Defining the National Interest: Conflict and Change in American Foreign Policy (American Politics and Political Economy Series), by Peter

The United States has been marked by a highly politicized and divisive history of foreign policy-making. Why do the nation's leaders find it so difficult to define the national interest?

Peter Trubowitz offers a new and compelling conception of American foreign policy and the domestic geopolitical forces that shape and animate it. Foreign policy conflict, he argues, is grounded in America's regional diversity. The uneven nature of America's integration into the world economy has made regionalism a potent force shaping fights over the national interest. As Trubowitz shows, politicians from different parts of the country have consistently sought to equate their region's interests with that of the nation. Domestic conflict over how to define the "national interest" is the result. Challenging dominant accounts of American foreign policy-making, Defining the National Interest exemplifies how interdisciplinary scholarship can yield a deeper understanding of the connections between domestic and international change in an era of globalization.

Colby Richardson—Cole to his friends and family—pushed his wide-brimmed Resistol back on his head and muttered a word he normally reserved for dire circumstances and locker room banter as he stood in the feedlot of the Double R Ranch and surveyed the damage to the outbuildings. His gaze strayed to the empty space where, up until six months ago, the main barn had stood. The debris had been cleared away, but it did little to erase the memory of seeing the barn he and his brother used to play in reduced to a pile of broken boards and splintered beams. The deadly twister that had leveled parts of downtown Royal, Texas, and several other small communities close by had skipped its way across the west Texas landscape, laying waste to everything in its path—including part of his family's ranch.

Glancing over his shoulder at the ranch house, he shook his head as he amended that thought. It didn't belong to his family anymore. When their father passed away a few years back, the ranch had gone to Cole's twin brother, Craig. Now it belonged to Craig's widow, Paige.

He sighed heavily as guilt and regret settled over him. He had always hoped that one day he and his estranged twin would be able to put the anger and resentment aside and, at the very least, establish a semblance of a relationship. After all, they were only thirty-two. There should have been plenty of time for that. But when the tornado tore its way through the area, his brother's time had run out, and with his passing any possibility of reconciliation between them had been brought to an end.

The devastation and loss of property were one thing, but the death of Craig—along with six other souls at the Royal town hall that day—was another. Cole and his business partner, Aaron Nichols, had used their Dallas-based construction company to help rebuild the town and make repairs to damaged property. But there wasn't a damned thing anyone could do to bring back the lives that had been lost. He wished with everything that was in him that there was.

Taking a deep breath, Cole unclipped the cell phone on his belt. He had put off making the repairs to the Double R long enough. The construction crew he had assigned to rebuild the Lone Star Bar and Grill would complete that job by the end of the day and could start on the repairs to the Double R first thing in the morning.

As he relayed the work order to the crew foreman and clipped the phone back onto his belt, he watched his sister-in-law leave the house and start across the yard toward him. A knot the size of his fist twisted his gut. The moment he'd learned about the tornado and Craig's death, he had rushed back to his hometown to do whatever he could to help Royal recover and to help Paige get through making the funeral arrangements for his brother. Right away it had become apparent that he'd have to keep his interaction with her brief and he knew she had to be confused by the strained encounters. But he hadn't anticipated the effect she still had on him.

The first time he'd laid eyes on her in his senior year of high school, Cole had been fascinated with her. Tall and willowy, she moved like a graceful dancer, and as he watched her walk toward him now, he found himself just as captivated as the day they'd first met. The slight breeze played with her long auburn hair and he couldn't help but wonder how the soft wavy strands would feel as he ran his fingers through them.

"I didn't realize you were coming by today, Cole," Paige said, smiling as she walked up to him. She used the name his family called him and it suddenly occurred to him, she was the only family he had left.

Shaking his head to dispel the last traces of his ridiculous introspection, Cole forced himself to concentrate on the reason for his visit to the Double R.

"I've scheduled one of the R&N work crews to start rebuilding your barn and making repairs to the other outbuildings first thing in the morning."

"Have the construction crews you brought with you from Dallas finished all of the work on the other projects first?" she asked. She had been adamant that the repairs the Double R needed could wait until permanent housing for the displaced families who had lost everything during the storm had been taken care of. Her selflessness hadn't surprised him in the least.

He nodded. "Aaron is in charge of overseeing those crews, but he assured me the last of the houses R&N Builders are contracted to rebuild will be finished by the end of the month."

"Good." She shaded her pretty gray eyes from the midafternoon sun with one delicate hand. "Stella and I were talking the other day about how important it is to get the families back into homes of their own and reestablish a sense of permanence and normalcy," she said, referring to Stella Daniels, the town's acting mayor and his business partner's new wife. "Children need that sense of belonging after what they've been through and all they've lost."

