Helped me so much!

I stumbled on this book at just the right time. I've been living in my mind (constant daydreaming, fantasing, etc.) since a traumatic event in my childhood. I didn't realize, that as the years went by, it was becoming more frequent and negatively effecting my real life. When relationships ended, to avoid the pain, i kept the relationships going in my head. It's supposed to be a pleasant escape but in REALITY i was letting this fantasy eat away at me. Mrs. Lue helped me see that i have been taking a few good qualities about someone and then letting my fantasy make them into this perfect person. When this "perfect" person rejects me i of course feel worthless. Truth is in reality these people i pine for aren't even worth my affection. Natalie Lue is teaching me how to WAKE UP and see, think and act realistically when it comes to love and loving myself. I recommend this book to everyone. Maybe most people don't dream as much as i do but thanks to Disney and romantic films, i think most of us have a false sense of reality when it comes to love.

For Anyone With an Online Romance

After a couple of abusive relationships, I now have a better understanding of the pitfalls I stumble into. I found this book at just the right time. I was looking for a stable relationship with someone who could love me, help me feel safe and happy. I thought I found that in a person I met through an online game. We texted, emailed and even talked on the phone. After a medical diagnosis, he just disappeared. It broke my heart because I thought we were great friends and now he wouldn't answer my calls, return texts or emails. I didn't understand why he would disappear when I needed a friend the most. With the help of this book, I realize he wasn't the person I was hoping he was. I realize that I can make myself happy with someone that I can meet and someone that is willing to live with me in reality instead of all the "some day's" or "when's". Although it is difficult, with the help and advice in this book, I'm moving on. I know that by the time I feel better physically that I will be much stronger emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

If you find yourself "crushing" on an unavailable person, co-worker or you think you've met the perfect guy online, find yourself selling yourself short while you let someone else use your time to decide what you should do ... this book is for you. It won't be an automatic fix and will require some change inside yourself, after all ... if we aren't' willing to change, we will fall into the same traps and pitfalls.

I know some have commented on the poor spelling and grammar, but if you need the help enough it shouldn't be a bother. I also enjoy well written grammar with correct spelling, but I think fixing me is far more important.

What? Learning is entertaining too?

This is not the dry ethics textbook I remember from my school days; it is a whole new approach with human nature and the power of storytelling in mind. Before readers know it, they're personally involved in the interactive narratives, stories in which they get to make choices and then see the consequences. What a refreshing and entertaining approach! It has been months since I read this text, and I still remember specific actions and conversations between characters in the various stories. Reading and internalizing these scenarios are painless. The whole structure and design of the "The Brewsters" is ergonomics for the brain!

William F. Keegan is Chairman and Curator of Caribbean Anthropology, Department of Natural History, at the Florida Museum of Natural History. He also serves as Associate director for Research and Collections. He holds affiliate appointments as Professor of Anthropology and Curator of Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. He is also affiliate faculty in the College of Natural Resources and the Environment.

easy self-assurance of a successful inventor whose creation, BlackBerry, is as well known in the family room as the boardroom. As he looks out at the shareholders attending the July 2009 annual meeting of Research In Motion (RIM), he knows that he has a room full of happy investors. The market capitalization of the firm ? the number of shares times the per share value ? is $43 billion, making RIM three times bigger than Motorola, a major competitor founded in 1928, more than half a century before RIM’s brave beginnings in 1984 as a two-man shop on borrowed money. Share price has recovered to $75, more than double the levels reached during the global financial crisis that battered all companies six months earlier. At the peak of his powers, Lazaridis is one of thoserare people in business who rightly deserves to be called a genius. “It’s a privilege to work with experts every day,” he said, referring to RIM’s 12,000 employees, including 5,000 in research and development, up from a total of only 100 employees in 1997. “We knew we were building a company for the long term,” he said. “We’re just absolutely obsessed with customer quality, the reliability of the product, and the value we’re providing the carrier, the enterprise, the IT manager, and the user. In fact, Fortune Magazine ranked RIM at the top of its 2009 list of the 100 Fastest Growing Companies in the world and RIM’s ranking at the top of the 2009 “Tech 100” list published by Canadian Business magazine illustrated RIM’s tech titan status in Canada with a market cap that was actually more than double the combined value of the other 99 publicly traded Canadian technology companies on the list. And according to a Millward Brown brand study, the BlackBerry brand value grew 390 per cent in the past year and is now worth $28 billion, ranked as the sixteenth most valuable brand in the world and tenth in North America. In just ten years, the BlackBerry brand grew from cult object to icon status and ranks higher than other household names such as Intel, Amazon, American Express, Disney and Pepsi.

