Dan Shephard is the new James Bond

I read my first book in the Dan (Spider) Shepherd series out of curiosity and quickly became hooked. Mr. Leather has an interesting style of writing that keeps shifting focus from one character to the next. He doesn't use chapter headings or numbers so you move quickly from one character to another without warning. I found it interesting to read the attitude towards the United States and how we do things compared to the British way. In fact, the most difficult thing about reading these books is trying to understand the British slang. I find that reading these books on my Kindle Fire prevents me from jumping ahead to read the ending (a bad habit) and spoiling the suspense.

If you enjoy good solid characters, intriguing story lines, and fast paced action then this is a series you must read. I have now read the entire series and can't wait for the next book to be written. I was looking for something different and James Leather provided it in grand style.

A great read!

I just finished reading this book and found it very entertaining. After a rather slow start, the pace picked up considerably and I was drawn fully into the plot line. "Spider" Shepherd's character is well done as it is in all the books of this series. Great job Stephen Leather!

I haven't experienced that often in my writing life, but when I did, it horrified me. My work style is hands-on-keyboard-butt-in-chair-get-the-story-told, and I adhered to it as I wrote HIDDEN. Problem was, the muse wasn't doing her job, and while there were words on the page, they weren't saying what I wanted them to say. They were just words without soul.
�
When I was writing the original version of HIDDEN, I had recently finished a dark, twisty historical gothic, and maybe the last vestiges of that story were haunting me. But whatever the case, I demanded more of myself in regard to HIDDEN.
�
Tatiana deserved a book that would do justice to her story. She's lived through such horror and evil, and she has survived. Not unscathed. The years of torment as Duncan Bane's prisoner and Gavin Ward's scientific test subject have left deep scars, but she has survived. She's incredibly resilient and strong. And she deserved a story that would let her shine.
�
No problem. I scrapped the book I had worked on to that point and started fresh, because that original version didn't just shortchange Tatiana, it didn't do justice to Tristan's tale. And he deserved better, too. He's an amazing man, sexy and tough and incredibly smart, with more than a few demons of his own. Like Tatiana, he has faced the inferno and walked out the other side. Not unscathed. He carries a ton of baggage, but he's found a way to deal.
�
So I wrote. And wrote. And for a while I thought all was good. Then I took a deep breath and read--really read--what was on those pages. And they just weren't good enough. The muse had decided to extend her trip and appeared to have no intention of returning home any time soon. And it wasn't just Tatiana and Tristan who were due a better story, it was the readers who so loved and supported DRIVEN. I wanted to give readers a book that would make them hold their breath in places, gasp in others, and wish there was just one more chapter. Or two. Or three. You know the sort of book I mean. The one where you hate to leave the characters behind.
�
At that point, I knew what I had to do. I scrapped that second version of HIDDEN, and I started anew, delving deep to pull out the story that really needed to be written. And the deeper I dug, the more the words flowed, and in the end, I felt I had done it right. As the story closed, I hated to leave the characters behind. I stared at the last page and wished there was just one more chapter...But that would be the beginning of a whole new story, LOL!

That was back in 2007, writing the book for its 2008 release. Fast forward a few years, and I revisited HIDDEN. I tweaked a few scenes, added some new ones, and changed up the cover. And here it is, fresh and shiny. I hope you love this story as I do.
�
I'll close with a couple of tidbits about Tatiana: she hates tight, closed spaces, and she hates wide-open spaces...which sort of makes for a bit of a conundrum; and Tristan: when he was a kid, he had a pet rat, a white one.

Wonderful Second Book!

Genetically created, Tatiana was raised in an underground lab with two siblings, Wizard (Driven) and Yuriko, whom Tatiana believes are dead. Learning solely from computers, her people skills never developed properly. Now on a mission, Anna is in search of the evil doctor who tormented her. Using her DNA, he created a terribly devastating virus, which leaves the infected horribly mutated and violent. In a plight to locate the doctor's lab hidden underground in the Northern Waste, Anna encounters a group of people. One amongst them is the handsome, electrifying blue eyed Tristan. Together, with each of them hiding their own secrets, Tristan leads Tatiana to an underground facility where mutated humans prowl parts of the tunneling system.

