Great book for beginners

Programming is definitely not my forte. I have always had difficulties in understanding computer language and this book was easy to read and understand. The book is not expensive and it teaches you what you need to know. The C programming is one of the most important of programming languages. The author gives you an introduction into the C computer language and them moves on to give you the fundamentals to the language. This was very helpful to me in learning the basics. Recommend this book for those new to programming as well as those looking to brush up on their skills.

Is Human Intelligence Inherited?

Professor Kamin presented convincing evidence to debunk the commonly held view that human intelligence (I.Q.) is to a large extent inherited. He did this by pointing out, in some cases, fallacious assumptions made by proponents of the hereditary theory and in other cases faulty research design and/or conduct of studies that purport to demonstrate that human I.Q. is mainly determined by inheritance.

Polemical, politicized and misleading

Kamin's books is widely cited (eg by Stephen Jay Gould) as a source for those wishing to 'debunk' the concept of IQ.

I had a good look at it but I did not find it useful because of the way it misleads the reader about the sources. For example, Henry Goddard's paper "MENTAL TESTS AND THE IMMIGRANT" in "The Journal of Delinquency" is supposed to have claimed that Jewish immigrants were mentally defective, based on IQ tests. What does the actual paper say?

"Our study therefore makes no attempt to determine the percentage of feeble-minded among immigrants in general or even of the special groups named - the Jews, Hungarians, Italians and Russians."

The whole book is as unreliable as this.

As a side note, thanks to people like Kamin and Gould , a lot of people are of the few that IQ is a discredited notion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here is the official position of the American Psychological Association, the premier professional association in the field

"The findings of the task force state that IQ scores do have high predictive validity for individual (but not necessarily population) differences in school achievement. They confirm the predictive validity of IQ for adult occupational status, even when variables such as education and family background have been statistically controlled. They agree that individual (again, not necessarily population) differences in intelligence are substantially influenced by genetics."

I chose this rating because John Maxwell is an excellent author and is willing to share the gifts God has given him with others. These leadership thoughts are great for anyone (old/young, student/teacher, parent/child). This information really makes you evaluate who you are as a leader and how strong your character truly is. I advise anyone who wants to grow in their influence, knowledge, and character as a leader to read this book. Notice that his ideas are not leadership principles as in his other books, but are leadership thoughts. In other words, you can use them as guidelines, but they are also there for future reference if you ever have the same doubts or concerns that you had about yourself before reading the book, it's a great read; I finished it in two weeks; you can read a chapter a day as a devotional, pray over it, and apply it! Have fun, and God Bless :-)

Amazing

Another terrific book by John Maxwell. I read on reviewer who said he recycles the same ideas, while I can not totally disagree I find the context that he puts the ideas in is always different and helps me to apply the ideas in a different way. I often give his books as gifts to others and those receiving soon follow suit. Think on These Things has a way of penetrating the inner workings of day to day leadership and living, when you don't even know you need it ;-)

Makes good arguments for a more worker friendly concept

Go into this knowing that the authors are evangelists for this work style structure. They are true believers who work in an industry built on creativity, innovation and disruption. So, naturally, they embrace a personnel model that is creative, innovative and disruptive. You will also be reminded throughout the book that they are swimming in money and can throw that money at any roadblock. Small business owners might not tread as blissfully into a remote worker model. All of that said, the book does a nice job of arguing against all the common excuses that keep businesses from embracing this highly flexible, worker-friendly model. For those needing a culture change, it could be an excellent group reading that leads to massive change. A good book to get you thinking about the possibilities. But if you take the leap, you'll need more specifics and strategies, not to mention some trial and error, patience and a whole lot of change resilience.

Managing money? This one will help you by ...

... making you aware of your own/your clients' biases and giving you practical tools to defuse them. Specifically, by way of example, money managers (I am one) will learn to:
- recognize their own typical behavior, or that of colleagues or clients, as belonging to one of several psychological types ... - thereby stopping short of saying/doing stupid things and also circumventing problems at the workplace; - identify actions that will boost behavior that you or your firm seem to lack: creativity, focus, a will to use analytical skills, etc; - identify industry mantras ("team approach", etc) for what they are or identify actions that transform a mantra into action
Overall, I agree with the other reviewers that this book is a surprise, a very positive one. Basically it convinced me that every money manager should have, packed with his/her baggage of technical skills and intelligence (standard and "emotional"), also some psychological training. This book goes some way towards such education.
I am uncomfortable with a couple of Ware's ideas, particularly the "listen to intuition" advice towards the end of the book. As an "owl" I would be inclined to say this, but basically I met too many fakers who would justify rash investment moves only on intuition and long-running experience, lose money or fail to recognize the moment to take profit, and never talk about it afterwards. Intuition may come before analysis, but if it cannot be supported by reasoning I don't see that it should be followed; as a matter of practice you won't be able to anyway, because first you have to sell it to clients, team members, or bosses, and you won't.
But stars measure how good is the book, not how much I agree with it, and this one is great. I'm serious, buy it. Even more so if you don't believe in the psych stuff: do violence unto yourself, buy it now and read it, you'll need it more than others do.