I guess more research was needed, rather than more compliments.

How could a journalist with 30 years experience publish a book in 2010 that completed missed Blackberry's looming crisis?--not even a sniff of it? The last chapter dismisses Apple by basically saying that there is no company, not Microsoft, not Palm, not Apple, that has ever or will ever come close to killing Blackberry. Oops!

Overall, a decent read

I've always been fascinated with RIM; not sure why, it's perhaps due to a perception I have that RIM has depth, both from a technological and business standpoint. I've long stopped reading books that chronicles the rise of companies and have walked right past bookshelves that proclaim the arrival of new giants like Facebook and Twitter, but, RIM, of course, is different and I had to get it.

Now, the book is good and it starts well. It does give an 'inside story' about the company and does a fairly good job of providing an overview of the company right from pre-inception to where it stands towards the end of 2009; it covers the early business approach, the financing aspects and transitioning as a major player with the introduction of BlackBerry. However, towards the end it gets a little light and fluffy, if I may say so. I would have preferred to read more about the technological challenges RIM overcame (there are pieces here and there such as the single mail box problem, Show Low project) and a bit more about how they successfully navigated the market with all those big guys around. Personally I would have preferred the last few chapters compressed into fewer pages; for example, I mean, I wasn't really that interested in knowing all the specific charity contributions of the early team members; so instead of enumerating that it would've been better if something else had taken its place. But, in overall, it does give you a picture about how RIM became what it is today. If you are part of the Black Berry cult you might like it more since there is a lot of emphasis on the personalities.

PS - Einstein's notion of God is a bit different... "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."..."I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings."
I'm not expressing an opinion one way or the other here, but the author has tried to draw a parallel between Mike's faith and Einstein's thoughts about reality

Dean Miles has been a professional location audio operator since 1989. Solid location sound primer.

Overall a good primer on location sound, primarily for video, not film or film like productions. Concentrates on mixer to camera set ups, not so much on dual system recorder based set ups. However I appreciated that info as I have that equipment but have not done much single system location work. Now I feel better prepared. Good boom set up and use technique info and photos. Good info on recording levels based on real world experience. I wish he had a chapter on mixing techniques, I need info on that topic as I rarely mix audio live. Mostly I record ISO's that get mixed in post. There are a few typos but no big deal. It would certainly be better for me if the type font was larger.

Somewhere in the text of this book Dean Miles suggests that if you’ve been hired as the location sound man for a Hollywood movie, you probably don’t need this book, suggesting most of the material is designed for video. A bit less explicitly stated is that this book is aimed at those productions with a large enough crew to have a separate sound man.

The book is technical in nature, although offering suggestions on how to get along with the director and camera man. After suggestions on choosing and preparing the location, the author tells how to use a field mixer, shotgun microphones (including booming) lavalier microphones, wireless systems, and video and DSLR cameras. Miles explains what settings and cabling are best for almost any combination of these items. There is a section on using a field recorder, illustrated with a Zoom H4n (although only as a recorder, and not for its microphones). There are also chapters dealing with the special problems of interviews, and with add-on equipment.

The book is dedicated primarily to recording dialog, without covering either sound design or sound editing. Except for the section on hooking up one or more microphones directly to the camera there is no emphasis on the lone wolf videographer-sound recorder. However, given a careful reading of the book, and the manual that comes with equipment, most of the information is transferable to the solitary shooter.

Throughout the book, there are instructions to watch classes with titles similar to those contained in the book. These are part of a $199 course offered on-line by the author, rather than a free website provided by the publisher. I did not examine these classes, especially since the author’s instruction in the book seemed clear and comprehensive enough for my purposes.

Given the limited goals of the book as to location recording, the book does a good job of explaining such recording.

Gr 1-3-The authors walk young artists through the steps of creating figures and landscapes through nine very simple projects per volume. In Papercraft, ovals, circles, and triangles are layered to make fish, and in Printing, rectangular erasers press paint onto paper to look like city buildings. Details are added with pen. Photographs effectively show what each stage should look like, but there are no action shots: no hands showing crafters how to hold a brush or apply paint to a potato for printing. Materials used are commonplace, with some inventive reuse of household items (such as printing with bubble wrap). These are fine books to hand to budding artist, but the layering technique used so frequently in these volumes may prove frustrating when wet media is involved-watching paint dry is no joke for young crafters.α(c) Copyright 2014. Gr. 3-5. In the first book in the Knights of the Silver Dragon series, two young brothers join forces with a brave girl to discover what has happened to the eldest boy's magic teacher. The setting of this light fantasy is vaguely medieval, but the characters mostly use contemporary American idiom (for example, dad and mom). Although the action is fast and schematically logical, offering few surprises, the intended audience may be new enough to fantasy literature that being able to predict twists and outcomes won't prevent them from enjoying the journey. The book doesn't end with a cliffhanger; that's probably good, as different authors will write future volumes in the series. The black-and-white sketches break up the text but do little to advance either plot or mood. Francisca Goldsmith