The growth of Tristan and Anna's relationship was extremely satisfying as they discovered each other's secrets and the feelings they never thought to experience. I loved Tristan. His secrets were fabulous twists to this story. And Anna, watching her grow and discover there is much more inside her than the emotionless person she thought herself to be.

I couldn't have asked for a better ending. It was heart-warming. Eye-watering--a perfect ending to a fantastic action packed story! No matter what genre of romance Eve writes, gothic historical, paranormal or futuristic, I am sucked right in. I have enjoyed each and every one of her books. Hidden was definitely a great read and I would highly recommend anyone to pick this one up!

Set near the end of the twenty-first century. All countries and governments crumbled over fifty years ago, replaced by harsh wastelands.

Tatiana and her siblings, Wizard and Yuriko, had been engineered before birth in an isolated laboratory buried by the Old Dominion. Tatiana spent half her life underground, in a cage. Gavin Ward, a man with unlimited resources and no conscience, often sliced bits of her away to study and experiment upon. Gavin and Tolliver, the mad man's partner, believed her to be a key, to both genocide and salvation. Together, the men used her genetic tissue to create a plague that could decimate the world.

Tatiana has escaped the underground lab. Now she is out to kill Ward, Tolliver, and anyone else who gets their thrills by creating plagues. It soon becomes apparent that one of Gavin Ward's plagues has gotten free. Those exposed are contained for the moment. The bodies of the poor victims slowly rot away, leaving mutated zombie-like creatures. The only hope of a cure rests with Tristan, a man Tatiana came across recently in the Northern Waste. No matter how attracted Tatiana is to Tristan, she keeps him at arm length. The scientist may be the world's only hope, but should he learn what an enigma she is, not to mention all her unusual abilities, Tatiana could very well find herself an imprisoned lab rat all over again.

**** This tale begins with the same taste as "Mad Max: Beyond Thunder Dome" and transforms into the same flavor as "Resident Evil". I cannot think of a better way to describe it. The story jumps around a bit, letting in parts of his and her pasts seemingly at random. Yet, somehow, the author makes the whole thing work. The ending feels rushed to me, but all-in-all I found Tatiana's story to be extremely well done. ****

The Ultimate in Futuristic Romance (A Grade)

If you enjoyed the first book, Driven, then you should not miss this sequel about a woman living on the edge. Gritty and fierce are only a few words to explain this book and the master storytelling of Eve Kenin
Hidden takes place in the year 209 in the frigid tundra called the Northern Waste. There is a woman named Tatiana whose job is to retrieve stolen items. Tatiana was once a victim of a crazed scientist who tried to make her and her siblings the perfect weapons to help take over the world. Tatiana has an amazing genetic makeup that allows her to read people's thoughts and regenerate from any illness or scar. Tatiana was able to escape living for the moment when she will take down Gavin Ward, the scientist who experimented on her. She is looking for Tolliver, the one man who can lead her to Ward since he is his right hand man.
There is another man who watches Tatiana. Tristan is also on a mission where he must try and stop a plague that could destroy mankind. One of Archer's Better Novels

With this novel, Jeffrey Archer lives up to his billing as a master storyteller. He quickly gets you involved with the story and situation, and makes you believe you are right there in the middle of the novel as one of the characters. Just when you think you have things figured out, he takes a hard turn with an ending you probably won’t see coming. If you have enjoyed Archer’s other books, I believe this one ranks up there with one of his best. I purchased this a while ago for just $2.99 during a Kindle promotion vs. its normal price of $9.99: I certainly believe I received more than $9.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.

A clever tale by a master storyteller

This was another revisit to a book I had read a while ago prompted by an Amazon deal for a Kindle copy for pocket change. Once again I enjoyed revisiting a book I had enjoyed before and surprisingly there were only a few parts that I really remembered.

There are several parts to a pretty complex plot. At the beginning East-Ender Danny Cartwright proposes to his pregnant girlfriend, Beth Wilson and then goes out with Bernie, Beth's brother and Danny's best mate, to a pub to celebrate. There are four drunken men in the pub and one of them makes obscene suggestions to Beth and then picks a fight with Danny and Bernie. The outcome of the brawl is that Danny is stabbed in the leg by the leader of their opponents who then stabs Bernie fatally.