It's not just for investment managers

I know Jim Ware, and he knows I love to read. So when his book was published he offered to send a copy. Sitting next to me was a large pile of "to-be-read" books, so I was certain a book for investment managers would reside near the bottom for a long while. That was then...
Shortly after it arrived, knowing that reading diverse topics offers insights not available if I stick to the familiar and friendly, I began to read. What a shock (no offense Jim). This is a wonderful book! Even before I was finished, I found myself referring to it in a conversation about different methodologies for strategic planning...totally unrelated to investments. By using Myers-Briggs Typology, Jim gave me a renewed sense for how I can be more successful when I approach others based on what makes them comfortable, rather than from my own comfort zone.
Jim obviously shares my interest in synthesizing diverse subject areas. He, quite naturally I thought, shows how wisdom from quantum physics, large scale change, eastern thought, creativity and-god help those analytical investment types-spirituality can lead to new ways of thinking within any profession. Jim offers a wonderful synthesis for anyone who wants to see the world from several leading-edge vantage points.
And, I loved Jim sense of humor. Near the end, he implies that many investment managers take the "fun" out of fund. I began to wonder if fund is the past tense of fun? Thank you Jim for this enjoyable journey.

Not very useful

After reading Mr. Ware's book, I found his writing style to be witty and concise. However, his book is not at all practical or useful as an investment guide. As a professional money manager, I didn't think that the book had good enough concepts in it to warrant "Beating the Market". Definitely not in the same class as, say, Warren Buffett's annual reports and his letters to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway.
I seriously doubt that applying the concepts in this book will be helpful in "beating the market", especially the S&P 500 index, which has consistently beaten approximately 80% of all actively-managed mutual funds.
This book makes a nice attempt at relating psychology to finance but falls short, in my opinion, by falling back into common sense generalities that should already be known, without having to read this book, by those hoping to profit in the markets.

Look at the Customer images, that's about it,.. you just saved 44.00.

After reading a multitude of positive reviews, and only a handfull of poor reviews, I ponied up the 44.00 plus shipping. After recieving it, I am certain that the flood of positive reviews have been artificially created to water down the legitimate reviews. Here is the real deal,.. what you get. In my opinion, you do not get what you pay for. The book itself is a very well put together paperback with slip cover. It is printed on high quality parchment paper with a decent quality of print. So for anyone who thinks their book was photo copied,.. It probably was. The book itself was well put together, and as far as quality, would be above my expectations for an instructional manual. The content however is extremely lacking in instruction. I am not saying nothing can be learned, but if there weren't a famous artist's name attatched to it,.. I would expect to pay around 5 dollars for the content, which is as follows: a few pages of forward, stating the Artist is super great at freehand script, (DUH), one,.. single,.. page of actual instruction (seen in customer images), three pages of one Alphabet, and two variations. And 30 or so pages of examples of what can be done with that alphabet. That's it. The basic idea of the entire book,.. Draw three guidelines, draw thin guidelines from the provided alphabet, then sculpt the lines, and add flourishes. The reason I find vary little value in this, is that this alphabet, along with 100's of thousands of other alphabets can be found online, and traced right off the internet for FREE!?!?! The reason I paid the premium price, is not because I am in love with the artist,.. or because I was without access to a proper scripted alphabet to trace,.. I bought the book because it touted itself as the number one refference and instructional manual on freehand tattoo script. If one page of instruction is the best you can do,.. Please,.. For shame Boog,.. and shame on the publisher. What they have done is advertised false expectations, wrapped it in a nice package,.. and laughed all the way to the bank. I will never purchase anything associated with the artist Boog again, and will hold a grudge against both him and the publisher for being horrible, dirty liars. Again, one hundred and ten percent of the info in this book is available on the internet,.. and more. I am very interested in looking toward the BJ Bett's sketch books, and it looks like Amazon has a 3 volume set for 90 dollars. I am hoping that there will be more than one measley page of instruction, and theory. Up stroke, downstroke, how do you prefer to sculpt the lines, etc.. I know how to sculpt lines,.. but when I pay 44 freakin dollars to a famous artist,.. I expect to know what their prefference is, and how they would tackle it. I have learned more in 20 seconds of youtube tutorials on handwriting, than this entire book. Furthermore, I have been enriched by the life stories and biographies of many of the worlds leading artists,.. again,.. for free,... by either watching freely provided online video, or articles and blogs they have written. They didn't charge me a dime,.. And I respect them for that. I don't expect things for free, but when you charge me money, give me something I can't find for free after 10 seconds of searching the net,.. seriously.
As for the book seller,.. kudo's to you, qualified for Amazon prime 2 day shipping which is always a plus, came packaged well, and in mint condition. Thanks guys! As for the author and publisher,.. Boog = LAME! I would much rather you steal my money in person,.. at the very least it would add a sort of personal touch, and also display some sort of effort on your part,.. instead of unraveling the scraps in the waste basket next to your sketch desk, and trying to sell them as an instructional manual.

