Echoes of “The Soul of a New Machine”

If you want a history of two California tech businesses, Triconex and Wonderware, this book is for you. If you want a loose history of the world from 1983 to 2013, as it affected these two businesses, you will find some unique and interesting tidbits in The History of a Safer World by Gary L Wilkinson. The book also has a big appeal to the thousands of people involved with these two companies… as employees, vendors, investors, or customers.

Author Gary Wilkinson overcomes the normally boring history of business beginnings by offering up first-person interview material, insights and background of some of the principle players. He also includes some delightful historical perspectives to enliven what, for most readers, would otherwise be material about as interesting as a financial audit. The initial release I read was still peppered with some spelling, grammatical, and layout problems (IMHO), though the book is an obvious labor of love. Errors aside, Mr. Wilkinson offers the reader more than a few insights on the entrepreneurial spirit, grasping emerging technologies, and a glimpse into the California Dream.

If you want to take a short time machine trip and visit the early technology dot com world when it was REALLY rocking, this is the book for you.

Written by an insider with interviews and anecdotes from the original garage team and the subsequent golden first two dozen employees, Gary Wilkinson brings insight to the sheer passion and energy that a startup entails.

The sky was wide open back then, and Windows was poised to change the world. A small team of visionary, but frustrated, engineers set out to take over the world, at least the worlds of industrial process control HMI and the safety-paranoid world of nuclear power and critical process industries.

And they do. From garage gang to millionaires and their product did indeed change the world.
Wonderware was a lion that roared. Spending money they didn't have, they put on a front of success that was contagious and irrefutable. Their parties were legendary in the industry. Their technology was the terror of the big league competition, stuck decades in the past. They were a scrapy sandlot team who walked into the World Series uninvited and then pinned the Yankees to the wall.

Then, at the peak of their success, those pesky venture capitalists and stock holders get in the way and essentially eliminated the team who made it happen, to be replaced by more conventional corporately acceptable suits.

But hey, they all got rich, and those stories of post-startup fun, decompression, and the hedonism that instant wealth can bring are here too.

Mr. Gary Wilkinson, old furniture of a great character at Triconex walks the reader through the challenges a start up business faces and the creative techniques to over come the financial and marketing crevices.

Gary documented the contribution of galaxy of high tech wizards and financial Gurus who kept Tricon breathing when there were no takers.

Mr. Gary Huffton, chief architect of Tricon PLC introduced TMR technology to the industrial world. Not an easy task. Gary was ahead of his time. But there were no takers.

Riding on the blood of thousands of poor Indians who perished in Bhopal, Triconex's fortunes changed. Bhopal catastrophe catapulted Tricon most sought after functional safety black box today.

It is remarkable that Gary's integrity in dealing with EXXON won the first customer.

Great Help for continuing to work on LSE Recovery

This workbook brought up many emotions and remembrances from my childhood that helped me to understand how my low self-esteem was formed. Working through it also enabled me to more closely see the ways in which my thinking controls my feelings and how often my thinking is distorted because of the negative feelings I have about myself. It was tough to work through but very rewarding.

Great self discovery guide!

I enjoy the combination of informative reading about low self esteem & the exercises of going through my childhood. It allows
me to address my feelings about the people, incidents & other
areas of my childhood, adolescence & teen years.
Through 2 stories in the workbook, it asks what were the negative
reactions to the situation, then asks how a person with healthy
self esteem would respond to these situations. These exercises
illustrated how to change your feelings to a situation that has
been uncomfortable before.
Following the order in the workbook, I enjoyed the variety of
going through the "obstacles", then reading a chapter of "Breaking the Chains of Low Self Esteem", then going back to the
obstacle exercises in the workbook. It seems like an adventure
and I look forward to moving on to the next one!

I'm so delighted to come across a book that really diagnose my long life problem I've been suffering . I was astonished when I realized that this book is describing almost exactly what is going inside of me as if the writer was sitting within me monitoring and recording every feelings , thought and behavior I came across.I think this book is writen by a professional who understands ,feels and cares about people suffering from LSE and trying honestly to help them recover.

He is the author of several publications and patents in the field of high dynamic range imaging, automotive on-board imaging and image processing applications, and image sensor test and characterization. He represents Aphesa at SPIE and EMVA1288 and has been an SPIE instructor since 2009.

