Great tattoo art/science book

Conflict of interest declaration: I'm on page 223 of this book, so I'm hardly going to give it a bad review, am I? BUT...

In the past I have been severely disappointed by "books of websites". E.g. the Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics website was great fun back when the webmaster was updating it regularly, but the book was badly thrown together and a waste of time for people who've read the website content. Even my favourite webcomics don't have the same sparkle in print. I assumed Science Ink was going to be, like a webcomic compilation, a large thin paperback with not much added value from the editor's online photo album of other people's tattoos which you can find via his blog.

So I was greatly and pleasantly surprised (I think I pre-ordered before the photo of the book was up) to find, on unwrapping this, that it is a beautifully bound hardback with clever cut-outs in the cover that allow colourful photos on the endpapers to tantalise the viewer. The Gothic blackletter used for the word "Ink" on the cover and in the photo headings is a nod to stereotypical tattoo art. The size of this book is a bit larger in the horizontal dimensions but thinner than an average hardback novel, nowhere near as big as a "coffee table" book.

In addition to a normal index, there is also an ingenious "Visual Index" of thumbnail photos so if you can't remember who or what a cool design came from, you can still look for it easily.

Content-wise, I believe there are quite a lot of photos not featured on the website (at least a lot that don't look familiar to me), in addition to all the ones that are online. A lot of the text in this book consists of the tattoo submitters' personal accounts of why they chose their particular designs. However, Zimmer has written mini-essays on the subject of a tattoo where the wearer has not given a long annotation, and his clear and elegant writing also forms chapter introductions. The hilarious Mary Roach (I've read her "Stiff" but have yet to get a hold of the others) provides a short foreword.

In summary, I would recommend this book without reservation to anyone interested in science or tattoos even if I wasn't in it!

A perfect gift for your tattoo-covered friends

I am a scientist but I have no tattoos. In fact, I abhor the idea of permanently marking my body with current interests. I have no bumper stickers on my car. My interests and my passions are kept within me to discuss with those I wish to discuss them. Someday my friends and family members might wake up and wonder what the hell possessed them to litter their bodies with ink - just as I expect all those car owners with Ford/Dole bumper stickers to wonder with regret. OK, you get the picture of my attitude. I love science but question tattoos. Nevertheless, I found this book so interesting that my tattoo views changed.

I purchased two copies for in-laws who love tattoos and are covered in them. These two people are dear to me and I support them in their interests even if I find them odd. What I discovered after reading the book on Christmas eve and Christmas day was that there are some incredibly creative people out there permanently marking themselves with their passions. I loved the intricacies of many pieces. Would I get a tattoo? No. Would I recommend the book to those who love tattoos? Yes. In fact, I would recommend the book to anyone who loves science and art. The book is a work of art.

Well, here is the rub. I might consider getting my social security number tattooed on my foot in barcode just for easy posthumous identification. There you have it! I changed.

When Science and Tattoos Collide

My caveat to this review is that I have a passion for all things science and tattoos, but I'm not an expert in either.

I pre-ordered this book with reservations because there are many"bad" tattoo books out here. And I thought how could these two co-exist together? Aren't scientists sort of nerdy? Aren't people who have tattoos super cool? However, I was knocked out when I received the book, you will see that both co-exist together very well. And lo and behold scientists are very cool or at least have very cool tattoos.

The book comes in a sturdy hard cover edition that has cut-outs on the front to reveal some of the science tattoos pictured in the book. This is a beautiful book that will last years on the coffee table or a favorite spot on your nightstand to explore again and again.

For the tattoo lovers there are plenty of beautiful and wildly different tattoos from the simple symbol of the null set, the intricate mathematical calculation of the set theory, to a rendition of outer space. If you are in need of ideas for a different kind of tattoo this is the book for you. Most of the tattoos are in color and for the most part the pictures are clear, although some of the tattoos are a bit fuzzy, but this could be a result of old and somewhat fading tattoos. There is also a Visual Index in the back of the book so that you can see thumbnails of all the tattoos along with corresponding page numbers so that you can locate the larger photo and read more information.