amazing OUTLAW TEXTBOOK for all tattoo artists

I'm a tattoo artist whose long time clientele asks for a lot of old english and script lettering... Get it? Never used computer fonts, always drawn for the customer. Nobody (almost) makes up their own lettering styles from whole cloth, it all comes from somewhere. My big old english letters come from several pages of an old german design textbook--- I take a little from this chart, a little from that one, so it comes out cool and unique. Script was a different matter. For too long my script looked like the lettering chart above the blackboard in the 4th grade! My script improved when, a few years ago,I started studying other artists work, primarily hispanic artists. When I stumbled on this book and ordered it, the potential for expanding your lettering skills exponentially is all there! Which is exactly what happened... And in a hoo doo--voo-doo kinda way, all of a sudden so many clients started reguesting fancy script... So I whip out this book for guidance and draw it up slick and charge a very reasonable price and I'm in the name and long pretentious slogans business! All kinds of real cool looking styles, how to form every letter in a wide variety of ways. Highly recommended for tattooers or any artist.

Only shows you how to do basic cursive

The book only explains step by step how to draw basic script cursive. The book shows other types of lettering like old english and block lettering with no instructions for those. Kind of dissappointing when your wanting to learn different styles, you end up only getting one.

The title of this book says it all!

I rarely like self help books nor am I willing to read them from cover to cover, but this book is a an exception. The book expands upon the theme proposed in the title. It is about being honest and real and really brave. The book was very stimulating and offered a new perspective on deepening communication and intimacy with others and more importantly with myself. It starts where other books on co-dependency begin. A fun and stimulating read.

I was tired of being one of the 'nice dead people'

"I was tired of being one of the 'nice dead people' in the world, so the title of this book spoke to me. I was totally skeptical that it could really help. But after reading it I really was inspired to start "dancing in rhythm to the beat of my own soul, and learning how to enjoy it when people freak out about it." (A quote from the book.) It really has become my guide from depressed "doormat" through
overly "obnoxious" aggressiveness to an evolved, enlightened, more empathic assertiveness. Kelly's real life stories, hilarious humor and refreshing theories teach the mechanics of integrity and loyalty with oneself. It is convincing me of the self defeating dynamics behind self sacrifice. Plus the pratical principles and tools of Nonviolent Communication are helping me with my only relationship issue - "Self Abandonment!"

A must read, part of the NVC trilogy.

As soon as I finished reading the book, I wanted to reread it right away, which I did. It fits in my top 10, side by side with other books on the same subject: Non-Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and Stop Being Nice, Be True by Thomas d'Ansembourg (in french: Cessez d'etre gentil, Soyez vrai!). At first, when I saw the title of Bryson's book I was afraid it could be a kind of plagiarism of d'Ansembourg's book, since the titles are so much alike. But my concerns were soon dissipated after reading a few pages. This third book is purely a distinctive essay and an astonishing marvel like the other two. It makes its way using a totally different prose, delivering a mean to grasp NVC from a totally different perspective. Bryson puts it down in a colorful language and a wealth of provocative ideas and imaginative ways of thinking. Bryson also departs from the other two because he wants and likes to play with words and language. Thus his book is also an artwork. I had a hard time at first since I am not accustomed to this kind of writing, but it was such a blessing when I finally got to it. Bryson also likes to say what he thinks, which makes it a lively book, and which enables him to talk about what goes on in his head and heart. This also is a departure from established conventions, and I believe it is a deep source of insight into our own way of beeing. It is also congruent with what he teaches: to be real, open and vulnerable, taking the risk to disclose our self.
Alas the book has many typos. I like to imagine that Bryson made it intentionaly to refrain from beeing perfect. Also, the last two chapters talk about how today's society is bad compared to ancient ones. But I just don't agree with that. Then he stabs men for being violent and promotes women's values. Well this could be an issue in USA, but not quite here in Eastern Canada. Sure men a more prone to be agressive than women almost everywhere in the world, but after all what counts is how this agressivity gets expressed. Men are men and women, women. Then he talks a lot about religion's power. Again an issue in USA but not here. So I wasn't much impressed by these last two chapters. But anyway, this book is still a goldmine to me, the last two chapters simply being veins of lead instead of gold. Of course this applies to me here and now and may not apply to you there and then.
It is certainly an absolute must for whoever is interested in the subject. Enjoy!

This review of Anders' book appeared in the October, 1997 edition of Choice Magazine: "In the definitive work on electric current ratings of cables, Anders, a research engineer at Ontario Hydro who has worked in this field for more than 20 years, puts together the latest advances in cable technology as well as information from the latest integrated electronic components standards to produce a very technically detailed work on this narrow topic. There are 12 chapters organized in three parts; each chapter has many useful references and is filled with equations and derivations. The basis for all cable ratings is heat production; as such, Anders discusses how the heat is produced and how to calcualte the resulting cable temperature in the first part of the book, "Modeling." The second part, "Evaluation of Parameters," shows how to calculate the electrical and thermal parameters of a cable needed for calculations presented in the first part. The final portion, "Advanced Topics, " covers special situations and numerical methods. This is an updated and more detailed book than B.M. Weedy's Thermal Design of Underground Systems (1988).
