About the Author
Roz Russell was born and raised in El Paso, earned a degree in fine arts from the University of Texas, El Paso, and has spent her most of her life in the Southwest. She has been a private investigator, travel agent, realtor, and an artist working in pottery and stained glass. She is a certified ESL teacher and a licensed dog groomer. Russell currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her dogs, Minnie and Coco.

Great Mystery in New Mexico

I was delighted to read this fun book. Like all masterful mysteries, I never saw the end coming. It kept me awake trying to guess "who done it." I hope the writer continues to write about these characters. She has a real talent for the unexpected.

Interesting conjecture based on current facts!

I had the pleasure of hearing Michio Kaku speak at a convention and figured if his books are as thought provoking as his speeches, I should grab one. He does write well but I think the title of this one is a bit misleading. It ranges far beyond physics to a variety of sciences to lay out a timeline of coming advances but most importantly it goes far beyond science to human relationships, economics and trade and personal lifestyle. Probably the most intriguing development to me it the incorporation of computers into a contact lens that is capable of being controlled telepathically and that can perform all the functions that current machines do and more. Pick up a copy in a bookstore or library, read the last section which describes a "day in life" of a person on New Year's day in 2100. If that doesn't pique your interest in knowing how he got there, probably not your type of book, but it was certainly mine!

Fascinating Read

Interesting read by a man who credibly predicts new discoveries or devices already on the horizon and projecting where technology (and life) will lead if things continue as expected. Of course, nobody knows the future. Cataclysms, world nuclear war, etc., could change the future considerably. His book assumes that society and technology continues on its trajectory.

Kaku is a recognized authority connected to many fields of science, so he is not merely an outsider writing a book. He also recognizes the boundaries of our technology. Even in a hundred years, he suggests, we will not have robuts capable of creative thought. We will not travel faster than light, etc.

He may be too optimistic about human nature. While recognizing how some technology can be misused by criminals or hostile governments, his optimistic outlook wants to believe such problems will be solved or their impacts minimal. I am a little skeptical about this.

This is one of those books you cannot put down. Since it is already a few years old, a few of Kaku's predictions have already come to pass, although he did miss the oil glut we are now experiencing.

Definitely an interesting experience. See the world through the eyes of the scientists inventing it today! Although, in a few years some of the items discussed within its pages may become obsolete, there is more that will be relevant for a hundred years. Early on you are bogged down by descriptions, but then you get to the good part. All kinds of different technologies. Its quite exciting to hear about it. I think my only gripe would be is that Michio Kaku did not endeavor to put forth the science towards Psychology and Mental Health, mentioning it occasionally.

I love the Basic Roleplaying system and at one time I ...

I love the Basic Roleplaying system and at one time I was something of a Chaosium fanboy... they published some of my all-time favorite RPGs. So I purchased this with fair amount of good will (despite my reservations about where the company is headed with Call of Cthulhu's 7th edition).
All the more surprising that I'm a bit disappointed with Astounding Adventures.
It's a thin book... not a game unto itself but a supplement that focuses BRP on playing action/adventure tales set in the era of the Pulps, radio shows and matinee serials. It's got a few optional rules, such as Action Points... but most of it sticks close to the core system.
My main quibble is that there's really not much to it.
At two pages the overview of the source material is short and not very wide or deep... I think there are more references to Sky Captain and The Rocketeer than there are actual period heroes such as The Shadow and The Spider. When he brings up radio shows the author makes no mention at all of 'I Love A Mystery'... despite it being a perfect archetype for the sort of adventuring party this book is designed for. There's a timeline section that seems no more RPG-related than what a GM could quickly grab off of Wikipedia. It's all woefully insufficient for anyone not already familiar with the subject matter.
The character creation section is not much more than an abbreviated version of the same process in the core rulebook... with a modicum of thematic advice... but nothing really noteworthy. The option of Action Points is slightly different than the similar option in the corebook... though I'm not sure it fits this theme any better than the original.
There's a longer section of generic characters/NPCs which isn't bad... but doesn't add a whole lot either. To me, in such a thin book, it felt like filler... taking up valuable space. I'd rather have seen the section on gadgets and equipment enlarged... or write-ups of some of the more colorful characters of the era, rather than generic entries like 'scientist' or 'Nazi'.
Most of the last half of the book is taken up by three adventure scenarios... which aren't bad at all... and are probably the main reason to purchase this book.
Really, if Chaosium put out a monthly magazine, and this was one issue of it with a 'Pulp era' theme... I guess I wouldn't mind. But it could have been a lot better. As it is I find myself comparing it to the similarly lackluster 'Atomic Age Cthulhu'... which really missed the boat on covering another era that's ripe for adventure.
If someone wanted to play 'Pulp BRP' I think I'd advise them to pick up Call of Cthulhu instead... drop most/all the Mythos stuff and go read up on the Pulps/Serials/Old Time Radio Shows online. That would better serve the purpose than what Astounding Adventures has to offer.