Aphesa is a young, privately owned company founded in 2008, specializing in image sensor consulting, high dynamic range imaging, as well as image sensor and camera characterization, design, and benchmarking. Aphesa is one of the technical contributors to the EMVA1288 (European Machine Vision Association) standard for characterization of machine vision sensors and cameras, and characterization data reporting.

Such a fun book of vintage ads

Such a fun book of vintage ads. People will love thumbing through it--lots of nostalgia and laughs! I do wish it was much bigger--it's only 5.5x8", which is great for a small end table, but not what I was expecting from a "coffee table" book.

Small, Heavy, But Great Content

Just to add to the other reviews, this book clocks in at over 700 pages and three pounds yet is a smaller format book. The content, though, is superb and seemingly exhaustive--it would have benefitted from a larger size but at that point would probably be an eight or nine pound book! Thoughtfully, Taschen included a page-marking ribbon as part of the book's design--a welcome addition that aids in day-to-day browsing.

It's as if I've paid for a marketing brochure

I've written another review for this (e)book directly from my Kindle but apparently it didn't came through as it's nowhere to be found.

I gave the book a 2 star review because I can't believe the amount on hype around it nor the large amount of 5 stars (which were basically the main reason I've bought the book).

Regarding the actual content, the 'novel' thing would be that it's almost a collection of blog posts. So if you don't want to read too much, you have some nice bite-size wisdom. The information isn't mind-blowing though and if you've read one of the many sites/blogs on the internet about entrepreneurship, you'll find there is little 'fresh' information in there.

But the most annoying thing about the book is that it's almost a marketing brochure about TechStars. They don't miss *a single chance* to tell you again that it's TechStars we are talking about and that person A worked with them, for them, was funded by them, etc. So, usually at the beginning and the end you have some TechStars 'commercials' paragraphs and if possible in the middle too. Now, if you read what I've said above that the articles are quite short, it means that if you try to read more of the book, you'll be bombarded by TechStars advertisement every few minutes (I haven't actually counted how much it takes to read one article, but it isn't that much).

So, I would have preferred much more if the book would have focused on the content, which is decent, instead of trying so hard to sell TechStars.

I wish one could ask a refund on ebooks (it seems to be possible now that I've googled it, but on the Kindle interface I couldn't do it) because this continuous TechStars ad was so distracting while reading that I could have stopped after the first articles. Anyhow, now it's too late as it's been over a month since I got the book...

Essentially it's a collection of blog posts, none of which you couldn't find online. If you like having your biz blogs printed out, this might save you the cost of the ink. There is little actionable knowledge here. It's fine inspiration, but I don't need to pay $30 bucks to get that.

I read a lot. I used to be a programmer. From 2000 til 2004 I worked the web.
I have MBA's in Economics and International Finance.
This book, I could highlight a sentence a chapter to get the gist of what it's saying.
It's an elaborate advertisement.
A pat on the back book.
A yearbook of entertainment to whoever wrote it and whoever participated in the program.
I bought this book because my uncle said it was great.
I have a library of over 800 books; None of them have to be great if I get one good idea.
This book, I didn't even get that.
I have never written a book review.
This is my first.
First time I felt like I really should.
This book is like business 101.
It doesn't really tell you how to do anything.
This hasn't any more content then an inviting cover.

Fall into Cooking Featured Recipe from Pam Corbin's The River Cottage Preserves Handbook: Apple Lemon Curd

Fruit curds are so simple and quick to make. Quintessential and quite the doyenne of the curd clan, lemon curd is unquestionably the all time favourite of these soft, creamy concoctions but I also love this smooth velvety apple curd. It's a marvelous way to use up windfall apples and so during the autumn I like to prepare a good quantity of apple puree and freeze it in 10 ounce portions. I can then easily knock up a batch when the apple season has long gone. --Pam Corbin

Makes 4 8 ounce jars

Ingredients

1 pound Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
Finely grated zest and juice of 2 unwaxed lemons (you need 7 tablespoons strained juice)
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons beaten eggs (4 or 5 large eggs)

Put the chopped apples into a pan with 7 tablespoons of water and the lemon zest. Cook gently until soft and fluffy, then either beat to a purée with a wooden spoon or run through a food mill.