The twist in the tale is that the leader of the pack, who call themselves "the Musketeers", is an eminent and very clever lawyer who concocts a bogus story that Danny killed his best friend. Danny is arrested for murder and in court the Musketeers stick by their story and Danny is given a life sentence.

Archer then brings his own prison experience into play when he describes prison conditions and the developing personal relationship with his cellmates, especially with Nick Moncrieff, an intelligent and cultured heir to a knighthood who looks uncannily similar to Bernie. Nick helps Bernie to with his education and social skills and they become inseparable. This sets the scene for Danny's determination to seek revenge on each of the Musketeers.

It is a very entertaining story as Danny plots his revenge and as uses his new social and business skills to track down each Musketeer and establish a new life. Jeffrey Archer's books can never be called literary fiction but there are few authors of this genre who can beat him as a master storyteller of complex and entertaining plots.

The story line was good and kept your attention consistently. However, I found it impossible to believe that all the people did not recognize Danny as an imposter. Also impossible to believe was the killer's steps from the murder scene to the bar, to his house, taking clothes off, showering, dressing and returning to the scene to call the police in some seven minutes!

Great Study Tool

I purchased this in addition to Pass The New York Notary Public Exam Second Edition. I'm not sure if I needed this one as well. But it didn't hurt. Turned out to be an excellent study tool. Makes the Notary Law easy to understand. I read it cover to cover, quizzing myself around 10 times. Passed on the first try!!! But the actual test was harder than I thought it would be. The 40 multiple choice questions are worded differently than in this book that lead you to doubt yourself. They give it a twist. Go with your gut. You studied hard. You know your stuff. And memorize the fees. Good luck!!!

I found this book to be just what I needed to take the Notary Public exam. It has many and varied questions, together with the answers, so you don't have to guess, you can study the right answer. I would definitely recommend this book, not just to people who want to take the exam, but to everyone, so they can learn the law and don't have to speculate.

I've been working with MSBuild now for about a year and have learnt it solely from other people feeding me strips of information here and there. Recently I have been working on an enterprise project that requires the utmost attention concerning automated builds.

I searched for anything on MSBuild and came across this gem. Even though I have decent experience in MSBuild I read this book from front to back twice over and was exceptionally impressed with how this book was put together. The examples were very straight forward and understandable even to a few of my friends who have no idea about MSBuild. I feel that so long as the reader has an understanding of XML, then they can understand the examples in this book. The chapter 1 quick starts are greating for getting straight into the basics and getting a great feel for the direction the books takes you in.

There is some fantastic advice and guidance for customizing MSBuilds, batch building and incremental building and there are 3 chapters dedicated to Team Foundation Build which were highly educational for me in not only a gathering a better understanding of the build process in Team Foundation but also a stronger understanding of how to utilize Build Agents, retention policies, triggers, and unit testing within Team Foundation Build.

This book quite simply in my humble opinion, is a "must have" for anybody that is serious in learning the art of build mastering and is a "must have" for build masters as an A+ reference.

Kudos to Sayed and William for writing this much needed gem. Well done.

Best book on the subject, hands down.

This book is outstanding. A literal step-by-step walk through of MSBuild and Team Build. I have been working with these products for almost a year and learned them on my own, via various websites, blogs, msdn walk-throughs, etc. There are a myriad of sources with bits and pieces of the information you need, and I feel this book pulls them all together in one very well written book.

This is the best source to get going from beginner to intermediate level with MSBuild and Team Build. Obviously you need to dive into the products and get your feet wet intensely to gain expert knowledge of the two. However, this book takes you leaps and bounds into an advanced level of knowledge. The msdn topics have everything else you need as a reference beyond this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is both new or experienced with MSBuild or Team Build. Great work!

The missing MSBuild manual

I'm a developer on MSBuild; Sayed wrote this book with our encouragement, and we reviewed it for accuracy and completeness, so I can recommend it. The documentation for MSBuild in 2.0 and 3.5 was not great; I consider this something like the missing manual. Unfortunately there aren't many other MSBuild books; fortunately Sayed did a good job on this one.