Oh, I should mention that this book has some very nice art in it... small and B&W but very nicely done.

making Astounding Adventures marginally useful as a game aid

Well written but only partly usable. I'd hoped to use it with Call of Cthulhu, but you need to have the Basic Role Playing book to utilize all the features, and that book is out of print and unavailable, making Astounding Adventures marginally useful as a game aid. Too bad.

Great overview of Persian traditional music

It is with great pleasure that I recommend this book by my old friend Lloyd Miller. He and I performed Persian folk music in Los Angeles in 1988 and I have fond memories of that concert. He was working on his dissertation at that time and it's wonderful to see it published. My only complaint is that it is very difficult to find. No surprise to see that he has done an excellent job of surveying this unique and beautiful tradition, which is so difficult to describe in Western terminology. Some parts of the book are quite technical, and will be rather formidable for beginners. Ethnomusicologists with a special interest in the Middle East will be delighted. Ella Zonis' 1973 tome "Classical Persian Music" might be somewhat easier going for the novice, but it is also tough to locate ... try a good library. Lloyd Miller's book is an indispensible tool and companion for those of us who heve learned to love this music. Bravo!

The author shares his vast knowledge of this esoteric subject. I would have liked to have seen more on the interplay of the 'ghazals' of Hafez as they relate to avaz. The role of the American Peace Corps professional musicians in Iran during the 1960s and 1970s should have been discussed.

Not your typical Stepbrother book

I have been a longtime fan of Selena Kitt's. I like the way she can tiptoe taboo topics without totally turning me off of the book. That being said, I have pretty much stayed away from the "stepbrother" genre for the most part. I'm a rebel and don't like to read "what's popular". There was something about this blurb and cover that screamed read me. I am so glad I did.
The author has outdone herself with this book. That's saying a lot because she is the mistress of reinvention. I am pretty confident in saying that this may be the best book she has written. It has the sexiness of her previous books with a juicy, gripping story. You get hit with a secret towards the end of the book that I personally did not see coming. That's hard to do, I have an unfortunate habit of being able to predict books. Tilley and Beast are my new favorite couple. Beast's grittiness vs Tilly's soft innocence keeps you stuck to the page.

The author did a fantastic job at slowly rolling out the back story so you didn't feel a hitch in the story. It's a pet peeve with me when it feels like the author stops the story with "oh yeah so let's stop and tell what happened 3 years ago". It felt organic and true to the story. I swear the author has been watching my family because I have about 3 of Tilly's mom Liv floating around.
It's a story of loss, lust, innocence, control and some pretty kick butt action. It's not your typical stepbrother book. It's hot, sad and downright sweet at times. The recipe for a perfect book.

Had a great ending

Well, breaking this book down, I can say that I enjoyed some if it. I would've enjoyed more of it if Tilly wouldn't have been such a brat, so naive and ultimately so dense. For the love of God, she was constantly complaining Beast treated her like a spoiled brat, yet she kept averting like one. And the way she let her mother control hey life, OMG grow a backbone for Pete's sake!!! I really liked Beast but Tilly I absolutely loathed, her aunt Meg, and especially her mother. Oh and Frankie wasn't such a good friend if she"noticed" Tully's state of mind and moods, yet was completely clueless and flirted frequently with Beast in front of Tilly. I liked the story, the BDSM Club, Beast and of course Miles, and the fact it has a HEA, but most out the book I wanted to slap Tilly with her own book!

Sweet...Passionate...Thrilling!

I always enjoy Ms. Kitt's books! This one was no exception. Steps rekindle a previous affair, but we as readers find out SO MUCH about their past in the process...definitely a winner. Toward the end the book became predictable but that could be me. Once you've read so many books you begin to see where the author is going with the story line. Several times it appeared the author could have used a better editor. Two verbs in the same sentence, back-to-back!? Someone couldn't decide which verb to use so figured they'd catch at edit...but didn't. Overall a very sweet, but passionate and thrilling read. I highly recommend!