Put the lemon juice, butter, sugar, and apple purée into a double boiler or heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. As soon as the butter has melted and the mixture is hot and glossy, pour in the eggs through a sieve, then whisk with a balloon whisk. If the fruit purée is too hot when the beaten egg is added, the egg will curdle. One way to guard against this is to check the temperature of the purée with a candy thermometer – it should be no higher than 130° to 140°F when the egg is added. If your curd does curdle, take the pan off the heat and whisk vigorously until smooth.

Stir the mixture over low heat, scraping down the sides of the bowl every few minutes, until thick and creamy. This will take 9 to 10 minutes; the temperature should reach 180° to 183°F on a candy thermometer. Immediately pour into warm, sterilized jars and seal. Use within 1 month. Once opened, keep in the fridge.

Variations
To make gooseberry curd, replace the apples with gooseberries. If you’d like a traditional, pure lemon curd, leave out the apples, increase the lemon juice to 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons (4 to 5 lemons) and add the grated zest of 2 or 3 more lemons.

About the Author
PAM CORBIN has been making preserves for as long as she can remember, and for more than twenty years her passion has been her business. Pam and her husband, Hugh, moved to Devon where they bought an old pig farm and converted it into a small jam factory. Preserves Handbooks 1 and 2 - warning

The book itself is fine with some interesting recipies -- HOWEVER -- if you are also considering buying the second book on preserves from River Cottage (ie River Cottage Handbook No 2 - Preserves), please be aware that the content is pretty much identical (ie same recipies, photos and layout). Wish I had known this before I bought both books -- could have saved some money.

Creative Recipes

I have this book for a year now and I have tried many recipes. I like it because it uses a lot of ingredients local to the River Cottage. It is very interesting, but I would not recommend this book for a beginner. The author assumes the reader is familiar with preserving. The canning process does not include water bath processing for the jams. The recipes are still usable but I used Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving (2009 Revision) to determine processing times.

Some great recipes and ideas in this book, really nicely presented in a quality printed, small sized book. The conversion from UK to US measurements seem a little odd for a few recipes though and it would have been nice to have had the UK measurements included.

Still a great book for anyone interested in jams, pickles and anything else that you might want to preserve/can.

About the Author
Chris Lubkemann is the author of four other best-selling whittling books from Fox Chapel Publishing: "The Little Book Of Whittling"", ""Big Book Of Whittle Fun, Whittling Twigs & Branches", and "Tree Craft". I have ALL of Chris' wonderful whittling books, & will buy any more he releases. I've been strictly a pocketknife whittler since 1994, so I'm no "newbie" as you hip, young, whipper snappers so eloquently call it. LOL! I can vouch for the great projects & information you'll get from this, or any of his other books. If you want to truly learn to do old fashioned, REAL whittling, & not what edges somewhere between whittling & traditional woodcarving with the gouges, chisels, etc., then you will never do better than to buy Chris' books. Ok. now where'd I put my Swiss army tinker & that tree branch???. Happy whittlin' all. :)

Filled with dark humor and larger-than-life personalities

Jeff Lindsay gained fame due to the huge success of his Dexter series featuring blood pathologist/serial killer Dexter Morgan, which spawned multiple installments and a terrific TV series on Showtime. Most recently, the literary series came to an end with the ironic title DEXTER IS DEAD.

For Lindsay, before there was ever a Dexter Morgan, there was Billy Knight. His first novel, TROPICAL DEPRESSION, was set in the Florida Keys and featured Knight, a burnt-out former cop. Lindsay now takes advantage of closing the door on one series by reopening the door on a new one.

RED TIDE, like all of Lindsay's work, is set in his home state of Florida. In the Billy Knight novels, the home base is the distinctly original Key West area. Key West is such a wild place that it behaves almost like another character here. To quote from Billy: “There is nothing quite like being in love in Key West. Just walking down Duval Street can make you feel more alive than you have ever felt before, like God loves you more than other people and everything you do will always turn out right.”

Unfortunately for Billy, this sentiment does not hold true. His relationship with his girlfriend, Nancy, is coming to an unsurprising end. Perhaps the fact that he is a shiftless sort who spends his days at a Key West dive bar while she pursues her nursing career provides evidence that this couple was not meant to be. Getting into a bar fight at said bar with Nancy present and ending up in jail probably marked their official end.