Cole detected the compassion in her tone. One of her most compelling and attractive traits had always been her thoughtfulness for others and he realized she hadn't changed much over the years. Paige was still the considerate, caring woman with a mile-wide soft spot for kids she had been in high school. It was a real shame that she hadn't had any children of her own. When she'd married his brother, she'd been pregnant.

Unfortunately, she had miscarried only a few weeks later and, to Cole's knowledge, she'd never become pregnant again. He fleetingly wondered why, but he wasn't about to ask. Cole had never been one to pry and he wasn't about to start now. What had happened between Paige and Craig during their ten-year marriage was their business, not his.

Not knowing much about what little kids needed, Cole nodded. "I guess it's important for them to feel that security."

"I think we all need that," she agreed, smiling sadly. "But especially after the tornado tore up everything familiar to us."

"How are you doing?" he asked, barely resisting the urge to put his arms around her for a comforting hug. It had to be extremely hard for her to lose her husband at such a young age and in such an unexpected way.

"I'm okay," she said, her gaze straying to the distant horizon. "In the past several years, Craig had had to go out of town on business a lot, so I'm used to spending time alone. But I always knew he would eventually be coming back home." Turning to meet his gaze head-on, she added, "It's knowing that won't ever happen and that I'm truly alone in the world that's the most difficult to deal with."

"I know it's been a big adjustment." Cole stated the obvious.

He wasn't sure what kind of business Craig had been involved in that would require a cattle rancher to make frequent trips out of town. But then he didn't know much about his brother's life beyond the fact that he belonged to the Texas Cattleman's Club—the same as Cole and most of their friends. Cole had even convinced Aaron to join the Dallas chapter after they had become friends and gone into business together. The connections they had made through their involvement with the TCC, as well as their reputation for excellence in quality and value, had helped propel R&N Builders to become one of the premier construction companies in the state.

They remained silent for several long moments before Paige glanced toward his truck. "Did you bring your things with you?"

"No, I'll just stay at the Cozy Inn," Cole answered, shrugging. "I have to get up pretty early and I wouldn't want to disturb you."

When he'd returned to Royal six months ago, Paige had offered for him to stay at the ranch while he was in town, but he had declined. He'd told her that it would be easier for him to stay close to the job sites where his construction crews worked. But the real reason he had stayed in Royal instead of at the ranch was due to the attraction he still felt whenever he was around her.

Paige gave him one of those looks that a woman gives a man when she thinks he's being overly obtuse. "Think about it, Cole. I live on a working cattle ranch. I get up before dawn every morning to give the hired hands a list of things I want done for the day."

"Don't you have a foreman to do that?" he asked, frowning.

"I do, but he's still dealing with his injuries from the tornado." She shook her head. "He was in the barn when the storm moved through and it's a miracle he survived. I assured him that he would have a job once he recovered, so I'm taking over for him until he's able to return to work."

"Couldn't you have one of the other men act as foreman until he recovers?" Cole asked.

"I could have, but with Craig gone I need to stay busy," she answered. "Besides, I want to learn more about managing the ranch since I'm going to be running it alone."

"You could always sell out and move into town," he suggested.

She looked directly at him. "I did think about it. But this is my home now and I prefer the country quiet over the sounds of a busy town."

Cole couldn't fault her for that. He had grown up on the ranch and when he'd gone away to college, it had taken him most of his first semester to get used to the noise of a bustling campus. Now, living in Dallas, he spent most of his weekends in a fishing cabin on a nearby lake just to get a little peace and quiet.

"Living in town would be closer to the charities you're involved in," he said, shrugging.

He hadn't discussed anything about her future plans with her since Craig's death. For one thing, he had made sure not to spend too much time with her once it became clear he was still attracted to her. And for another, it really wasn't any of his business what decisions she made or where she lived.

"And staying here at the ranch instead of driving back and forth to the Cozy Inn would be closer for you while your work crew rebuilds my barn and makes the repairs to the outbuildings," she shot back. "You said yourself that you liked to be close to the job sites you're in charge of overseeing. You couldn't get any closer to the job than staying here."

He hadn't expected her to turn the tables on him and use his excuse not to stay at the ranch against him. "I wouldn't want to impose," he hedged.

She shook her head. "That's ridiculous, Cole. This was your home long before it was mine."

Cole didn't want to go into the fact that he really hadn't missed the home he grew up in. He had too many memories of the altercations he had been in with Craig to be overly sentimental about it.

"But it's your home now," he countered.

"And I'm inviting you to stay here," she said, giving him a smile that caused every one of his male senses to go on high alert. "It will give us the chance to catch up."

As he stared at her, Cole realized that he'd run out of plausible excuses. He couldn't tell her the real reason behind his reluctance to stay at the ranch with her. She would probably think he was crazy, and to tell the truth, he really couldn't say she would be all that far off the mark. It was absolutely insane to be so damned attracted to his late brother's wife.

