Wonderful follow up to "The Marriage Bureau for Rich People"

"The Many Conditions of Love" is a solid next step in the "Marriage Bureau for Rich People Series". The reader learns more about the Ali's son Rehman who is an engineer and activist. He cares more about the common man than he does a regular paycheck and this irritates Mr Ali and causes some friction within the family. Rehman also falls in love with Usha, a television reporter from another caste and religion. Usha's family is opposed to any sort of union between the two. Mr Zama provides an interesting window into the role that religion, caste and tradition play on the stage of romance in India. Aruna and her new marriage to Ramanujam is also explored. The challenges that she faces in the home of her inlaws are very interesting. Pari, a second cousin of the Ali family, is a Shakespeare loving widow and a wonderful addition, as is Vasu, a young orphan from the country. Vasu is rejected by his family because he is considered to be less than auspicious to have around. Their story is very compelling . I love that the Ali family disregard any superstitions and welcome Pari and Vasu with open arms. What a story, what a family!

Great sequel to "The Marriage Bureau for Rich People"

Wonderful glimpse into life, death and marriage in India. The characters are charming, plot is delightful - I read it in December, but it would be a great beach read!

Not extraordinary

I was looking forward to reading The Many Conditions of Love, having enjoyed thr earlier book, The Marriage Bureau for Rich People. As is often the case, the second book by a writer whose work you had enjoyed, was disappointing.
Farahad Zama’s style is simple but very clear. She has a knack for describing everything in in very precise detail, so it is easy to visualise what she is describing.
This book was disappointing as some of the stories seem to come together, maybe in an artificial way. For instance, the problem of what happens to the boy Vasu was easily solved – it is almost felt as if the characters had been brought in for this reason, which is unlikely to happen in real life. In the same way, the intervention by the grandmother to end Usha’s forced marriage seemed incredible, just as Usha’s decision about her engagement. It seems that Farahad Zama’s grip on reality, very apparent in The Marriage Bureau for Rich People, was somewhat skewed in this book.
Although The Many Conditions of Love can be read as a complete book, readers may find it worthwhile reading The Marriage Bureau for Rich People first, as it gives the background to the characters in the second book.
