In the beginning there was Rhythm !

I think rhythm study is highly neglected in modern western music education, I studied piano for many years and of course you have to learn how to read rhythmic notation to be able to read music but there was no study of rhythm itself in all my studies. I felt a need to learn more about rhythm and I started to play the djembe and I certainly do not regret it, for apart from learning to play the djembe I have become a better pianist. This book is great to begin rhythm studies, I wish I had had this book many years ago, I highly recomend it for all musicians regardless of instrument because there is more to music than just melody and harmony, you have to have a good understanding of rhythm also.
But I want more,there are available tons of thick books about harmony but hardly anything about rhythm so I hope the author writes another book.
(I read somewhere that the late French composer Messiaen had compleated a big book about rhythm just before he died, I hope this is true and that it will be published soon).

Even if you aren't a drummer don't discount this one!

As a bass player I'm always looking for ways to keep my grooves fresh. You always have to worry about falling ino the trap of laying out on the same rhythms all the time. This book will give you a kick in the pants though. As someone who has studied music at a college level, and knows how to read music I was concerned the charts would be a pain since I've known how to read music for years. However picking up on them was not confusing at all..and in fact it's very much tied into the way you count on regular notation and it's really not a problem. Afro-Cuban/Latin and African rhtyhms are the focus here but you can use this on anything. I found myself taking a latin rhythm and adding one note here or there, and changing the notes and turning it into a funk riff or something. I'm not nearly done working through this book..some of the exercises are a challenge, especially on a pitched instrument. However in the end they do serve to freshen up your grooves. I'm going to recommend this to all the rhythm players in my band. Thanks.

I am finding this book very useful. It teaches important rhythmic concepts in very direct ways. The only thing that I question is the decision not to use standard musical notation. The book is supposed to be for musicians of all instruments: why not write the rhythms in a language that will be understood almost universally by musicians instead of creating a different system (which admittedly is fairly simple and visual)? By doing this, perhaps they are opening up their audience to some non-musicians, but at the risk of alienating the musicians the book was meant for.

Eleanor agrees to have him write to her and John Henry reassures her that he will be good to her

This is a short story about a mail order bride in the 1800’s. Eleanor is at finishing school when she receives word that her parents have died. At the end of the tem, she would be homeless. Her friend Penny is going west to be a mail order bride to a man named Amos. She suggests that Eleanor came as well. Penny writes to her fianc� and he responds that he has a neighbor that needs a wife. Eleanor agrees to have him write to her and John Henry reassures her that he will be good to her, but that he would spank her if she breaks his rules. She agrees to marry him and comes west. When she gets there, she is sick, but she still agrees to go through the marriage ceremony. She takes a few days to get better and then starts to work in the house. That night, he comes in and tells her that she will get a preventative spanking so that she will know that she does not want to earn one. He spanks hard and she is very sore. But, they still consummate their marriage that night. He also tells her that she needs to learn how to do stuff around the ranch. And so, he proceeds to teach her how to ride a horse, clean out a barn, feed the chickens, milk the cows, etc. Of course, she gets many spanking along the way. The spankings are hot and, for the most part, deserved. I just didn’t feel the love between them and I think that John Henry found excuses to spank her. I give this story 3 stars.

Eleanor knew what she was getting into before she committed to John Henry. He had written her to let her know he was willing to marry her, but that he was a very busy rancher who spanked for discipline. What follows are glimpses into Eleanor’s sex life that seem to evolve around her being disciplined. Some of the scenes felt contrived, like the gossiping one. I never got to feel for either character outside of sex, so I never understood how they came to love each other so dearly, but it is fantasy and it’s what we want to believe which makes it a good story.

Could not put it down, kept my interest from start to finish. Very good plot, great character interaction. I like that it has some excitement and some history, but it wasn't allowed to totally break them apart hat any time. Lots of discipline and hot scenes.

All GRE takers should buy this. Now. And rush the shipping.

I just finished taking the GRE last month - I had only 3 weeks to study because of an administrative glitch, so I needed a good resource and some quick shipping (thanks, Amazon). For my overall study guide, I picked Princeton Review based on previous use of their products and the overall positive reviews, and I was generally very pleased with it and its ability to help me work through the entire test prep matter in 3 weeks. That said, I could not have achieved my verbal score of 770 without this book from Barron's. I'm actually not sure I would have come closer than 700-720....it's that good. A reviewer for the Princeton Review general guide recommended this Barron book and I must second that review and all other five-star reviews here. The word list is EXTREMELY comprehensive and the exercises and 10-word unit breakdown really help you learn. I wound up going unit by unit. For each one, I'd read all the words and definitions and identify the ones I didn't know (or didn't "really" know...maybe I had a hunch but not a clear sense). For those unknown words, I wrote them down in a notebook, with a definition in my own words and a sentence I made up myself (Barron's also has sentences which will help you understand the word better but I think making up your own definitions and sentences and then writing them down helps it sink in). After working through all 80 units (whew) I turned to the notebook list of "trouble" words and basically quizzed myself and had others quiz me in multiple rounds, where in each round I highlighted the words I still didn't know, until that list got smaller and smaller and then disappeared. It was a lot to do in three weeks but Barron's really helped me focus. Seriously - get this book and you will maximize your score. For people like me whose verbal and essay scores are most important, this book is really worth the time it takes to work through. Get it! Get it now! Good luck, everyone!

Awesome Prep for the GREs

When I was studying for the GREs, I became a crazy person. It is difficult to improve your verbal score, so I knew that I needed an extra study aid to memorize the necessary vocabulary words. I decided to purchase this book in particular because of the great reviews. Needless to say, the reviews were accurate and the book was amazing!!
I would go through a chapter and make an index card for each word that I did not recognize. I used colored index cards (green for positive words, red for negative, etc.) and on the back I divided it into four squares (short definition, synonyms, antonyms, and an illustration of the word...it sounds crazy but it worked!). The end of each chapter included several exercises for the new terms (matching, true/false, and filling in the blanks). I found this extremely helpful; it was engaging and stimulating, which is important when you are studying mundane vocabulary terms. I completed the entire book and managed to memorize the unfamiliar words. I believe that my success on the verbal section of the GREs (I managed to get a 162!) are due, in part, to the activities and words found in this book.
As a poor college student, the price of this book was AWESOME. That along with the fact that it was super helpful makes it a great purchase!

Helpful in getting those few extra words

The layout of this book is pretty efficient for reading words and seeing them in context. The drills after every ten words also helps cement them in place. I only had two weeks before the exam so I had to read large chunks at a time. This approach probably hindered my ability to absorb some of it as I would start drifting while reading. After going over the 800 words, I only had time to scan the 300 roots. I strongly recommend that if you do decide to use this book, you give yourself enough time to go over the 800 words and the 300 roots. In fact, if I had to do it over again, I'd make sure I got through the roots before tackling the words.

Having said all that, the only complaint that I have is that as a Christian, I started to grow weary of reading numberless passages that either stated or implied that I am a rube for believing that the Bible is true.