Resigned, he finally nodded. "All right." He turned toward his truck. "I'll bring my things with me tomorrow morning when we start the job."

"Would you like to stay for dinner?" she asked, walking beside him.

"Thanks for the offer, but Stella has a town council meeting and I promised I'd meet Aaron for dinner at the TCC clubhouse to discuss business." He felt guilty when he noticed the disappointment she couldn't quite cover with her smile.

"Okay, then I'll see you tomorrow morning," she said, turning toward the house.

"I'll be here for the next couple of weeks or so," he felt compelled to tell her. Maybe knowing it wouldn't be just a night or two would change her mind about having a houseguest for such an extended period. "Before I leave to go back to Dallas, you'll probably get tired of looking at me over the dinner table."

His words didn't seem to discourage her. If anything, her smile brightened. "I'll plan on making something special for dinner tomorrow evening to welcome you back home."

Cole's guilt at avoiding her the past six months increased tenfold as he watched her walk up the back porch steps to enter the house. He knew Paige had to be lonely. Her parents had both passed several years ago, and with Craig gone, charity work could only go so far to fill in the empty hours of a day. She was obviously anticipating having someone to talk to for a change.

Climbing into his truck, Cole started the engine and drove down the lane to the main road. The next few weeks were going to be a true test of his fortitude. From the time he'd seen her walking down the hall at Royal High School all those years ago, he had wanted nothing more than to make her his girl. But it was too late for that. She had married his brother and, even though he and his twin had never gotten along and hadn't spoken in more than ten years, Cole wasn't about to disrespect Craig's memory or his marriage to Paige.

Will her husbands brother be her love, yet once again.
By Alexia Janie Evans
"For His Brother's Wife" by Kathie DeNosky is the continuation of the 'Texas Cattleman's Club After the Storm' series. It is a quick, easy read that can be read on it's own or as part of the series. After a Tornado tears apart the city of Royal, TX we are introduced to the citizens of the town and what they are going through to rebuild and take back their lives.

Paige Richardson lost her husband in the tornado, and his Fraternal twin brother Colby Richardson returns to help the town rebuild. It has been many years since Colby has been in Royal. As you read this story you'll find out why he stayed away, but Paige and Colby really liked each other in high school until she married his brother. Will the ghosts of the past come back to haunt them, and continue to keep them apart?

Definitely a MUST READ. Love the series myself and I recommend them all but if you're just starting to read this series you'll be able to keep up.

L O V E D I T ! ! !
By NanaCav
This was a quick read but a most enjoyable one. Paige Richardson's husband, Craig, died during a recent tornado that tore through their Texas ranch. It has been six months since the tornado and Craig's twin, Cole, has arrived at what was once his childhood home to make repairs from the storm.

Cole had always loved Paige but his evil twin always went after whatever it was that Cole had or wanted. Back then it happened to be Paige. She was pregnant with Craig's baby and at that time the proper thing to do was get married....and they did. But neither loved the other and Paige had told herself that marriage was forever. She made the best of a bad situation.

Once Cole returned all the old feelings returned for both of them even though they each tried to fight them. I don't want to say more and spoil it for you. There is a lot more to tell so you will just have to pick it up and read it for yourself.

Like a New Pair of Glasses
By Mr. Greg
A great read. This is a keeper, for sure. I will be keeping it nearby to use for inspiration. I have almost all of Steve's books and next to Reinventing Yourself,
this one is my favorite. I pre-ordered this book and when it arrived the timing was perfect. I found myself reading several small chapters at a time as the information is useful and each chapter leaves you a changed reader. It is like getting a new pair of glasses and seeing the world from whole new perspective. One chapter about the distinction between expectation and agreement comes to mind. Once you become aware, you will forever change how you lead others.

Get the book. You certainly won't be sorry. The book is filled with ideas that will
change your perspective. You will be more aware, your mind will have shifted.

absolutely helpful and shifting your mind
By Anja
I have been lucky enough to receive an early copy through Steve's club fearless and discovered a really great book. The chapters usually are quite short so you always can find the spare minutes to read yet another one. For me it worked very good to read some short chapter and then have a day or two to ponder about Steve's insights. His advice is down to earth and very practical though you sometimes find yourself resisting his words as in "oh, it can't be that easy". For the majority of those it took a while until I could process them and now am still working on living along them but nonetheless this book shifted my mind and helped me to explore different point of views on a wide range of situations and thoughts. I am glad this book found it's way to my attention. I learned a lot of things already and will definetely read it again to gain even more from it.

simple, lovely
By Sarah Harden
As other reviewers have suggested, the book is a simple, introductory glance at graphic design. It is, presumably, written for those who have never considered the impact of font selection and page layout on the reader, viewer, etc. Still, it makes a nice companion text for more serious graphic designers, as well as a welcome first-read for individuals who encounter or produce graphic materials on a daily basis, but who have little formal training in the discipline.

