Review
This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' did for his. It's that good! Eugene Peterson, author --Eugene Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

The Shack is the most absorbing work of fiction I've read in many years. My wife and I laughed, cried and repented of our own lack of faith along the way. The Shack will leave you craving for the presence of God. Michael W. Smith, Recording Artist --Michael W Smith, Recording Artist - personal endorsement

Reading The Shack during a very difficult transition in my life, this story has blown the door wide open to my soul. Wynonna Judd, Recording Artist --Wynonna Judd, Recording Artist - personal endorsement

About the Author
WM. PAUL YOUNG was born a Canadian and raised among a Stone Age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of former New Guinea. He suffered great loss as a child and young adult and now enjoys the "wastefulness of grace" with his family in the Pacific Northwest. He is also the author of Cross Roads and Eve.

From AudioFile
Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to have an extraordinary experience with God. His great sadness began four years ago on a weekend camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter, Missy, was murdered. What he couldn't know then, but is about to learn, was God's purpose for Missy's death. Roger Mueller's clear, gentle voice characterizes Mac's family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His portrayal of Missy's animated excitement makes her especially believable. His polished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With empathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those who have invited him to the now abandoned, yet transformed, cabin in the wilderness. This compelling fantasy explores themes of love, loss, and blame. G.D.W. AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

My daughter is slowly killing herself after losing her first born soon to a horrific accident. Being that he was also or first grandchild we were all devastated. I choose to believe God is good and He will guide me and my daughter and my entire family to Him and heal us...finally. This book is the beginning of that healing. I will share it with all of them. Thank you!

Meeting God: An Unexpected Journey
By Michael Sholders
Driven by fierce anger after losing his daughter to a perverted killer, the protagonist takes an unexpected journey into a place that expands his mindset on God. As he takes this journey, I found myself traveling with him, and allowing my mind to be expanded on my concept of God as well. Even though this book could never be called a studious piece of theology, it has a powerful message, and that message for me was this 'Your concept of the Almighty God is too small, too confined, and steeped in too much religiosity" God is God, and He can be anything He wishes to be, and He can present Himself in whatever fashion He chooses. He is immutable, inscrutable, and omniscient. Who are we to question His authority, ability, and appearance? So when God shows Himself in The Shack to be large black woman (similar at least in my imagination to Aunt Jemimah), it is at first shocking, then amusing, but ultimately, mind expanding. If this book doesn't allow a person's concept of God to grow, I am not sure what will. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I totally understand how it can be controversial in nature since it allows God to take on an infinitely different image than what the normative thought allows. Some would say that it trivializes God, and while I understand that sentiment, since He is, after all, the same God who would not allow Moses to even look upon His face. He is also the God who did not allow his name to even be pronounced by His people since He is so holy and righteous. In spite of those valid concerns, the concepts espoused in The Shack actually expanded God, without trivializing Him at all. In fact, for me, it actually made Him larger and even more powerful, as well as infinitely more personal than my earlier vision of His majesty. The book portrays Jesus and the Holy Spirit as entirely different characters than portrayed in normally accepted theological boundaries, but again the concepts are fresh, and expanding. I believe that any image that any of us have of the Almighty God is by definition too small regardless of how big it is, so anything that allows us to think fresh thoughts is ultimately valuable. A good, fresh read, highly recommended.

Very profound and thought provoking.

Very profound and thought provoking. I will never look at relationships the same way - God truly does work in mysterious ways. This book opens up the mind and soul to new possibilities and choices for life in loving relationships as we were created to be. Breaks down the barriers that hold us back ... cuts through all the crap and gets to the heart of the matter.

Second Suns: Two Doctors and Their Amazing Quest to Restore Sight and Save Lives, by David Oliver Relin

From the co-author of Three Cups of Tea comes the inspiring story of two very different doctors—one from the United States, the other from Nepal—united in a common mission: to rid the world of preventable blindness.

In this transporting book, David Oliver Relin shines a light on the work of Geoffrey Tabin and Sanduk Ruit, gifted ophthalmologists who have dedicated their lives to restoring sight to some of the world’s most isolated, impoverished people through the Himalayan Cataract Project, an organization they founded in 1995. Tabin was the high-achieving bad boy of Harvard Medical School, an accomplished mountain climber and adrenaline junkie as brilliant as he was unconventional. Ruit grew up in a remote Nepalese village, where he became intimately acquainted with the human costs of inadequate access to health care. Together they found their life’s calling: tending to the afflicted people of the Himalayas, a vast mountainous region with an alarmingly high incidence of cataract blindness.

Second Suns takes us from improvised plywood operating tables in villages without electricity or plumbing to state-of-the-art surgical centers at major American universities where these two driven men are restoring sight—and hope—to patients from around the world. With their revolutionary, inexpensive style of surgery, Tabin and Ruit have been able to cure tens of thousands—all for about twenty dollars per operation. David Oliver Relin brings the doctors’ work to vivid life through poignant portraits of patients helped by the surgery, from old men who cannot walk treacherous mountain trails unaided to cataract-stricken children who have not seen their mothers’ faces for years. With the dexterity of a master storyteller, Relin shows the profound emotional and practical impact that these operations have had on patients’ lives.

