About the Author
Joshua S. Goldstein, is an associate of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University and a leading expert on war. His books include "International Relations and War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa". He lives in Amherst, MA.
Jon C. Pevehouse is Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin. He has published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, International Organization, the Journal of Politics and the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.
Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.