OK, not useful
By Beanhauer
This book was more flash than content. It looks very nice, always having a gripping picture on the left, a nice layout on the right, and font examples that illustrate the point. As a beginning designer, I didn't learn anything new or concrete, but enjoyed having the book wash over me for awhile.

The oddest thing about the book is the typography. The main text is in a very readable font, but little real information is in the main text. Most of the meat is in the side bars, which are presented in a tiny red san-serif font. So a book on type usage and readability is asking you to read 2-3 paragraphs of informatio in an essentially unreadable font.

5 Quick Truths
By theRobot
1. Entertainment, not resource. Provides insight into the uses of type, as well as a brief history of many different typefaces. Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typography" (0881792063) is a better book for those in need of a resource.

2. Aimed at a less experienced audience. Discusses type in relation to emotions, legibility, etc, though not in great depth. It does a great job of showing a beginner how important type is, showing a large number of examples of typefaces, and, possibly, inspiring them to look into the subject more thoroughly.

3. The quote used in the title did not come from the authors, it came from F. Goudy in 1936. Also, most of the fonts mentioned in the book cannot be found in Adobe's font library, some are over 100 years old. The book is not trying to sell you anything.

4. The book itself is a great example of what can be accomplished with type. It also contains many instances of type being used to great effect, while explaining how and why it works so well.

5. As someone interested in type, you could do much worse than this book. However, its simple nature, though complete and well-constructed, whets the appetite more than actually satisfying it.

Robert's book is the Bible of sudden wealth. So read it now!"
~ Mary Buffett, New York Times bestselling author of Buffettology

Everything changes. Those are the words I've heard time and time again over the past two decades from my clients who became sudden wealth recipients. Sudden wealth is a roller coaster ride of emotions - from the highest highs to the lowest lows. Sudden wealth is often portrayed as creating dire consequences for its recipients, but it can be an amazing opportunity that improves your life and those around you. I've worked with enough sudden wealth clients over the years to see patterns - what works and what doesn't. With proper guidance, and a willingness to stick to the 12 Principles outlined in this book, you can avoid the common pitfalls that so often destroy money, and instead transform your sudden wealth into lasting wealth to create a better life for yourself and others.

Here are just a few things you'll learn in The Sudden Wealth Solution:

* What does sudden wealth and surviving a disaster have in common? This one idea can help protect your money for generations.
* Learn about the three sudden wealth stages and what they mean.
* Never be caught off guard again. Learn just one sentence for when someone asks you for a loan or to invest in a project.
* Should you avoid making decisions after getting your sudden wealth? No. Doing so could cost you millions and be disastrous. Discover the decisions you are safe to make and those you must not make right after getting your windfall.
* Learn what time of day you should schedule phone calls and meetings with your advisors.
* Learn an effective and step-by-step method to choose the right attorney, CPA, and financial advisor for you.
* Read about the 8 key rules you can use to evaluate every financial advisor you interview.
* What's a Driver vs. a Passenger? You'll understand how this can help you make the important decisions.
* Overwhelmed and not sure what to do? Learn how to relax and start making progress.
* You might be surprised about the places you shouldn't look for an advisor.
* Certain money beliefs can make it nearly impossible to create lasting wealth. Learn which money beliefs you have and how to reset them.
* What to communicate immediately to friends and family after receiving sudden wealth.
* Copy a short note from the book that you can email to friends and family that puts you in control.
* Does it ever make sense to stretch the truth? You'll read why it just might.
* Figure out who's in your lifeboat and why this is one of the most important things you can find out to create financial security.
* Why people who get sudden wealth often act like monkeys and what you can do about it.
* Discover what really makes you happy and how you can use money to enhance your life.
* Learn what money has to do with cacti and ferns and why you want cacti.
* Read why the acronym SAFE can help protect your wealth.
* Can living with someone jeopardize your assets? Yes and you'll read the easy solution to this.
* Learn simple rules so you can invest like the Harvard endowment.
* Which investments are off limits and why.
* Learn how to create lifetime income from your sudden wealth.
* Worried you will spend too much? Learn how to break the spendaholic addition.

Money well-spent
By Kindle Customer
There aren't many books that I read through and then turn right around and re-read, but this is one of them. Such a "wealth" of information on the subject of what to do when faced with a sudden wealth event. My second time through, I will be taking notes and making lists. I found the book to be very wise and comprehensive. The companion web-site has not launched yet at the time I am writing this, but promises to be full of resources such as recommendations for advisors and tools to gain a better understanding of oneself and money habits through self tests. I believe in being true to myself, but to do that, I must first know myself. I found this book really opened my eyes to some truths about myself and has made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses. in summary, buying this book was money well-spent!

