Hysteria in the Kitchen

The above reviewer nailed the plot, so I won't go into that. Gina is someone a lot of women can relate to (bad hair day, Martian men), and Tate is the ultimate good ol' boy who really does ooze charm AND can cook well. Their bantering sparkles like champagne, but these two are totally authentic Southerners, including Gina's family. YES, her mama does call about every day, and you can still find her type in every small Georgia town. As a lagniappe, there are three (fairly simple) recipes at the end - what do you expect from a story about two people fighting to get on The Cooking Channel.
Those who love Dorothea Frank and Anne Siddons will flat-out love this one. Mary Kay Andrews just has Frank's knack for capturing the rhythm of the South and spinning it into a laugh-aloud, recognize- yourself tale. She's about as addictive as Co'cola and Moonpies:)

Not her best

I should preface this by saying that I adore Mary Kay Andrews/ Kathy Hogan Trocheck (same author writing under two different names). Normally I find her books really entertaining, and they're among my favorites, so I pre-ordered this one.

Unfortunately, the cast of characters just left me flat in this one. The usual zippy dialogue and entertaining scenarios never materialized. Maybe if it had been from another author I didn't like so much this wouldn't have mattered, but I have such high expectations for her books that I found this one a big disappointment. It's definitely not on a par with her Savannah books or Hissy Fit. Get this one from the library, and save your pennies for the next Mary Kay!

I too am a fan of Mary Kay Andrews, I too pre-ordered Deep Dish... I couldn't even finish the book, it was that boring. I gave it to a friend (who also loves Ms. Andrews' books) and she couldn't get through it either.
At first I thought well, maybe I'm just disappointed because these are new characters but no, it was just a boring book.
Before you buy this book, read excerpts, it is NOT Ms. Andrews usual fare.

artist--from painters to poets. The author is living it, and is willing to
put his soul on the line for the reader to examine and learn.

This book will also intrigue anyone with an interest in the arts, from

Not just for artists.

Eden Maxwell's beautifully written book, An Artist Empowered, is a must-have text for not only artists, but anyone interested in creating from the soul. For many of us who consider ourselves 'creators', the doing is reward enough. But if we're good enough, true enough, robust enough, monetary reward can follow because the integrity in our work is recognised, appreciated and desired. Honesty and belief in who we are and what we do must prevail, and this is what this book encourages.

Eden's 'dharma' - his 'reason for being here' - is a strong theme within the book and it is empowering to be swept up by his self-belief, a state that all artists must surely attain if they are to produce works from the soul. Anecdotes from Eden's life pepper the pages, giving a personal touch to what is essentially a reference book. We really get to know Eden as a person and, through the black and white similes of his artwork, an artist.

The layout of the book is appealing. Sidebars contain poignant and relevant quotes, many from Eden himself; bold section headings act as grab lines, allowing the reader in scan-mode to to be caught in mid flight; a comprehensive index makes for quick and easy searching.

A modern, comprehensive guide

This is a very good book for an intermediate leisure sailor or a beginner racer.
All the topics are covered, from the purchase of an used boat, to a small brief about tactics and strategies, but sailing techniques are the core: therefore both a leisure sailor and a racer will beneft reading the book. There are lot of pictures and both photos and ilustrations are well done.

If you are a real newbie to sailing, you'll need to learn the basics somewhere else (possibly with a course), but you only have a vague idea of sailing and its terminology, you'll find everything you need to become a good laser sailor. I read this book several times, each time I tried to apply a topic or a hint on the water and every time I understood something more. I think that even an experienced sailor (read: over 30), could find something useful. I'm sure that if you want to win a race you must know (and be able to apply on the water) almost every page: a good sailor could use the book as a sort of check-list.
I race at local level and my results improved: thank you Paul!

With a wider coverage of starting techniques and strategy I'd have rated it five star. Probably the guys at RYA want to sell another book about these two topics ;-)

One of the top books to get for Laser racing

Excellent book by an Olympic gold medalist that will help you advance your Laser sailing no matter what your skill level.

In my case, this book was useful even though I had lots of time in Lasers: when I bought this I already had sailed in a number of Laser nationals and one worlds, placing first in one Nationals and 15th in Worlds. Plus plenty of regional regattas and clinics. However, my Laser experience was all in the 80s and 90s and was very dated. For instance, we didn't zigzag downwind back then like sailors do today.