Second Suns is the moving, unforgettable story of how two men with a shared dream are changing the world, one pair of eyes at a time.

Praise for Second Suns

“As miracles go, it’s hard to beat making the blind see. Yet that’s exactly what the eye surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Tabin can do. He services poor people in the developing world who have developed cataracts—a clouding of the lens of the eye that is the world’s leading cause of blindness. . . . Second Suns is a hopeful work, a profile of two doctors who have dedicated their lives to bringing light to those in darkness.”—Time

“A compelling and inspiring book . . . Second Suns portrays heroic health care delivered under harrowing conditions: Ruit and his teams carry their equipment on multi-day treks up steep mountain trails, sometimes hiking at night with flashlights or head lamps, to reach settlements where they typically spend several days operating on hundreds of villagers in makeshift surgical theaters.”—The Washington Post

“Second Suns should be required reading for anybody with an interest in humanitarian philanthropy—or, for that matter, a desire to feel a little better about the world.”—Outside

“A detailed, heartfelt account of the work of [two] dedicated pioneers.”—Kirkus Reviews

See You

This world is blinded by darkness. Few can see. . . . Become a lamp unto yourself. —from the last teaching of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha

There is the Nepal of myth, the ice-and-rock realm of Mount Everest, the roof of the world. Then there is the country where most Nepalese actually live. I was still unfamiliar with that other, more earthly, Nepal when I first came to the Khumbu.

I had hiked up to the village of Thame, at twelve thousand feet, with Apa Sherpa. He stood a wiry five foot three and weighed perhaps 120 pounds. Apa’s hair was cropped close, and his head was a thing of beauty—smooth and sun-browned like an exotic nut. Looking at him, you’d never guess he was one of the world’s greatest athletes. But by the age of fifty, Apa had climbed to the top of Everest twenty times; no one had ever stood on the sharp peak of the earth’s highest point more often.

Apa had invited me to Thame to meet his family and gather material about his career in the mountains, hoping that I would write a book about him. I was intrigued, not simply because of his high-altitude achievements but because, unlike many publicity-seeking Western mountaineers, Apa, like most Sherpas, climbed not for glory but to feed his family. He had also dedicated his most recent expeditions to raising money for the schools that surrounded the mountain his people know as Chomolungma, Goddess Mother of the World, and to raising awareness of the toll that global warming was taking on the Khumbu’s receding glaciers.

By the time I arrived, the five-room school Sir Edmund Hillary had built in Apa’s village was planning to lay off two of its teachers because of funding shortages, which would force the older students to walk six hours each day if they wanted to continue attending classes. And the lower portion of Thame had recently been washed away when a lake of glacial meltwater overran its rim and thundered through the valley where Apa had been raised. His family’s home had been spared. So had the house next door, which belonged to the family of Tenzing Norgay, the first person to step onto the summit of Everest, alongside Hillary, in 1953.

Apa Sherpa had taken advantage of his prominence as a mountaineer to move his family from Nepal to suburban Salt Lake City, where his three children could count on a quality education. But his American dream hadn’t panned out as he’d expected; Apa’s attempt to create a line of outdoor clothing had crash-landed shortly after its launch. When he emailed me to introduce himself, he was working in a metal shop, stamping out road signs for Utah’s highways. Apa wasn’t bitter. He described his achievements on Everest with such matter-of-fact modesty that I agreed to accompany him to Nepal on his next expedition.

As the stone and ice immensities of the Himalaya thrust into view around every twist in the trail, Apa led me over swaying suspension bridges and up steep rock staircases with effortless grace. And as we traveled together, he proved to be one of the kindest people I’d ever met. Whenever my breathing became ragged, he’d put a hand on my shoulder. “Slowly, slowly,” he’d say, guiding me to a seat on the nearest stone wall or to a bench at a tea house, where he’d pretend that he, too, was anxious to rest.

At altitude, the air was beautifully crisp, the peaks fairy-tale white. The sky draped over the low stone homes of Thame was the unblemished blue of tourist brochures. Each morning I’d wake to the gentle alarm of yak bells. Cocooned in my warm sleeping bag, I’d open my eyes, peer through puffs of my breath, and watch wood smoke from breakfast fires drift across low stone walls that divided pastures from potato fields. On one side, shaggy black pack animals foraged for grass shoots with delicate lips. On the other, slender plants angled toward the sun, pale green with new growth.

I interviewed Apa’s elderly mother as she spun her prayer wheel and kept my tin mug of butter tea topped up. I also spoke with Apa’s climbing partners, brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I was so enchanted by Thame that I lingered there for several days, resisting the conclusion that was becoming as clear to me as the air above the village: that writing a book about a man climbing the same mountain twenty times, even the world’s highest mountain, even for admirable reasons, was not something I could do well.

