Great, accessible guide to non-profit fundraising

Raising money for your organization can be hard and often intimidating. Many organizations will hire a full time development director to do it, but smaller organizations that really need funds can't always afford it, and, ironically probably have more of a need for expert fundraising. This is a great starter guide for new board members and others charged with fundraising.

Experienced fundraisers looking for tips or secrets will find this book too basic. This book is a broad overview of small org non-profit fundraising and defines the basics such as "prospect", "ask" and "donor". Missing from the book are nitty gritty details and direct examples but that's ok. The target audience of the book is someone who doesn't know where to start and probably terrified of asking someone for money on behalf of another entity. This is for a novice who doesn't even know where to begin to start asking questions.

This book empowers the reader to engage other members of their organization to ask details tactical questions about how they should approach donors, how to keep donors active, and ultimately how to keep the organization alive. Even if someone's job in the organization isn't fundraising, this book explains the importance of it and how it's not just the job of the donor or development staff to raise money, but rather everyone's job to be part of the process.

A great starter guide written in language accessible to anyone, not just fundraising pros.

We;ve been reading this at our staff meetings for the non-profit that I work at. As the office manager its been great to see what we need to be on the look out for and to know how to talk to donors better. For the price the information is invaluable

Poorly written and difficult to comprehend

My classmates and professor all agree that this book is horribly written and incredibly difficult for a non-expert to sift through and comprehend. The authors contradict each other continually and the specific ideas in the book are not well explained. I cannot imagine that there is not another text out there on the subject that is more well-written.

Dont buy it!

To add the chorus of negative views on this very bad textbook would probably be redundant, but I advise other readers not to buy it even if it's required for a class. It is a completely obfuscating and redundant text. You'd actually be better off not reading it and getting the information somewhere else where you can achieve an understanding of the subject matter, because you won't get it here. This book seems to be made with two ideas in mind: a) make it as long as possible, so it can be as thick and expensive as possible and b) make simple concepts difficult to understand thereby forcing students to buy it to understand it. So Don't be fooled!

I don't understand why any professor in their right mind would select such a terrible book for their students. I do not agree with the reviewer who said its easy enough for the college level. If I could give it a negative score I would. The terminology is extremely technical and math focused.
