this leads to an exploitation by the small of the large, which is an interesting and counterintutive situation.
Olson provides a wide array of examples, which are of course old but nonetheless relevant. Examples include farming organizations, trade unions, business pressure groups, medical associations, etc. Overall, I found this book to be very interesting and easy to read, as the economics hardly ever go beyond basic math. For people who like rational arguments, it will be a pleasure to read this. The most interesting portion of the book, in my opinion, is the author's argument why Marxism does not work in practice in the way that Marx predicted.

Fascinating, if a little technical.

Anyone interested in how the world of groups and organizations work should read this book. Even by the author's admission it's technical, and hard to follow at times if you're not an economist. But the theories and explanations are well worth the effrot because they explain in a "non-partisan" ways many things you may have wondered about, and will now see with a new perspective.

Great Read Aloud

I use this in my 3rd grade Spanish. Immersion class to teach civics and the voting process. It is easy to understand and a great read aloud. We then produce it as a readers' theatre production and invite the parents to watch us tell the story. Students share parts in each scene. One of my favorite authors! The Spanish translation is "spot" on!