Secret of the Spirit Keeper

Secret of the Sprit Keeper by Matt Forbeck is the first book in the series Knights of the Silver Dragon. It is a story about a young thief named Moyra, a wizard's apprentice named Kellach, and his 12 year old brother Driskoll. These three kids travel all over Cruston, Broken Town, and The Dungeons of Doom looking for the Spirit Keeper which someone has used to steel Zedric's soul. They work together to fight evil, try to save their friend and become Knights of the Silver Dragon. But can they get back to save their friend in time?

I loved this book. It is filled with suspense, action, comedy and a few twists. It is one of my favorite books. It is really fun to read about all of the characters and their fun personalities! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series Riddle in the Stone written by Ree Soebee.

This is the first in a series fantasy novels for young readers ages 8-12. Separate authors write the books, and it will be interesting to see how the characters vary.

The first tale, Secret of the Spiritkeeper, is set in the village of Curston. Fourteen-year-old

Kellach is studying under the great wizard Zendric. He's not a bad apprentice, but lacks

confidence and the attention span needed. Also, Kellach is still so new to the world of wizardy

that he only knows a few baby spells, nothing that could get him into any trouble. Well, not

much anyway.

Kellach and his 12-year-old brother Driskoll are on their way home when they meet their good

friend Moyra. A band of half-orc is chasing Moyra. Kellach performs a little magic and

distracts the lead half-orc, Kruncher. Luckily for all three of them, they are out past curfew (a

time when not a soul travel the Curston street if they want to see daylight) and wind up in front

of Curston's magistrate, Lexos, who lets them off with a warning.

On the way to school the next morning, Kellach and Driskoll discover the body of the great

wizard Zendric. His body is there, but the Kellach notices that the globe he has been warned

against has disappeared. And inside the globe is Zendric's spirit. Kellach knows that if he, they,

can find the globe in time that they can return Zendric's soul and thereby restore Curston's most-

respected wizard.

What follows is the adventure the threesome has as they begin their search. Like their heroes, the

Knights of the Silver Dragon (an order long decimated during the Sundering of the Seal) the

little band they overcome many obstacles, acting brave when they much rather be at home

studying in front of the fire. Along the way they travel outside the city into the ruins of the old

city that meet with fortune hunters, enter the old city and climb into the Dungeons of Doom

where they meet such creatures as an owlbear, goblins and the goblin-king and zombies.

It's a rip-roaring tale that is sure to delight anyone who reads it. Secret of the Spiritkeeper

reminded me a little of Harry Potter. And although I'm probably the only person on the planet

who doesn't like Harry, I did get a kick out of Kellach, Driskoll, and Moyra. They were more

human and seemed more age appropriate.

Secret of the Spiritkeeper is a self-contained novel that doesn't require a commitment to the other

three novels in the series to enjoy this one. In fact, that's probably the biggest drawback of this

book. There's no need to read further. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if the little

band can reconstruct a real Knight of the Silver Dragon origination.

THE START OF A WONDERFUL NEW SERIES

Wizards of the Coast is best known as the makers of the enormously popular "Magic: The Gathering" collectible card game, "Dungeons & Dragons" role-playing game, and their related lines of fiction and home to top fantasy authors R.A. Salvatore and Margaret Weis. In 2004, however, Wizards decided to move into the realm of juvenile and teen fiction with the announcement of their Mirrorstone imprint. For the first two series under the Mirrorstone banner, they decided to stick with two subjects that they know very well: Dragonlance and Dungeons & Dragons.

Knights of the Silver Dragon is a Dungeons and Dragons series aimed at readers 8 - 12 years in age. The stories center upon the exploits of three young heroes in the town of Curston. Kellach, is a teenaged apprentice to the town's most powerful wizard, Zendric. Kellach's brother, Driskoll, is an adventurous 12 year old who dreams of becoming a great warrior like his father Torin, the captain of the Curston's town watch. The brothers are joined by their friend Moyra, a young female thief and daughter to one of Curston's most well known thieves, Breddo.