This Book is a Gold Mine.
By Movie Man 101
I read over 100 business/finance/self-help books per year and I must say, this book is one of the best books that I have read in a long, long time.

Not only does it offer tons of practical advice for sudden wealth recipients, it also dives deeply into the often overlooked psychological forces which influence the recipients of sudden wealth and their families/friends. The author has a way of distilling complex ideas into actionable and easy-to-implement steps, which makes this book far more powerful than most other books on wealth.

I that would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants practical advice on all aspects of how to protect, grow and manage wealth.

A refreshing read with crucial advice not often covered in personal finance books!
By S.A.
A refreshing read with crucial advice not often covered in personal finance books! When you experience a “sudden wealth” event and your finances change overnight, what do you do? Even a small inheritance can radically improve your financial life – how do you avoid blowing your new fortune? Why do so many lottery winners go broke, and how can you steer clear of this? These are some of the many questions answered in this book.

I read a lot of books on personal finance (to keep my own finances in check), and not often do I find myself so engaged during my read. Not only does this book offer a step-by-step roadmap to preserving new wealth (in 12 clever principles), it’s also filled with personal anecdotes by the author, the psychological factors that influence our financial behaviors (why do we save and spend like we do?) and valuable resources that everyday people can turn to.

Overnight your finances can change, and this book breaks down the many different scenarios and steps you can take to ensure that you protect your finances for your future and your loved ones. Even a small windfall can make a big difference if you manage your money right, and this book is a great starting point for financial help and guidance.

Learning how to manage “sudden wealth” (or any amount of money), shouldn’t feel like a chore, and this book is an enjoyable read to get started!

Instant New York Times Bestseller

“Insidery, detailed, and absorbing. Come for the chapter titled ‘Why Can’t He Be Happy’ and stay for the one called ‘Miami Vice.’” —Sports Illustrated

A defining biography of Nick Saban, the influential and polarizing University of Alabama football coach who not only transformed the college game but might also be the best ever at winning.

As the head coach of the University of Alabama’s football team, Nick Saban is perhaps the most enigmatic man in the sport. Unpredictable in his professional loyalties, uncompromising in his vision, and unyielding in his pursuit of perfection, the highest-paid coach in college football has changed the face of the game. His program-building skills have delivered packed stadiums, rabid fans, hundreds of millions of dollars, legions of detractors, countless NFL draft picks, and a total of four national championships, including three in the last six years. Monte Burke’s Saban—the first major biography of the man who has come to epitomize the game—presents this towering figure with a never-before-seen human depth.

Though a great deal is known about Saban the coach, not much is known about Saban the man. Little has been written about his early climb through the coaching ranks as an assistant in college and in the NFL, or his head-coaching stints at Michigan State and Louisiana State and his struggles as a pro coach with the Miami Dolphins.

Through unprecedented interviews with more than 250 friends, coworkers, rivals, former players, and others, Burke reveals the defining moments of the coach’s life. Saban paints a portrait of a complex and compelling man, fundamentally shaped by both his past and the game he loves, in a way that no previous book has.

Review
“Insidery, detailed, and absorbing. Come for the chapter titled ‘Why Can’t He Be Happy’ and stay for the one called ‘Miami Vice.’”
—Sports Illustrated

“Saban isn’t an authorized biography, but Burke’s array of sources—friends, colleagues, rivals, former players—makes it feel definitive.” —New York Times Book Review

“In this well-reported, engrossing tale, Monte Burke has captured the imperfect brilliance of Nick Saban. Read it, and you will emerge with a deeper understanding of the man, his zeal, his achievement, and the costs that have come with it all.”
—Gay Talese

“An eye-opening book. Monte Burke has finally taken us behind the great big curtain and, for the first time, shown us who Nick Saban really is and what makes him tick. I couldn’t put this book down. For all college football fans, this is a must-read.”
—Paul Finebaum, ESPN college football analyst

“Monte Burke has written the most comprehensive portrait yet of football’s most enigmatic coach. Saban is as close as the average fan will ever get to watching film or riding in a golf cart with the man himself.”
—Warren St. John, author of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer

“If you are a fan of college football—or sports in general—you must read this book. Monte Burke does a deep dive into the life and career of Nick Saban and surfaces with an honest and compelling portrait of one of the most complex, driven and successful coaches on the planet.”
—Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump and The Crimson Tide: The Official Illustrated History of Alabama Football