Apa was preparing for another attempt on Everest, and though I protested that I could find my way back down the trail to the airstrip at Lukla, where I planned to catch a small plane to Kathmandu, he insisted on accompanying me for the three-day trek. His middle-aged sister-in-law served as our porter, carrying, by a strap balanced across her broad forehead, the expedition bag I could barely lift. And with each step closer to the world of cities, with each foot of altitude lost, I felt more acutely how lucky I had been to get a glimpse into the life of this gentle man, and how much I regretted failing him.

Apa left me at Lukla. I promised that when he returned from Everest, we’d hold a fund-raiser together for the Thame School, which we managed to do a few months later. And I delayed telling him about my pessimistic view of the book’s future. I didn’t want him carrying that disappointment on his way back to the top of the world.

I spent a day sitting on a foggy airstrip, feeling like I’d been cast out of a kind of paradise, waiting for a window to open in the weather so a Yeti Airlines propeller plane could land. Dreadlocked European trekkers lounged against their backpacks, smoking hash or playing hacky sack on the empty runway, killing the hours. Sheets of fog blew by like possibilities, blanketing all of us in gloom, or opening narrow boreholes that revealed the snowfields of the high peaks, hinting at and then denying the splendor that surrounded us. The runway tilted steeply downhill, and everything felt out of balance. Though I was looking up, whenever I got a glimpse of clear sky I felt I was staring down into the ice-blue depths of a glacier.

The sight of those mountains made me think of a promise I’d made to another climber.

I’d met Dr. Geoffrey Tabin late one night the previous winter, in Utah. He approached me in the ballroom of the Cliff Lodge, at the Snowbird ski resort, after I’d given a lecture. Tabin waited until the crowd thinned out. Then he pounced. He told me about his considerable achievements as a climber, which included scaling the Seven Summits, the highest points on each continent. Before inviting me to dinner the following evening, he spoke of his current passion, working with a Nepalese surgeon named Sanduk Ruit to cure blindness in the developing world. Tabin was as tenacious and outgoing as Apa was modest and reserved. I agreed to join him for a meal only because he made it nearly impossible to say no.

We met for Mexican food the next night in Salt Lake City, where Tabin works, when he isn’t overseas, as director of the International Ophthalmology Division at the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center. Or, rather, I watched as the bundle of nervous energy that is Geoff Tabin ticked in his seat like a time bomb and told implausible stories that turned out to be true—he really had been part of a group of adrenaline addicts at Oxford University who invented bungee jumping—while inhaling all his food and half of mine.

“A lot of climbers get all weird and competitive,” Tabin said, his voice high-pitched, his cheeks bulging with carne asada. “I try to take the golden retriever approach to life. Try to be friendly to everyone. You get more done that way.” I could see, even then, that he was more terrier than retriever. Tabin is compact, thickly muscled, and has a habit, once he gets something in his teeth, of not letting go. We spoke of my upcoming trip to Nepal with Apa, and he urged me to look in on his partner in Kathmandu if I had a few hours free. He said proudly that Tilganga, the eye hospital Dr. Ruit had built, was the finest medical facility in Nepal, an assembly line turning out minor miracles of healing. He assured me I’d find Ruit fascinating, if a little intimidating. Tabin’s enthusiasm was infectious, but I couldn’t escape the sensation that I was becoming lodged in the terrier’s teeth.

On the airstrip, I waited seven hours with no sign of an arriving plane. Lukla is one of the world’s most dangerous airports, and closures can last for days. Six months after I left, in similar weather, a Yeti Airlines Twin Otter crash-landed just short of the runway, killing two crew members and all sixteen passengers. Toward dusk, I was losing hope when a chartered helicopter touched down to pick up United Nations staff, and I was able to buy my way onboard.

We flew low, beneath the clouds, tracing the contours of the land. For me, Nepal was Kathmandu and a collection of snow peaks. But as we floated slowly down toward the capital, I saw that the barren, brick-colored hills in between were densely populated. Every slope, no matter its pitch, seemed to have been stripped of trees for cooking fires and sculpted into terraced fields. I observed small figures, bent to their labors, working to draw nourishment from depleted soil. Far below, rust-colored runoff from eroded hillsides pooled like blood where it met what had once been unspoiled mountain streams, staining them with evidence of overpopulation.

With my head leaning against the helicopter’s scuffed window, I felt deflated, as the book I’d come halfway around the world hoping to write receded into the fog like the high peaks of the Himalaya. Dipping beneath storm clouds, we passed over the hill dwellers so closely that I could see our rotor blast ruffle their mud-spattered clothes. But they rarely looked up at us, and I had a peculiar sense of disconnection—that the six of us gliding over their heads in our aluminum capsule were living not only in a different world but in a different century.

