It is an excellent introductory book in stochastic processes. But as the author have written in Afterword section of his book : "The two glaring omissions are the theories of Brownian motion and Martingales".

Anyway, I strongly recommend this book for begining of stochastic processes.

Fantastic for whom have knowledge of statistical and probability theories

It's a great book. Very well writen, full of proofs (some of them not so detailed, but perfectly understandable) and covers almost everything you need to know to start working with stochastic processes. However, a good knowledge about statistical and probability theories is more then desirable.

Excellent value, though just a bit formal

You can see by examining the table of contents that this book contains a very complete non-measure theoretic treatment of stochastic processes. The main text reads a bit "theorem-proofy" for my taste, and could arguably use some more diagrams (though no one else in the reviews has expressed such a view, so maybe that's just my problem). But this is partly offset by the large number of detailed examples.

Another plus: this is one of the few texts I've seen that treats the Bernoulli process explicitly - a whole chapter - rather than just starting with the Poisson process. I think this helps create a fuller picture of these processes, as the Bernoulli is essentially the discrete time analog (no "anti" pun intended!) of the Poisson.

The text goes on to present a very detailed treatment of Markov process in both discrete and continuous time, including a chapter on optimal stopping, which is not often treated at this level. You will find detailed treatments of branching and queuing models, renewal theory, and really just about everything that can be treated without measure theory. This is probably the best reference available on the subject at this level, especially in terms of content-to-price ratio.

Although I would supplement this book with a more elementary treatment (such as the excellent albeit pricey Bertsekas text, which contains some very easy to read chapters on stochastic processes), it is a valuable addition to the Dover catalog and should not be missed.

I have been working on my yoga practice for over 30 years. I have read many books on the subject over the years. I found this CD set to be a great addition to my library. Mr. Freeman does a wonderful job of distilling the many threads of yogic philosophy into a very digestible form.
I have loaded it onto my iPod, and listen to it as I am out and about.
If you are interested in what goes on behind Yoga. This is for you. I could not recommend it more.

Oozes Gonzo Goodness

I was lucky enough to participate in the beta-testing of this scenario written by Venger and I think it is fantastic for a Call of Cthulhu RPG or any other OSR RPG system. Lots of gonzo goodness that pulls inspiration from Conrad's Heart of Darkness and 80's horror like Cannibal Holocaust. Artwork is amazing, as well.

I had to buy it but...

I had to buy this book for my community nursing class. Please know, this book has LOTS of fluff. I guess since I am used to med surg and acute books with factual, succinct information and this book goes too far into examples and extra.

Pro: its a paper back (lighter weight)
Con: its a paper back (easier to rip, "auto" closes because the book is light weight).

If you HAVE to buy this book, look for a used version. It's not bookshelf worthy after purchasing so minimize it's use and resell it.

I would like a refund on this ebook. There are no page numbers in order to complete reading assignments. It is completely worthless as a textbook. Now I'll have to buy it again in paper format. Save your money on renting or purchasing the ebook students.

Horrible book and poorly written. Grammatical errors throughout the book and it is not an easy read. it gives a lot of useless information that makes me think " what did I just read?" I hope to never purchase another book from these authors again.

Wyatt!

Wyatt Enslow, not-quite-neurotypical math genius extraordinaire, was easily my favorite character in Insignia, so I had to read this.

Allies follows Wyatt as she becomes a trainee at the Spire, from before the events of Insignia up through a couple of early scenes from the book. Wyatt knows it'll be a big change in her life, but it's a bigger one than she's expecting: she's the Spire's first autistic student, and nobody's sure what the effects will be when they install the neural processor that all the Spire's trainees have implanted in their brains. It's likely that the processor will try to "fix" her brain's atypical way of perceiving the world.

Even though it may fundamentally change who she is, Wyatt goes through with the implant, hoping that it will give her the ability to understand people like she understands mathematics. It turns out, though, that being "normal" isn't so easy.