“Smart and passionate, Saban combines the ardor of a fan with the eye of a journalist. Monte Burke has his finger on the pulse of the number one coach and the number one program in college football.”
—Allen Barra, author of The Last Coach: A Life of Paul “Bear” Bryant

“A comprehensive biography . . . Through interviews with more than 250 people in Saban’s inner circle, including players, athletic directors, even golf buddies, Burke reveals the underpinnings of Saban’s success—from his perfectionist father to his obsession with strategy to his West Virginia coal-mining hometown.”
—Garden & Gun

“A no-holds-barred glimpse into the quest for perfection that has driven Saban to win four national titles in his nineteen years as a college head coach. . . . Burke has written a winning, definitive portrait of a fascinating character.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Burke takes readers into locker rooms, onto the field, and into recruits’ living rooms, as friends, foes, and colleagues shed light on the life of one of today’s most successful college football coaches. . . . Burke wisely focuses on the man rather than the play-by-play, and the result is a genuinely insightful look at a fierce competitor who nevertheless seems to care for his players both on and off the field.”
—Booklist

Saban INTRODUCTION
On the first morning of 2007, as sleet fell from a dull sky, Mal Moore, the athletic director at the University of Alabama, hustled onto the tarmac at Tuscaloosa Regional Airport. With one last glance over his shoulder, he ducked his head and boarded an airplane bound for South Florida. The plane was not owned by the university—it had been loaned to him by an Alabama booster and Huntsville defense contractor named Farid Rafiee. Moore was going to great lengths to keep this trip a secret. A little more than a month earlier he had fired Mike Shula, the son of a coaching legend, and the University of Alabama’s fourth football coach in seven very mediocre years. Thanks to flight trackers on the Internet, Moore’s every move had been followed ever since as he searched—in vain, to that point—for a new head coach.

This trip had to remain clandestine. Moore was after the biggest prize in the game. A man named Nick Saban. News of a meeting with him would cause, as Moore put it, “quite a ruckus.” The main reason for that: Saban, who was then the head coach of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins, had publicly denied any interest in the Alabama job, over and over and over.

Moore was flying somewhat blind. He did not have an appointment set up with Saban. The Dolphins coach had refused to take his calls.

Mal Moore had a down-home manner about him. He mumbled a bit when he talked, and had the lumbering body of an ex-football player. He’d been the backup quarterback on Alabama’s national championship team in 1961 under Paul “Bear” Bryant, one of the most successful coaches in the history of football and a man who had attained divine status within the state long before his death in 1983. Moore had parlayed that brush with Bryant’s robe into his current job, one that he now was in jeopardy of losing.

Moore became Alabama’s athletic director in 1999. The first football coach during his tenure was Mike DuBose, who was also a former Alabama player. During his time at Alabama, Dubose posted a 24-23 record, was accused of sexually harassing a secretary, and his program underwent a recruiting scandal that led to crippling NCAA sanctions. DuBose’s successor, hired by Moore, was a promising coach named Dennis Franchione. He led the Crimson Tide to two consecutive winning seasons but bolted with a ten-year, $15 million contract on the table because he felt hamstrung by the NCAA sanctions. Moore replaced him with a man named Mike Price, who was fired before even coaching a single game because of a rowdy trip to a strip club, after which he may or may not have spent the night with a stripper named Destiny. Then came Shula, who had the right pedigree—he’d been an Alabama quarterback and had that football-famous last name. But Shula never came close to living up to his father, Don’s, legacy, and he appeared overwhelmed as the head coach, running the football program in a sloppy manner.

In those seven years, the Alabama football team—winner of twelve national titles at the time and, formerly, a perennial contender for said titles, and the source of much pride and meaning in the football-mad state—had spiraled downward into, at best, irrelevancy on the national stage. At worst, it had become college football’s horror show.

For years, Moore had relied on Alabama’s name and past glory to acquire head coaches. After firing Shula, though, he found himself in a bind. The shine had worn off. Suddenly, the Alabama job was one that no coach of any real stature seemed to want to touch. Moore had been turned down by Steve Spurrier, the cheeky head coach at South Carolina, a football program that didn’t come close to Alabama in terms of pedigree. Moore had offered the job to Rich Rodriguez, a young, up-and-coming coach at West Virginia, and believed that he had accepted it. As Moore was working out the final details of the contract, he was blindsided by Rodriguez, who suddenly changed his mind and announced that he was staying at West Virginia. In the end, Moore appeared to have been merely played by the West Virginia coach for a raise and an extension.

The bungled coach search had earned Moore a new nickname within Alabama football circles. They called him “Malfunction Moore.”

Now Moore was attempting to woo the fifty-five-year-old Saban, who had been a master as a college head coach, reviving three different programs and winning the 2003 national title at his last stop on that level, with Louisiana State University. Saban had left the college game after the 2004 season to take his first head-coaching job in the NFL. In two seasons with the Dolphins, he’d posted a less-than-mediocre 15-17 record. But his reputation as a college coach still burned brightly, and his name came up anytime a major college program needed a new head coach.