While drowning his sorrows on a boat ride with his Australian drinking buddy, Nicky, they turn up something horrific. Parts of a floating dead body are found while they are taking target practice at objects in the water. Immediately, Billy's cop persona takes over and they call this gruesome find into the local authorities. Further investigation points to the fact that the body was of a refugee Haitian immigrant. The question remains what actually happened and if this was an innocent drowning or something far more sinister.

Billy and Nicky, along with a handful of colorful people from both Key West and Miami, assist in a private investigation that points towards a nefarious individual with a deadly background in dark magic and voodoo. Billy and Nicky plan to infiltrate one of the black freighters allegedly filled with refugees. They are also motivated to find the young Russian woman named Anna, to whom Billy has taken quite a liking. She was kidnapped by this evil human trafficker, and they fear the worst for her survival.

RED TIDE pulls no punches and readily goes to the dark side of eccentric Florida. It’s refreshing to see Lindsay return to a series and a character completely different from the Dexter books. The Billy Knight novels are filled with dark humor, larger-than-life personalities, and a nice mix of good, evil and those who exist somewhere in between.

Billy Knight does it again

Billy’s looking for a relaxing off-season in the charter fishing business. Helping a friend move some sail boats, he’s dragged into a murder mystery. Nicky, along for the ride and some beers, is doing some practice shooting with his new gun. What he mistakes for a coconut floating in the distance turns out to be a dead Haitian man.

When local police shrug it off as another drowned refugee, Nicky, like a dog with a bone, worries Billy into digging into the case. It’s more than a dead body. It’s mass murder, and Nicky puts his faith in Billy to dig out the truth, make the lazy officials get involved.

What neither counted on was going up against a bocor, one who delves in dark voodoo magic and zombies.

There’s a lot worse things than drowning on the high seas.

It’s fun to be back with Billy and Nicky. Billy is a bit of an introvert, wanting to be left alone. Nicky, on the other hand, is the comic relief. He’s always operating his enthusiasm at one hundred percent.

Billy is working through a break up with his girlfriend and exploring a new romance with a mysterious girl, Anna, who has her own demons to overcome.

Nicky is his usual wacky self, until the discovery of the body. Now he’s full on rabid, worrying Billy until he agrees to look into the problem.

It’s never a dull moment in Key West.

I enjoy the setting for this series. Living on the Gulf Coast, it feels familiar. The humidity and sudden storms. The lackadaisical attitude and lifestyle of the tropics. And especially the dress code, shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops. I always dread winter when I have to wear layers and put shoes and socks on.

The plot is familiar too. Living so close to the area, the plight of the Haitian refugees is often aired on our local news. I have no doubt what happens in this book happens in real life. Just like the illegal border crossings from Mexico to the US, the coyotes do some similar atrocities.

The fact this can and does happen in real life makes the connection to the story stronger, more engaging. It makes you think, feel the outrage, and empathize with the characters.

This is another thrilling chapter in the series. One I recommend to all thriller fans.

Dark with Lots of Action

Billy Knight, ex-LA cop and now charter boat operator, is trying to enjoy his retirement in Key West Florida despite a recent split from his long-time girlfriend. To try to break him out of his post-breakup funk, his Aussie friend, Nick, convinces him a fishing expedition is just the ticket. However, on the trip, they come across a body. When they contact the Coast Guard, they learn this is an all-too-common occurrence – someone is dumping Haitian refugees in the ocean by the hundreds but no one seems interested to do anything and that includes Billy. But Nicky is determined that someone must do something and that Billy should be that someone. He enlists Anna, a beautiful Russian immigrant who has survived horrors of her own, to persuade Billy and soon the trio are on the trail of a ship called the Black Freighter and its captain who is offering to bring refugees from Haiti to the US for a hefty price and is somehow compelling them to leap to their deaths miles from any shore.

Red Tide is the second in the series by author Jeff Lindsay but the first I’ve read. It is told in the first person by Billy who, despite his best efforts, lives up to his surname – he is protective, romantic, chivalrous and kind to small animals and people but with a penchant for a good bar fight which is kind of the modern-day equivalent of jousting. He also has a great sense of self-deprecation and humour which helps to reduce the tension of some very dark scenes. The rest of the cast including Nick, Anna, and the mysterious Deacon are less well-defined but still likeable. This is a well-plotted novel with plenty of action and suspense and, if you’re a fan of Dexter or thrillers in general, this is definitely one for you.