Sullenly, I watched the poverty of the mid-hills slide past my window. The thatched huts fastened by pillars of felled trees to denuded hilltops, the men hacking terraces from the dirt with hoes, the women carrying water up from fouled streams that trickled an hour’s hike beneath their homes, the underfed cattle and skinny dogs—all of it scrolled by like a documentary I didn’t want to see. I couldn’t know then how much of the next three years I’d be spending in that landscape, that the brick-red soil of the mid-hills would seep into my clothing and flesh and stain the way I saw not only Nepal but the world.

The air down at four thousand feet felt hot and wet. With each breath I was aware of dense vegetal decay. Despite its powerful engine, our Land Cruiser crept along, averaging only twenty miles an hour on the road from Kathmandu to Rasuwa. The drive had looked like a simple matter on the map I’d studied before setting out. But after hours of crawling first through maddening city traffic, then up a switchback road that climbed out of the smog-filled bowl of the Kathmandu Valley, we were still only beginning our journey, on a long, grinding descent to the Trishuli River.

Our driver, La La, and his young assistant took turns twisting every knob and dial on the dashboard. They had yet to master the operation of the air conditioner, so the windows were open to the scent of manure baking on the steep, terraced fields, and rotting plant matter where the jungle had not yet been slashed and burned. “This vehicle is brand-new,” La La said cheerfully. “Only fifteen days, actually. A lot of the controls is unknown!”

I was sitting in the backseat, next to Sanduk Ruit. Up front, Ruit’s wife, Nanda, leaned her forearms on the windowsill, her blue sari bright against the brown hillsides. Next to her sat one of their daughters. At seventeen, Serabla clearly asserted her status as a modern, emancipated woman. She wore Levi’s, running shoes, and a track jacket.

“Not a bad way to travel, eh, Mommy,” Ruit said to Nanda, who nodded dreamily. The white Land Cruiser had been a gift from a Chinese Australian donor, and Ruit was clearly delighted by it. “When we began these remote surgical camps, we used to ride on the tops of buses with all our cases of gear, isn’t it?”

Each blind turn down the mountain road took me farther from the wood-fired pizza and glass of wine at an Italian restaurant I’d been anticipating in the capital, a small reward I’d been promising myself to dilute the taste of my failed trip to the Khumbu. But when I met Ruit, at Tilganga, he was preparing to leave immediately for a rural area, to perform free cataract surgeries, and, impulsively, he invited me along. I had no sense of Tilganga’s merits as a hospital yet, and didn’t have a handle on Ruit either, but Tabin had been right about at least one thing: Sanduk Ruit was intimidating. He held his large, craggy head high over his barrel chest, and a thatch of thick black hair sat on top of his scalp like a heavy woolen hat. And though he was affectionate with his wife and daughter, he spoke to me gruffly. In brief sentences. Without meeting my eyes.

Ruit was treating our conversation like an interview, so I took out my notepad and conducted one. “We’ll be operating for three days,” he explained. “With luck, we’ll see two hundred cases.”

“Why are we going to Rasuwa?”

“Because there are blind people there,” Ruit said, without a trace of humor.

“But why Rasuwa particularly?” I asked, trying to keep the frustration from my voice.

Ruit exhaled, his eyelids lowered, indicating the effort it took to answer such an obvious question, and then he began to lecture. Rasuwa was one of the poorest regions of Nepal. The Tamang people who lived there were mostly subsistence farmers. Their lands were set unprofitably apart from the commercial center of Kathmandu, to the south, and the tourist magnet of the Khumbu, to the east. Ruit said he had conducted half a dozen free surgical camps in the area and still he was just draining an ocean of need, one teaspoon at a time. “The Tamang of Rasuwa are the most downtrodden people on earth,” he said. “Also the most deserving.”

The poorest of the poor in the most remote area of the world becomes ...
By lifelong learner
I am stunned to read some comments that the book was "too long" or contained "too much information". I was blown away by every aspect of this book and fascinated by the main characters. The courage, dedication, integrity, vision... there are no words to describe how these heros have accomplished what they have managed to do.The dire poverty of Dr. Ruit was instrumental to the plot. The poorest of the poor in the most remote area of the world becomes a doctor and cures tens of thousands of blind, poor inhabitants of the region. Wouldn't you want to know how that happened and what makes him tick?? I did! And Dr. Tabin, a brilliant, kind of rebel and adventure-seeking mountain climbing, Harvard and Yale student is so moved by what he sees, he dedicates his life to the same goal. Again, his background, incredible energy, talent, all filter in to how he becomes the hero he is. I think folks are too used to instant gratification and have lost the ability to focus for more than 10 minutes. Relin's writing is pure poetry as he paints a moving and thoughtful portrait of all concerned. And as far as the controversy with Relin's prior book - it did NOT involve him personally. He was writing a biography and the subject lied and exaggerated certain aspects of himself to Relin. So there was NO shame on Relin's part... he was lied to. Relin's writing is and was, superb.