Autism isn't something that shows up a lot in YA speculative fiction, and I really appreciate Wyatt's inclusion and sympathetic portrayal. I did feel a little like from her point of view, being non-neurotypical was a bad thing, which it absolutely isn't. But based on her experiences, it wasn't a surprising view. And it wasn't a view shared by all the characters; Lt. Blackburn, the Spire's programming teacher, repeatedly tries to tell her that it's fine to be who she is.

Most of the events of Allies were at least alluded to in Insignia; there aren't any big surprises here. It's not as humorous a read as some of Insignia's scenes. But it's a nice little bit of backstory for Wyatt, so if you like her, it's worth picking up.

An interesting bridge between books, this novella tells the story of Wyatt Enslow, the genius who could, at times, seem more machine than human. We get a sweet little look into her mind, her struggles, her desire to be normal like everyone else.

She's way too smart for her own good, but when she goes to the Pentagonal Spire she's given a chance to actually fit in. And despite a few setbacks, she finally feels herself growing into her own identity after meeting Tom, Vik, and especially Yuri.

This was a terrific look into an exceptional character from the Insignia series. I'd recommend this to anyone who has read at least the first book!

Now, I'd be extraordinarily happy if we got another novella about Medusa...

About the Author
O. C. Ferrell (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is University Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at Belmont University. He most recently served nine years as University Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at the University of New Mexico. His academic research focuses on ethical decision-making, stakeholder relationships and social responsibility. He is a leading author in marketing ethics and stakeholder orientation to achieve marketing performance in organizations. Dr. Ferrell is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee twice. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is Vice President of Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science. He has received the Cutco Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 20 books and more than 100 articles. His articles have been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and The Academy of Management Executive, as well as other journals. His MARKETING: CONCEPTS AND STRATEGY TEXT, co-authored with Dr. William Pride, is one of the most widely adopted principles of marketing text in the world. On a global level, he has helped affect business ethics dialogue by being the only ethics professor invited by a former U.S. Secretary of State to participate in an executive seminar on globalization and its implications and challenges for societies, corporate responsibility, and public policy and included ambassadors and economic ministers from Argentina, Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Germany, the Republic of Georgia, Lesotho, Mexico, Peru, and Poland, as well as Fortune 100 firms such as Raytheon, Lockheed-Martin, and Sumitomo Corporation. He was invited by FEDERASUL, a prestigious business organization in Brazil, to discuss business ethics on a panel that included one of Brazil's Supreme Court Justices as well as a former ambassador. In 2006?2007, Professor Fraedrich was awarded the Bill Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming, College of Business. Recently, Professor Fraedrich was invited to teach for the Department of the Army at the General Officer level concerning "The Consequences of Power." His class included 13 Brigadier Generals as well as five star generals (two lieutenant generals and three major generals). He is also the author of integrated application-oriented ethics software for academics and Fortune 500 corporations.

Dr. Linda Ferrell (Ph.D. University of Memphis) is professor of marketing at Belmont University. Dr. Ferrell coauthored Business and Society with O. C. Ferrell and Debbie M. Thorne and is co-author of Business in a Changing World with O.C. Ferrell and Geoff Hirt. She won the Best Paper award twice at the American Marketing Association's National Summer Educators Meeting and has published over 30 articles in JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF PUBLIC POLICY & MARKETING, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, AMS REVIEW, JOURNAL OF STRATEGIC MARKETING, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, and CASE RESEARCH JOURNAL, as well as others.

AVOID, NO VALUE

As one very well-versed in ethics texts and business ethics in particular, I would rate this one of the least valuable books available. Cursory information, like a reader's digest version written at an 8th grade level. Fills pages with extraneous info from textbooks in other disciplines, nothing of value here that can't be had in greater depth, with a clearer focus elsewhere. Too much hype, too little content, written for instructors who know nothing about ethics but are assigned to teach it.