In the first book, "Secret of the Spiritkeeper", Kellach is joined by Driskoll as he goes to Zendric's tower for his daily lesson in the art of wizardry. However when they approach the tower they find the door wide open, highly unusual for Zendric. When they enter, Kellach finds his mentor lying on the floor, apparently dead. The tower has been ransacked and it appears that Zendric was the victim of thieves but Kellach finds that the only item that is missing is a strange, glowing orb that Zendric kept upon his mantle. Soon, the boys father, Torin, shows up with several watchers to investigate and sends the boys home immediately. Kellach believes that the orb has something to do with Zendric's death and believes that he can be restored to life if they find it.

After sneaking into the city prison to speak to Moyra's father, they find out that it was a half-orc street thug who stole the orb. They track him down but find that he has already sold the orb to a group of adventurers who have left town. They are headed to the Dungeons of Doom, whose denizens have troubled the people of Curston for many years and is the reason that people are not permitted to leave their homes after dark. Torin is furious with his boys when he finds out what they've been up to and forbids them to leave the house, but Kellach knows that they are Zendric's only hope, so they sneak out of house to save him. Now the three friends must enter the depths of those dangerous, trap-filled, underground passages, facing terrible creatures in order to find the magical orb that will hopefully restore Zendric to life.

Reading "Secret of the Spiritkeeper" takes me back to the earliest days of when I first played Dungeons & Dragons back in the late 1970's. In fact the adventure that these three companions went on was not unlike many of the early, low-level adventures that thrilled my friends and me when we first discovered the game. The story has that strong feel of playing one of those old modules from the TSR days, with a mysterious town, threatened by monsters, and the always present underground dungeon that was the ultimate goal of players. The book closely follows the spirit and rules of the game as Kellach carries the various components in his robes to cast his spells, and Moyra stealthily uses her thievery skills to pick locks and find traps. It is a fantasy story, but one squarely set in the strong foundation of the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

Author Matt Forbeck and the editors did a wonderful job of capturing the feel of the game in this well-plotted and action-oriented story. The three main characters are all well-developed and have the same motivations and fears that kids reading the story have, making them easy to identify with. The frosting on the cake is gorgeous cover and interior illustrations by Emily Fiegenshuh which have a distinct, although subtle, Japanese Anime influence to them. Again, Kudos to Wizards of the Coast for sticking to what they know kids are interested in today. Each of the books in the series check in right around 180 pages with short chapters that average 6 - 10 pages in length. This is very important as it's much more fulfilling to put a book down for the night at the end of a chapter rather than in the middle. Short chapters make it more motivating to read, especially for younger children.

Kids love fantasy so it's no surprise that so many of the top-selling juvenile and teen books today are fantasy-oriented. They provide a sense of wonder, imagination and adventure. "Secret of the Spiritkeeper" is a wonderful start to what should be a thrilling series of adventures that will not only get kids interested in fantasy, but also the Dungeons & Dragons game as well. Those people at Wizards of the Coast are pretty clever.

The Hydraulic Control Systems is a book that every engineer practicing hydraulics should read, or consult, as reference material.
It is detailed in valves used as controls for the hydraulic systems, defining each type very accurately and in deeper detail thus helping you make the right equipment choices when you want to achieve more with less, and time is the first constraint.
If the systems you are analyzing are more into the (electronic) feed-back loops, you should be consulting other publications.
For pure hydraulics, where you apply pilot pressure type signals, and you want valve metering functions, this is the book to study; without going into the refined choices and details of spool metering profiles, for spool type valves having several spools ex 5 or 7).
I regret I couldn't find a book equally good on gear pumps.

Good for mathematical modeling of hydraulic components

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to model the individual COMPONENTS that make up hydraulic power-circuits. Great detail is paid to the description and mathematical representation of their dynamic behavior. Dynamic SYSTEMS are also addressed, but to a much lesser degree. Standard control theory approaches are used, like block diagrams, frequency response methods, and various stability methods (the book assumes that the reader is already familiar with these).

While nonlinear effects are discussed, the book does not well-address the dynamic analysis of complete nonlinear systems. However, there is a good reason for this. Despite the 2001 date-of-publication listed by Wiley (on AMAZON), this "new" book was in fact published in 1967 (the current edition is simply a re-release). This pre-dates the ready availability of computers and advanced simulation software that now make feasible the simulations of complex systems. Personally, I don't find this to be a problem, since there are plenty of other books that deal with the subject of solving nonlinear dynamic systems. What Merritt's book does very well is enable one to model the systems that must be solved. The level of detail provided is rare in my experience, so his book is extremely useful - perhaps even more than it was in 1967.

Finally, I wish Wiley would just own up to the fact that it is republishing an older work. To imply that a scientific work was written decades later is dishonest. In spite of this, I still recommend the book by Merritt - but only if you can find a good used copy for a decent price. Wiley's $200+ price tag for the "new" edition is inappropriate.
