This book is amazing in what it achieves - a thorough, comprehensive view of expansive, global civilization and its affects on local, indigenous, autonomous peoples around the world. Bodley clearly and succinctly summaries the last two and a half centuries of colonial and imperial expansion, the people who resisted and continue to resist that expansion, and the negative consequences of being incorporated (usually by force) into large, impersonal, irresponsible nation-states. A must read for anyone who wishes to step outside our consumer-frenzied, totalitarian culture of domination and see what other worlds were and are possible.

Crisp, Clear, Insightful, and Vitally Important

This book is the most clear and insightful analysis of the global interactions between large industrial civilizations and small indigenous communities I've yet seen. There is no fuzzy logic or impotent liberal hand-wringing here, just solid information and analysis by a competent scholar in the field of Anthropology. Excellent overview of our global situation, very clear analysis of the processes of history, and fine perspective on contemporary issues.

I would consider this book a must read for any serious student of indigenous peoples, the history of frontier encounters or modern geopolitics as it relates to indigenous peoples. As a person who picked up degrees in History and International Studies before venturing into the field of Anthropology and encountering this book, I would say that Bodley cuts through the ideological orientation an imprecise analysis one tends to see in the writings of historians and political scientists on this subject, and gives the reader a solid understanding of one of the largest and most sweeping trends in history.

A Good Read!

To survive in today's business environment, it's not enough to just keep improving - you have to do it faster than the other guy does. Brian L. Joiner provides valuable direction in how to get better faster. This approach transcends goal-based management by focusing on the needs of the customer. Only then do apparent contradictions between customer service and cost-cutting become manageable again. The author admits that the teachings of management guru W. Edwards Deming heavily influences his advice. We at getAbstract recommend this very helpful work to managers searching for a more enlightened, more effective approach. It will be particularly useful for those who need a strong rationale to do what they already think is right.

Moving from management by objective to the next generation.

A paragraph from the last chapter is an excellent statement of what's covered.
"No executive wants to increase inefficiency and waste, cost and bureaucracy. Yet without a dedication to customers, without an understanding of systems thinking and variation, without an appreciation for cooperation and the use of data, that is unfortunately what we end up doing." (page 255)
You will likely see your company in one of the many examples given by Mr. Joiner. Chapter 9 gives just the right amount of detail in understanding variation and the use of control charts. The remainder of the book helps you understand how "common" and "specific" causes affect a system and how to manage them.

All businesses have costs but waste is optional.

This is an excellent book, with many breakthrough ideas explained in a very compelling way.

I recommend this book for practitioners working with Lean, Systems thinking or general operational improvement, however, if you are into six-sigma you will not understand the profound knowledge this book contains.

There are a many reasons why I like this book, it has some memorable insights and phrases. Such as `don't work on costs, work on the causes of costs'.

Joiner also highlights how most managers manage their business without any theory behind their actions.. `We should be thankful if the action of management is based on theory...'

Joiner relentlessly pushes the notion that organisations must be `understood and managed as a `system', while developing process thinking, making decisions on customer data and understanding the theory of variation'.

He then goes on to say that the typical management response to calls for improvement is to either 1) distort the system or 2) distort the figures instead of improving the system.

Most people in the world of operational improvement will have come across the Deming PDCA (Plan Do Check Act) cycle, Joiner explains and supports this process very well but he adds a significant insight, what he says is, that when starting to make improvements you must start at CHECK, in fact he devotes a whole chapter to this important variation on Deming's PDCA theme. `Performing check is what most organisations fail to do. Check uncovers things we would just as soon not know, it forces us to look at the huge wastes in each of our activities and exposes it all, and the non productive or plain stupid things we have unknowingly been doing for years. It creates the gut level energy to do a better job of taking Action, of Planning and Doing'.

Joiner states that `a fundamental tenant is that nothing happens in a predictable, sustainable way unless you build mechanisms that cause it to happen in a predictable sustained way'

He talks about listening to management conversations for insights into the organisations real intent and focus he says ... `The way top management spends its time and the questions they ask of each other and the rest of the organisation is critical in determining the focus of the organisation.'

The book goes on to explain how to reduce process variation, the sections about how managers respond to variation would be amusing if they were not real, i.e. how managers work on the people instead of working on the system and the injustice that results in addition to the loss in organisational performance.

A good example of system variation resulting in perverse decisions and behaviour is illustrated by an example Joiner uses in telling a real story about a bank teller, who on several occasions got rewarded for her performance and at other times chastised....finally, she was unlucky enough to loose her job. Later, when talking to a friend she said that she never understood why she being praised because she hadn't done anything different and likewise the chastisement. Further conversation revealed that she had been a victim of system variation, the performance factors were attributed to her and not where they should have been that is to the system in which she worked. Essentially she had lost the Variation Lottery. He quotes Dr. Lloyd Nelson `failure to understand variation is the central problem of management'

Joiner also wallops the inappropriate use of standards (accreditation schemes like ISO and BSI) because they are a barrier to improvement and creativity. He argues that standards far from improving the organisation often result in a loss of performance. `They stifle creativity, deflect attention from customers, increase red tape and make work inflexible, while providing only the minimum acceptable outputs'

When it comes to people motivation he states that `to optimise the organisation as a whole, intrinsic motivation works better that rewards and punishment'

Finally he states that in order to get `better results you must have better methods' and he goes on to explain what those methods are.