A book that should change your life in some way or another!
By Jane Lois Lane
Sadly enough, my father (a lifelong liberal who wrote about Civil Rights in America) took his own life while I was in the process of reading this book. I felt great sadness knowing David Oliver Relin let the bait of taunters and condemners take him down, and I am praying for him (it's never too late for God since He is the Master of time). I have been tempted by such thoughts in my life but mainly for feeling useless in a world where so many are suffering. My father's name is David, too, and these suicides put it on my heart to pray a lot and change careers when the answer came: back to nursing school! Yes, with God all things are possible and it's never too late. I am grateful that this book fell into my hands at the right time. The night is darkest before the dawn, my friends. There are so many people, and many whom I have lately surrounded myself with, who proudly wear religious labels (oh, I've done it, too, but oh how empty are words and theology). Although we are not saved by works, it is abundantly clear when some men have God in their hearts and are inspired to help "the least of these" because of that. Geoff Tabin and Sanduk Ruit are two men inspired by the two commandments on which the others "hang," in my humble opinion. Those who have a heart for the "least of these," God will have a heart for, too. Bless you both and all who help in your endeavors, and maybe when I have my nursing degree, I'll be on the front lines with you, fighting to cure all curable and preventable blindness!!

Absolutely beyond emotional comprehension!
By Shugga
I've spent the last 21 years in eye care, currently as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician. I was not prepared for the personal and professional emotions this story brought forth. To the non medical, non ophthalmic reader, this story will move you. As an eye care professional, it will inspire, humble and leave you in tears. You'll think back to that patient that you impacted greatly, and the one that you didn't reach in time. You'll want to dig deeper to make your impact even greater. If not, it's time to move from patient care.

135 million people in the world are blind. 3 out of every 4 could be cured with a 10 minute, $25 surgery.

A Place for Truth: Leading Thinkers Explore Life's Hardest QuestionsFrom IVP Books

Many today pursue knowledge and even wisdom. But what about truth? In an age that disputes whether truth can be universalized beyond one's own personal experience, it seems quaint to speak of finding truth. But whether in the ivory towers of the academy or in the midst of our everyday lives, we continue to seek after the true, the beautiful and the good. Since its founding at Harvard in 1992, The Veritas Forum has provided a place for the university world to explore the deepest questions of truth and life. What does it mean to be human? Does history have a purpose? Is life meaningful? Can rational people believe in God? Now gathered in one volume are some of The Veritas Forum's most notable presentations, with contributions from Francis Collins, Tim Keller, N. T. Wright, Mary Poplin and more. Volume editor Dallas Willard introduces each presentation, highlighting its significance and putting it in context for us today. Also included are selected question and answer sessions with the speakers from the original forum experiences. Come eavesdrop on some of today's leading Christian thinkers and their dialogue partners. And consider how truth might find a place in your own life.

From Booklist
For almost 20 years,Veritas Forums have convened on some of the most prestigious college campuses in America, e.g., Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Penn State. Characteristic of each is an unashamedly Christian perspective on matters of truth, worldview, ethics, and related topics. The present volume represents 15 highlights from this long line of faith-based presentations, given by some of the most profound thinkers alive, Christian or otherwise. Included are notables like Richard John Neuhaus, N. T. Wright, Alister McGrath, and Dallas Willard. Among the book’s six sections are several devoted to atheism, faith and science, the nature of humanity, and social justice. Considering that each lecture was given in a university classroom or auditorium, the tone is only moderately academic. In fact, several of the presentations function more as a dialogue than a straightforward lecture, including one with controversial Princeton ethicist Peter Singer. At least a third of the presentations have their accompanying Q&A sessions. A book that truly seems to scratch where many postmodern people itch. --Wade Osburn

Review
"You will be ultimately strengthened in your Christian faith if you read carefully this genuinely unique book." (Darold Morgan, Christian Ethics Today, Winter 2012)

"The Veritas Forum began at Harvard University in 1992 as an effort to engage students with the deep issues of truth and meaning that its founders believed were lacking in the modern university setting. In A Place for Truth, Dallas Willard has edited a collection of speeches from two decades of Veritas discussions that attempt to address life's most difficult questions." (Relevant Magazine, September-October 2010)

"Since its founding in 1992, The Veritas Forum has provided a place for the university world to explore the deepest questions of truth and life. A Place for Truth gathers the Forum's most notable presentations, with contributions from Francis Collins, Tim Keller, N.T. Wright, Mary Poplin, and more." (Kathleen Samuelson, CBA Retailers & Resources, August 2010)

"These essays, mostly by Christian thinkers, are serious dialogue about important questions. Whether you find in them enlightenment and encouragement, or much to challenge, I hope you will agree that The Veritas Forum has done a service to the academy by encouraging the discussions." (from the foreword by Harry Lewis, former dean, Harvard College, and author of Excellence Without a Soul)

Displays the Christian Mind at Work for a Wide Audience
By Fr. Charles Erlandson
I eagerly awaited this book, A Place for Truth, edited by Dallas Willard, and I immediately set to devouring it. On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and its presentation of Christian Truth but thought that it displayed weaknesses in certain places.