Saban, though, appeared to be staying put. The Miami media horde had persistently asked him about the coaching vacancy at Alabama. Saban had begun to get testy. At a press conference just ten days before Moore arrived in Miami, he’d declared, rather definitively: “I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.”

At this point, Moore had no other viable options left. His trip to South Florida was all-or-nothing. He knew that his job was on the line. “I told the pilots when they dropped me off in Miami that if I didn’t come back to this plane with Nick Saban, they should go on and take me to Cuba,” he said.

Moore, however, had reason to feel a sliver of optimism. By coincidence his nephew, Chuck Moore, a home builder, had remodeled Saban’s lake house in Georgia during Saban’s years at LSU. Saban, of course, knew who Chuck’s uncle was. During the last few weeks of the 2006 Dolphins season, despite his public denials, Saban had called Chuck a few times to tell him that he was possibly interested in the Alabama job, knowing full well whom Chuck would call the minute they hung up the phone.

Moore had also been in contact with Saban’s agent, Jimmy Sexton. Six days after Shula was dismissed, Moore and Sexton had secretly met in New York during the National Football Foundation awards dinner. Sexton had told Moore then that if Saban were to leave the NFL, Alabama would be at the top of his list.

Though Saban continued to rebuff Moore, the Alabama athletic director knew that at the very least, the coach’s interest was piqued. What Moore didn’t know at the time was that a far more important ally was waiting for him in Miami.

On the evening of January 1, 2007—after trying, in vain, to reach Saban all day while hunkered down in a hotel room—Moore finally made contact. During a brief phone conversation, Saban made it very clear that he wanted to talk to Wayne Huizenga, the Dolphins’ billionaire owner, before he did anything else. He ended the call with a promise to contact Moore the following day around lunchtime.

The next day, Moore waited. The call never came. Moore contacted two of the most important Alabama trustees: Angus Cooper II, a shipping magnate from Mobile, and Paul Bryant Jr., the son of Alabama’s most famous coach. (The trustee duo had passed some of their own nervous hours by going quail hunting.) Moore told them that Saban hadn’t yet called him back and still refused to meet with him. “We thought we’d lost Nick then,” says Cooper. “We knew Huizenga was trying to keep him, and we thought that meant he’d pay him a lot more money.”

After waiting by the phone a bit longer, Moore finally gave up. He checked out of his hotel and had his driver—Francisco Rengifo, whom he called “Frankie”—take him to the airport. As they drove, Moore—on a whim—decided to make a last-ditch detour. He asked Frankie to drive him to Saban’s neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale. They parked a few blocks away, which gave him a view of the comings and goings of the Saban house. Moore sat there, staring out of the car window like a papal supplicant waiting for the white smoke. He later described his first day and a half in Miami as “excruciating.”

It wasn’t exactly pleasant for Saban, either. He paced the floors of his spacious house. He called former colleagues and old friends for advice. He talked to Sexton. He endlessly ran through everything with his greatest confidante: his wife, Terry, whom he’d married during his junior year in college. Saban knew how it would look if he left the Dolphins, after just two seasons and in the wake of his litany of flat-out denials of any interest in the Alabama job. He would be called a liar, a failure, and a quitter.

Most of the dread he felt, though, came from the fact that he already knew what he wanted to do. The NFL was not for him.

Saban had been an assistant coach in the NFL in the 1980s and ’90s, but the game had changed significantly since then. Free agency had blossomed, turning some of the best players into prima donnas who often placed the desires of their agents and themselves over those of their coaches and their teams. The NFL had become more of a socialist enterprise than the meritocracy that Saban preferred. “In the NFL you were penalized for success,” Saban says. A good season meant a more difficult schedule in the following one. It also meant a lower position in the subsequent NFL Draft. This left Saban feeling constricted. “In the NFL you only get one first-round draft pick, and that’s if it hadn’t already been traded away,” he says. “You couldn’t really outwork anybody. In college, I could recruit ten players with first-round talent every year.” In the college game, he had more control.

He knew that Alabama wasn’t a turnkey program. Hell, it was practically in ruins. It would take some time to streamline everything, to get everyone on the same page, and to restore the Alabama football name to recruits and to the nation. The potential was there, however, and Saban knew that the university was desperate enough to return to football glory that they were willing to give him everything he needed. Moore wouldn’t have been in South Florida now if that weren’t the case.