When I got back into the Laser for Masters sailing, I got this book, re-reading it several times. It helped a ton in terms of learning the new techniques. The book has a lot of photo sequences, which are invaluable for understanding proper boathandling. It's a good idea to review each photo closely -- often there are implied tips that aren't mentioned in the next itself.

Great Laser specific book!

This book is a great guide for anyone who already knows how to sail, doesn't know the Laser and plans to perform well in races. It is specificly about the Laser. I read many (if not all) Laser specific books and this one is -by far- the best available nowadays. Many of the other Laser guides are outdated due to new techniques, new equipment and new class rules.

It is well organized and sophisticated in everything Laser specific, from buying and rigging the boat to sailing trim and techniques. The paper, colors and print quality are very good. There are lots of excelent pictures clarifying the details, of which there are A LOT more than one would expect in a boat that was meant to be as simple as possible.

Complement with a dinghy sailing tactics manual, learn about wind and waves and you are ready to train seriously!

About the Author
Hannah Hurnard (1905-1990) is a twentieth century Christian author, best known for her allegory Hinds' Feet on High Places. Hurnard was born in 1905 in Colchester, England to Quaker parents. She graduated from Ridgelands Bible College of Great Britain in 1926. In 1932 she became an independent missionary, moving to Haifa, Israel. Her work in Israel lasted 50 years, although she would later maintain a home in England as well. Hurnard's early writings (especially Hinds' Feet on High Places and the sequel Mountain of Spices) were embraced by the mainstream Christian community, but later on in her life she seems to have departed from orthodoxy. Eagles' Wings to the Higher Places has been said to support non-orthodox beliefs in pantheism, universalism, and gnosticism. Unveiled Glory tells of how she came to believe in Universal reconciliation.

A powerful read, but be forewarned!

This book was a huge blessing to me. God used it to really encourage my walk at the season I am in right now. It was a powerful and timely read for me, and confirmed things in my individual life that I sense God doing.
Being so encouraged by it and encouraging other Christians to read it, I was very sad and disappointed to learn that after the writing of HFOHP,the author, Hannah Hurnard fell into new age, occultism, reincarnation, etc. Her "doctrine" became a very flawed and inaccurate one and very different from the True doctrine of God's Word, the Bible. So, I wanted to give a warning to all Christians to enjoy HFOHP (perhaps even "Mountain of Spices" is okay. I've not read it yet.), but to stay away from her other writtings, as they are tainted with new age false doctrine. I feel her views were still pure at the point in which she wrote HFOHP, but not long after, she hit a downward spiral. So, just be careful and be forewarned.

LIFE CHANGING

Young or old, man or woman, this book is sure to minister to your heart! You will read about a Much-Afraid as she makes her journey to the High Places. A fascinating allegory of a personal relationship with Jesus and the sacrifices of trust, obedience and resistance of temptation as we ourselves journey with the Master. An allegory of how the most terrible enemies, like Craven Fear, Bitterness, Resentment and Self-Pity speak into our lives their detestable lies. This is a very eye-opening book that will help you understand how all things work for the good of those who love the Lord. Even if you are not a Christian, this book will touch the fibers of your heart as well. You should not walk away from reading this book!

I read this book when I was a teenager over 20 years ago. It changed my life and set me on my own journey. I have reflected on the book many times in my life. A wonderful impact on a broken lonely girl.

Great content, let down by Kindle format

The content, of course, is not at issue here - that this is an excellent text regarding wound management & reconstruction goes without saying.

The issue is the format: the Kindle edition proves remarkably cumbersome to navigate, as this format is really geared to sequentially working one's way through a book, as one would a novel. When it comes to looking for a specific item, life becomes difficult, as the Table of Contents is not clearly organised, and there doesn't seem to be any specific 'Search' field for looking something up. There is an Index, but this is simply a list of words, without associated page or location numbers.

Another problem is that the illustrations (a key part of any surgical text) are a little on the small side.

I should point out that I am accessing this work via Kindle software running on an 8 inch Android tablet. One's mileage may vary on another device (eg iPad or desktop PC, or an actual Kindle device).