The title, A Place for Truth, comes from Harvard University's motto, "Veritas," which is Latin for "Truth." This volume is a collection of 15 presentations made before the Veritas Forum, a group originally started at Harvard to help restore to the American university its age-old character as "a place for truth." The chapters in the book reflect the oral nature of the original presentations, which helps make the articles relatively easy to read (considering the complexity of the topics) which but also presents certain limitations. Because of the blend of learning and readability, I find A Place for Truth to be a very welcome book. It is a book that is simple without being simplistic, profound without being indigestible, and which asks and answers some of the most important questions of life for all. One of the unexpected things I experienced in the book was the large number of narratives that were included as a means of presenting Christian Truth. This is a book well-suited to our postmodern age.

The first three chapters focus on arguments that focus on Truth itself, and they help set the tone and direction for the remainder of the volume. Chapters 4-6 relate to Faith and Science, Chapters 7 and 8 to Atheism, Chapters 9-11 on Meaning and Humanity, Chapter 12 on the Christian Worldview, and Chapters 13-15 on Social Justice.

Overall, it was immensely encouraging to read chapter after chapter of intelligent Christian (most actively engaged in teaching at universities and all of them highly educated) from a variety of universities speaking convincingly and intelligently about Truth and especially Christian Truth. A Place for Truth is a book that can and should be widely read. While containing the thought of Christian intellectuals, the chapters are, for the most part, very readable, largely because of the oral nature of the original presentations. It makes an excellent introduction for Christian college students who want to learn more about how to integrate their faith with their learning, and I can even see it being used in Christian high schools. The educated Christian laymen will also benefit from this book, as well as pastors who might want to read a collection of brief works on relevant contemporary topics. One of the audiences I think the book might serve best is those who are not Christians but want to see a more articulate and informed Christian mind at work.

The chapters, however, are not of equal value or quality. Of the three chapters addressing Truth, I found the one by Tim Keller, "Reason for God: The Exclusivity of Truth," to be the best. In fact, it's one of the 3 best chapters in the entire book. Richard John Neuhas' chapter was not particularly enlightening, while the chapter by Os Guinness presented a lot of good material but, it turns out, too much for so little space. Keller, in his chapter, does a masterful job of presenting 5 ways that people today tend to deal with the exclusive truth claims of religion in order to avoid them. It is a primer on how modern and postmodern people want to do away with Truth, and Keller provides brief but powerful arguments against each of the 5 attacks on Truth.

The 3 chapters on Faith and Science each contain much helpful material, but each has its own weakness. Collins' chapter spends too much time dealing with background and biography and is not as focused as it could have been, while the exchange between McGrath and Helfand (Christian and atheist) involves an interchange that works better when there is a lot of time and not only a few pages to deal with such complex issues. Ross' is a fascinating chapter that weaves scientific thought into the story of his conversion to Christ.

Vitz's look at the Psychology of Atheism is fascinating and deals with the theory of the defective father as a cause of atheism but is a fairly limited look at the psychology of atheism. Dallas Willard's chapter on "Nietzsche Versus Jesus Christ" is one of the 3 best chapters. In explaining Nietzsche's philosophy, Willard not only explains much of the foundation for contemporary secular thought but also a stinging indictment of an ostensibly Christian culture that isn't very Christian. If you want to understand more about why modern and postmodern man thinks and acts the way he does, Willard's chapter is as good a place to start as any.

The other chapter that I found to be one of the 3 best was the one by N.T. Wright, "Simply Christian," which is an executive summary of his new book by the same name. "Echoes of a Voice," deals with kinds of evidence for the God of the Bible; "Staring at the Sun," is about talking wisely about God; and "Reflecting the Image" concerns how to be a genuine human being. Wright says a lot in the little space allotted him.

I found many of the remaining chapters less valuable (though still worth reading), either because they were on a relatively narrow topic (such as the chapter on Can Robots Become Humans?) or because they didn't go as deeply into the subject as they might have (such as Sider's chapter on "The Whole Gospel for the Whole Person"). Poplin's chapter, "Radical Marxist, Radical Womanist, Radical Love" is a fine reflection on the love of Mother Teresa but the title is sensationalist and not very relevant to Poplin's discussion. The one other chapter I thought wonderfully provocative and joyful was Begbie's "The Sense of an Ending," which artfully presents the Christian story in an unusual way: the sense of ending we expect in music.

While containing some weak spots, A Place for Truth is, on the whole, a wonderful introduction to how Christian Truth can be brought with power to a dying world which is dying nowhere more than at its universities. Here is an outline of the chapters in the book so the reader can more easily apprehend the scope and sequence of A Place for Truth.