This is a fine book, with excellent practical ideas as long as you see people as an asset capable of improving their own workplace and not as a cost to be `managed'.

Its very easy to become engrossed in her life story

WOW! Just finished my 2nd read of this heartfelt book. Jody Lynch is a truly remarkable woman. Its very easy to become engrossed in her life story. I love how she always put others first from the victims in her communities to the students in her schools. She ALWAYS had one thing in mind during her career and she shared this throughout her bio with lots of wit, anecdotes and personal true stories. Jody Lynch sounds like a true mentor and hero for all who have fallen victim to even the smallest crime. I hope she comes out with another book to fill this reader in on how she is righting the wrongs of her corner of the world post Lipstick and a Gun!

A First class guide to a very promising new way of building!

This is very well written book - a tribute to English literacy! I found ONE minor typo in the whole book! The treatment is exceptionally thorough. It is very well illustrated. As for the subject matter, I was very impressed by the potential for Hemp-crete. It has the unique property of being both a very high insulator AND having high thermal mass. It overcomes the undoubtedly very high level of chemical poisoning which Western attempts at building have subjected us to. It is also relatively easy to work with, and,as they say. 'carbon negative'. Particularly in extreme climates it will prove to be a wonderful alternative. It is a marriage between Western science and the older tradition that seeks to derive building materials from natural sources (both grow-able and bio-degradable). Furthermore, I suspect that it has the flexibility to be an ideal building tool in earthquake country. It DOES require framing, and it is NOT a total substitute for concrete (in for example foundations), but the qualities I have already described more than compensate.
The only problem... where does one get Hempcrete supplies in the US? I would love to try it, but don't fancy having to drive to Canada for my needs.Anyone interested in forming a would be users' group?
As a final word of advice to the authors - you write and organize information very well. CUT OUT the repetition! The book could loose a third and not suffer. But nevertheless, it is a first rate guide to anyone wishing to use hempcrete

your own personal walking tours of the city

We just returned from Barcelona and used this wonderful guide to explore the city. The book begins with about 20 pages of general introduction to Barcelona and then gives 5 walks, separated by area: El Barri Gottic, Sant Pere and La Ribera, El Raval, Gracia and L'Eixample. Each walk takes about 3 to 4 hours (longer if you stop at recommended restaurants and attractions), and are as good as having a private walking tour. There are lots of interesting little stories about the city, the buildings and the people. We've used many of the books in this series and found BarcelonaWalks not quite as intimate and charming as others, but still very good. Also the book is getting older now so it is less reliable when it comes to restaurants and other venues, but we still enjoyed these walks very much. Each section contains a map (which does not name all the streets, which can be problematic) and a few balck-and-white photographs.

As much as I have enjoyed the other books on Barcelona that I have read, nothing has brought this spectacular city to life in quite the same way as Barcelonawalks. I went on the walks with a native who knows the city so well she can get navigate the labyrinth of the Barri Gotic with her eyes closed. The book was a revelation even to her. George Semler, the author, brings considerable reserves of insight, style and wit to the proceedings. As a book, it's a wonderful confection. As a guidebook (a recipe I don't ordinarily care for since they often do to their subject what the Kraft company does to cheese), it is more like private tour with someone who knows the broad arch of the city's rich history, the character of it's people, as well as a baroque quantity of entertaining minutia. Semler's restaurant recommendations alone might be worth the price of admission, as you are likely to find yourself the only tourist in various characteristic and popular neighborhood eateries.

George Semler has told as much about the passions of the people of Barcelona as about its buildings. From the medieval splendor of the Gothic Quarter through the 19th neighborhood of Gracia to the wildly idiosyncratic buildings of the Catalan Renaissance, each block is revealed not only as a sequence of architectural structures but as the place where the great and the ordinary people of Barcelona fought, dreamed and struggled. I walked every one of its routes with pleasure and a great sense of history. Marvellous!

The Revolt of Islam : A Poem in 12 Cantos has little to do with Islam although is set within the Ottoman Empire but focuses more on revolutionary themes of social reform and anti religious sentiments that were inspired by the French Revolution. It was composed in 1817 and consists of nearly 5,000 lines written in Spenserian stanzas, namely verses of nine lines with 8 of iambic pentameter and the final line in iambic hextameter. The publishers, Charles and James Ollier, refused to print the work without changes to the statements on religion and the dilution of the incest within the poem. Shelley also changed the title and said of the poem that: I felt that it was in many respects a genuine picture of my own mind. I felt that the sentiments were true, not assumed. And in this have I long believed that my power consists; in sympathy and that part of the imagination which relates to sentiment and contemplation.