Still, Saban felt a strong sense of loyalty to Huizenga, a man he very much admired. He’d made a pledge to the Dolphins owner, on many different occasions, to turn around the franchise. Huizenga also had demonstrated complete faith in Saban: He’d never said no to one of his coach’s requests—for more control, for more money to spend on assistant coaches, for newer, better facilities. If it were totally up to Saban, he would stay with the Dolphins and give Huizenga what he believed he owed him.

But the decision wasn’t his alone.

After sitting in the car for some time, Moore finally talked to Sexton, who called Terry and asked her to invite Moore in. She did. Saban wasn’t home—he was at the Dolphins’ complex, where he had a meeting with Huizenga. Terry and Moore hit it off right away, sensing a mutual interest. She served him lunch while the two talked about her husband. She made it clear to Moore that Saban was miserable in the NFL and dearly missed coaching in college. She also made it clear that she wanted out. In the NFL, the coach’s wife had no real role in the community. On a college campus—particularly at a place like Alabama—the coach’s wife was a figure of prominence, a queen bee. Terry also believed that a college town was a much healthier place to raise their two children. After lunch, she invited Moore to come back for dinner that night.

Sometime after Moore left, Saban called home and told Terry that he had made up his mind: He was staying with the Dolphins and he didn’t want to meet with Moore. Terry then informed him that Moore was actually coming over for dinner that night.

Over dinner, Moore pitched Saban on the merits of the job. Saban would get an unprecedented amount of power and control of the football program. He would also be paid a blockbuster eight-year, $32 million salary, the highest ever in college football. Saban remained palpably reticent throughout the evening. As Moore was leaving, Terry pulled him aside and told him that they had to find a way to get her husband on the plane to Tuscaloosa the next day. As heartened as he was by Terry’s words, Moore still had no idea what Saban was going to ultimately decide.

Saban spent another night agonizing over the decision. Terry knew it would be better for him—for them—back in college, and she spent the evening trying to convince him that it was okay to leave the Dolphins, to think of his own—and his family’s—well-being and happiness. The next morning, Saban had one more conversation with Huizenga. The Dolphins’ owner realized by then that he had lost his coach. He eased Saban’s agony a bit by telling him to do what was in his heart.

Finally, Saban called Moore and accepted the Alabama job.

Moore and Frankie rushed over to the Saban house. By this time, the media had caught the scent that something was in the offing. Press helicopters hovered over the Sabans’ house as Frankie backed his white Mercedes sedan into the garage. Saban, Terry, their daughter, Kristen, and a school friend of hers entered the garage through the house, carrying a few hastily packed suitcases. The three women sat in the backseat, their luggage in their laps. Saban sat shotgun. Moore squeezed himself in between Saban and Frankie, sitting on the console. Helicopters chased them all the way to the airport.

On the plane, Moore and Saban sat across from each other, with Moore facing the cockpit and Saban facing the rear of the plane. As the plane took off, with its nose pointed toward the sky, Moore found himself looking up at his new coach. He would never forget this moment, and would tell the story frequently to his closest friends, in various versions.

“Mal, let me ask you something,” Saban said over the roar of the plane’s engines, gazing down at Moore. Saban’s leg had started to bounce. At this point, adrenaline was staving off exhaustion. Any pretense he might have felt had been completely stripped away. “Do you think you’ve hired the best coach in the country?”

Moore was a bit taken aback by the question, not exactly sure where it was heading. He still didn’t know Saban well, still found him hard to read. Moore rubbed his big hands together and cleared his throat. “Why, Nick, of course I do,” he said, while thinking to himself: For four million dollars a year, I sure as hell hope so.

“Well, you didn’t. I’m nothing without my players,” Saban said, locking eyes with Moore. “But you did just hire a helluva recruiter.”

With that, Moore exhaled audibly.

Highly-recommend this fine book!
By gordon19
THIS is a definitive biography on Nick Saban which covers his life from an early age through the 2014 season. Very insightful and well written with no discernible bias by the author. Saban is a complicated man with an over-riding theme of still trying to prove to his late football coach father, Big Nick, that he can finish 'the process". His leaving so many jobs is an important thing to know the 'whys' of BUT he has done a tremendous job at each university stop in vastly improving the football program into one that the athletes are encouraged to graduate, treated with respect. Did that at Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama - the last with big-time results in making huge improvements overall in the program. One has to respect that. I've read the bios of some coaches who have interested me - Bear Bryant, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier and have learned a lot. Nick is Spurrier without the sense of humor! I am not an Alabama fan - just a fan of outstanding college coaches.

47 year old fan of the Crimson Tide. But a great book about a tremendous leader, regardless who you pull for. Highly recommend.

We all want to know what makes winners tick. ...

We all want to know what makes winners tick. Who are these individuals deep down inside. Will we ever understand them? Can we pinpoint the reasons for their success. Burke looks to answer these questions - and some things you will not believe. Solid read.