Veritas Forum's Timely Contribution to Thoughtful Discourse about Faith: Review of "A Place for Truth," edited by Dallas Willard
By Alan L. Chase
Since The Veritas Forum was born in 1992, I have watched with great interest its ever-expanding influence on university campuses across the United States and the world. The Forum grew out of the landmark book by Kelly Monroe Kullberg, "Finding God at Harvard." I read the book with fascination as it recounted the storied of Harvard students, faculty, staff and alumni who shared how they found themselves drawn to faith while within the gravitational field of Harvard University. While originally founded as a training ground for ministers to serve in the parishes of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Harvard University has wandered far from its original vision and religious roots. So, it was a breath of fresh air for me to read about and then to meet women and men whose faith flourished in what others have found to be a spiritual desert.

For almost twenty years, The Veritas Forum staff have worked with campus leaders to sponsor events that promote open, honest and civil dialogue between Christian intellectuals and those who do not share that same faith. "A Place for Truth," captures excerpts from some of the most impactful of the addresses and dialogues that have taken place during Veritas Forum events.

I found it encouraging and significant that the Foreword to the book was penned by Dr. Harry Lewis, former Dean of Harvard College. He states very eloquently the need for a book such as this:

"The essays in this book are based on talks about some of the big questions of life. The discussions took place in universities, not as part of the daily life of the academic family but instead at events sponsored by The Veritas Forum. It is awkward to take up sch questions within the academy itself, unless they can be reduced to matters of psychology or cultural study. And yet students ask questions when they are alone under starry skies or in the blaze of city lights, when they confront decisions affecting the lives of their loved ones, and when they are faced with pivotal decisions about their own lives. The discomforts attendant on this search for the truth are afflictions of the young for which college education offers little aid. I am not among those who regret the departure of God from the academy. I join the atheists in their skepticism about scientific proof of the existence of God or of any meaningful argument for God's existence that is not subject to scientific verification. Yet I regret the extent to which God took with him, when he left the classroom, questions of values and morals and purposes with which young people struggle today as they always have. As much as ever, a good education owes students guidance on examining their own lives." (pages 8-9)

And so it is that The Veritas Forum - in its events and its publications - seeks to fill the vacuum of reasonable discourse on issues of faith that was created when God was summarily expelled from much of the realm of academia - its campuses and classrooms. I found the tone of the essays and conversations offered in this book to be refreshing. These are respectful and civil conversations - not those of zealots screaming at one another across a vast chasm of divergent beliefs and contradictory cosmologies. Instead, respected and learned scholars such as Os Guiness, Richard John Neuhaus, Tim Keller, Francis Collins, Mary Polin, Ron Sider, et al. offer their carefully reasoned arguments for embracing faith or rejecting it. The subtitle of the book lets us know exactly what to expect to find between the covers: "Leading Thinkers Explore Life's Hardest Questions."

This is exactly the kind of book which I will stockpile on my book shelf and give to those I meet who are open to thinking deeply and critically about issues of faith. We owe Kelly Monroe Kullberg, Dallas Willard, Dan Cho and Sarah Park a debt of gratitude for gleaning from the best thinkers their thoughts on these critical issues such as Truth, Faith and Science, Atheism, Meaning and Humanity, Christian Worldview and Social Justice.

Whether you are someone in the early stages of wrestling with these issues or you are further along the road and still refining your thoughts and beliefs, you will find great value in this book.

Enjoy.

Al

Collection of thoughts and ideas from Veritas Forum
By Justin Lai
"A Place for Truth" is a remarkably compelling and coherent collection of chapters based on The Veritas Forum events on university campuses for the past 15 years. As one who has attended many Veritas Forum events, I appreciated reading this book.

Collections like this are usually cobbled together and suffer from a lack of cohesion, but this volume is different. Reading through it, one has a real sense of moving through some of the big questions facing our society today. Moreover, the context for each chapter reminds us that these are not just abstract, theoretical questions, but ones that real people have grappled with on these campuses. Also, the introduction from Dallas Willard frames the book beautifully. I highly recommend this for anyone involved with the university, or just anyone interested in the implications of ideas.

This is the definitive gaff rig text.
By Michael Field, of Wooden Boat Fittings
If you're only buying one book on gaff rig, this should be it. Full of useful information, supported with many practical diagrams (not all of them original,) it is a first-class resource for anyone contemplating building a gaffer, or converting from a different rig.
Note that this book is described by the publisher as an "extended" 3rd edition of the book originally published in two editions under the title "Gaff Rig". I am not clear how much additional information has been included in this new edition, but the change in title indicates that there might be considerable differences between this "Handbook" and the two earlier "Gaff Rigs."