We're fixing a lot of what's "missing" in MSBuild in the upcoming version 4.0 -- I hope Sayed can do a 2nd edition when that comes out. Plus, our docs should be better then :-)

About the Author
Alex Korb, PhD, is a neuroscientist who has studied the brain for over fifteen years, starting with an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Brown University. He received his PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he wrote his dissertation and numerous scientific articles on depression. He is currently a postdoctoral neuroscience researcher at UCLA in the department of psychiatry. Outside of the lab, he is a scientific consultant for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, and is head coach of the UCLA Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. He has a wealth of experience in yoga and mindfulness, physical fitness, and even stand-up comedy.

Foreword writer Daniel J. Siegel, MD, is executive director of the Mindsight Institute and associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. He is author of The Developing Mind, The Mindful Brain, and other books, and founding editor of the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology.

For the discerning depressive
By everyone's a critic
I don't want to make any unscientific claims here, but I've found that a lot of the people I know who are depressed are also pretty smart. Which means that self-help books by celebrity rehab graduates and costumed spiritual gurus aren't going to be of any help. Another unscientific conjecture: in my experience, depressives tend to have finely tuned aesthetic sensibilities, which means reading clunky technical literature is a daunting challenge, particularly through the fog of one's symptoms.

The Upward Spiral stands out from the pack for three significant reasons:
1. It's based in evidence.
This book isn't made up of snake oil panaceas, or Hallmark platitudes, or overblown pep-talk rhetoric. It's built on a foundation of clinical trials and observations of the brain, as up-to-date with contemporary neuroscience as possible.
2. It reads well.
The problem with writing based on scientific evidence often ends up being that the prose is dry and boring, or patronizingly dumbed-down, or frustratingly abstract. Korb is no Adam Phillips, but he writes about the structure and function of the brain more clearly than anyone else I've read in the past, frequently deploying effective analogies to familiar objects and ideas.
3. It includes advice.
Another problem with some science-based texts is that knowing what synapses fire at what time doesn't really help you figure out what to do outside your skull. Korb gives a suggestion on practically every page.

This book isn't going to cure you. It addresses a specific aspect of depression: the way symptoms reinforce themselves and inspire new ones, resulting in the downward spiral that drags you down to your deepest depths. The optimistic implication of the title is that just like a small trigger can drag you down, an effective intervention can start enough momentum to carry you up.

I'm of the belief that if you're depressed, you probably have to figure out how and why it started, and determine what specific patterns of thought originated as a result. That means seeing a therapist or analyst, possibly for a long time. But in the meantime, you have to get yourself out of bed every day, and this book gives you some idea how. To my knowledge, it's the best of its kind.

The proof is in the eating of the pudding

I've never written a review on Amazon before. It never really mattered to me. This book compelled me to pop my cherry. Ever since my father passed away 5 years ago via an unexpected heart attack, I've been duking it out with severe depression and anxiety. I was on a downward spiral before then, but I went much deeper into the abyss. Up until I read this book this past Friday, I suffered atleast one panic attack a day. Chances are if you're here, you know what I'm talking about, for the uninitiated, it literally feels like you're drowning under a tidal wave. I wouldn't recommend it..but I do recommend The Upward Spiral by Alex Korb because since that day I haven't suffered one. Don't get me wrong, the waves are still there, but more calm, less electric. There is no miracle cure, but with this book I know I'm on my way, and that is not an ordinary utterance from me. I don't want it to sound like I drank the koolaid, or ate some sort of special pudding, this book requires no leap of faith, it requires experimentation and pragmatism. Please, if any of this makes sense to you, check it out. No one deserves to feel that way (with very few exceptions), and take it from me, a downward spiral is just an upward spiral waiting to happen. Lots of love.

This is the best no-nonsense, no BS book on depression I've ever ...

This is the best no-nonsense, no BS book on depression I've ever read. Alex explains everything in a science-based but easily understandable way that anyone can understand without having to be a neuroscientist. I also appreciates that he emphasized neither the "victim of biology/circumstance" nor the Pollyanna "just think positive thoughts" approach to depression. A depressed brain is just a brain with certain patterns that can be changed. Alex provides a firm scientific foundation for how a person can begin the process of changing the depressed patterns of their brain. The book empowers the individual to take control of their mind and brain. I'm a brain blogger and got many good blogs out of this book. Thank you, Alex!