The Best Resource on the Gaff Rig
By Frank S. Hagan
Leather's book is probably the best resource on the Gaff Rig that I have seen yet. Great text, clear illustrations, and quite a bit of information not found elsewhere makes this my favorite of the books I've reviewed. While Leather is a Brit, he does have quite a bit of info on American gaffers as well, including a chapter on the fishing schooners of New England. Each major component of the gaff rig is treated with a chapter (Mast and Spars, Running Rigging, Standing Rigging, etc.) and then adaptations for several specific types of boats (catboats, sloops, cutters, smacks, yawls, schooners, etc.)

From the Inside Flap

The Art of Startup Fundraising is the groundbreaking book that offers a step-by-step guide to today's way of raising money for startups. Written by acclaimed entrepreneur Alejandro Cremades, the book includes the tools, strategies, and approaches needed to empower entrepreneurs, from formation to financing.

The author reveals the secrets behind the art of raising capital and shows how every ingredient in the process needs to be perfectly balanced in order to secure the needed capital. The book details the milestones to be achieved while launching, nurturing, and growing a startup and lists the important markers investors want and expect.

Recent regulations—most notably the JOBS Act—are making the old go-to advice less relevant, as startup money is increasingly moving online. The Art of Startup Fundraising helps entrepreneurs develop a clear business strategy based on the new realities surrounding today's financial landscape. Cremades shows how to best organize a corporate structure, enlist experienced and talented managers, and align a winning team that will attract investors.

The Art of Startup Fundraising explores the advantages and pitfalls of the various sources of capital from business loans to angel groups and beyond. The author also offers an in-depth discussion of the venture capital game and gives solid advice for identifying and engaging with prospects, as well as developing a realistic concept of how much to ask from investors. He stresses the vital importance of selecting the right investors. Knowing what to look for in an investor and the key questions to ask potential investors—even those who invest the smallest amounts of initial seed money—is vital to success.

Once momentum has been created and the ideal investor shows interest in a business venture, it is time to close the deal. The Art of Startup Fundraising offers invaluable advice for creating a completion schedule that shows all concerned parties when to expect an agreement to become legally binding. However, once a deal is closed the work isn't done. It becomes one more stepping-stone on the startup journey.

No matter if you are the founder of a startup or looking for an exciting investment opportunity, The Art of Startup Fundraising offers the must-have guidance you need.

Is angel investing upside down?
By Henryk A. Kowalczyk
The author preliminarily addresses his book to young people starting their first business ever; hence, he sprinkles it with a lot of basic common-sense business advice. His paternalistic tone can be a little annoying sometimes to readers with some business experience. On the other hand, the author provides comprehensive insight into the fundraising process, with many helpful details, which made reading the book worthwhile.
Obviously, one may ask why the fundraising for a startup became so complicated, and does it have to be this way? Mr. Cremades does not have this kind of seditious thoughts.
The problem is not with founders not dancing properly around angel investors as Mr. Cremades assumes. The problem is with angel investors who do not have perseverance in hunting for the business opportunities before they reach the stage where it is a no-brainer to see it.

FAQs for beginners in the startups world
By Matias Lambert
I recommend this book to all those who are just beginning in the world of startups, regardless of whether they are students or business people. In a few pages, it helps to understand the investor’s vision, to determine the steps to follow and to know what to do and what not to do. With just a few dollars and a few hours of reading, you will be saving time and money you would otherwise spend on consultants, which you will now be able to allocate to your ideas and business. Also, a special mention goes to Bárbara Corcoran’s foreword – a real gem. I have already printed and put in a frame on my desk the phrase “I knew the secret to growing a business fast is to never wait until you're ready”. I just hope that investors like this approach to businesses.

Must read for first time start-up founders
By FAV002
As a former corporate VP that’s taken the plunge into the world of co-founding a start-up, I found The Art of Startup Fundraising to be a great overview of the capital raising process. If you haven’t had prior start-up experience, the fundraising process can appear highly daunting and a long road of trial and error if you lack the right game plan. Alejandro has laid out a clear, insightful roadmap for how to successfully travel down the path of fundraising your new venture.
The book covers a lot of ground on key topics such as: why you should raise capital, how to craft your pitch, how to identify and solicit investors, and how to close investment deals. However, the book doesn’t go as deep into some areas that would be beneficial. For example, given that convertible notes are becoming a common method for early stage start-up investment from friends & family and angels, it would be nice to see a more detailed explanation of this approach. Perhaps a pros/cons of raising investment using straight equity financing versus convertible note debt financing (or the new SAFE note approach advocated by Y-Combinator and briefly touched on in the book) would be useful for many here.
I also like that Alejandro gets into the psychology of investing; what gets a lead investor on board first and the group mentality that can follow with momentum of both the business and the investments raised.
Overall the book was a practical and enlightening read and I am using it as the “fundraising handbook” for our start-up. I have tabbed pages with my notes all over the margins that I’m going back to for reference. I also found the book inspirational and motivational – I am now confident that I indeed am capable of getting out there and successfully fundraising for my start-up!