For the person who likes science there is a wealth of short and concise essays about the meaning of the tattoos pictured, why the person decided to get the particular ink and more background information about the particular science topic. This is really the heart and soul of the book--the passion behind the reason for getting a tattoo is often as interesting as or maybe even more interesting than the actual tattoo. One of the most intriguing pieces in the book (including a picture) is the copy of the oldest tattoo uncovered so far. The tattoo was on a man who was found in the Alps when the snow cover receded and exposed his body. It is the body of the man (nicknamed Otzi) who died 5400 years ago.

The information presented is just the right balance--enough science to whet your appetite, but not enough information to overwhelm most people especially if you are not particularly geared towards science.

As a person who has tattoos, I can identify with the authors regarding the meaning behind a person's reason for getting a certain tattoo. It was refreshing to read about the passion and see the beauty of the tattoos. If I have any criticism of the book is that I wanted more....more pictures, more personal stories and at certain times more of the science behind what the tattoo represented.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in science and/or tattoos.

The decidedly pro-German dictatorship of General Francisco Franco gave them refuge and welcomed other officials and agents from the Third Reich who had escaped and made their way to Iberia. Amid fears of a revival of the Third Reich, Allied intelligence and diplomatic officers developed a repatriation program across Europe to return these individuals to Germany, where occupation authorities could further investigate them. Yet due to Spain's longstanding ideological alliance with Hitler, German infiltration of the Spanish economy and society was extensive, and the Allies could count on minimal Spanish cooperation in this effort.

In Hunting Nazis in Franco's Spain, David Messenger deftly traces the development and execution of the Allied repatriation scheme, providing an analysis of Allied, Spanish, and German expatriate responses. Messenger shows that by April 1946, British and American embassy staff in Madrid had compiled a census of the roughly 10,000 Germans then residing in Spain and had drawn up three lists of 1,677 men and women targeted for repatriation to occupied Germany. While the Spanish government did round up and turn over some Germans to the Allies, many of them were intentionally overlooked in the process. By mid-1947, Franco's regime had forced only 265 people to leave Spain; most Germans managed to evade repatriation by moving from Spain to Argentina or by solidifying their ties to the Franco regime and Span-ish life. By 1948, the program was effectively over.

Drawing on records in American, British, and Spanish archives, this first book-length study in English of the repatriation program tells the story of this dramatic chapter in the history of post--World War II Europe.

Not a Book, but a Time Travel Machine

Every time Robert Moss publishes a new book, I pre-order and devour it cover to cover. Each book sends me in new dreaming directions, and refreshes older dreamwork lessons. This one is no exception, and like his others, I will re-read to garner even more treasures.

This book is not really a book, however, but a Time Travel Machine. Using examples of his own dreams, and that of other dreamers in his circle, Moss teaches us how to connect with our younger selves, and even with past life selves. Unlike many other shamanic practitioners, Moss instructs readers with a plethora of techniques for doing this on our own. We do not need to pay large sums of money to someone else for the experience. Furthermore, he points out that the past is not necessarily linear. Perhaps our "past" lives are instead alternate realities happening right now, concurrently.

On page 148, Moss offers an exercise, to ride a Spirit Horse to the House of Gifts. His stories and instructions reminded me that I used to have a herd of invisible (to others) horses. I managed to put the book down, grab my drum, and head for the fields. Drumming, I called my horses. They came galloping across the field in my internal vision. I claimed one as my own Spirit Horse, and rode off to seek the younger Me who had ridden these horses so long ago. I found her. She did not know what to make of the adult Alice, astride a beautiful horse named Aphrodite, but was willing to join me, on another, Star.

Another day, I again drummed, and rode off in search of an Ice Age self, who had long been on the edges of my awareness. I found him, hungry and alone. I spent time with him in my wide awake dream, and later realized the energy of him had shifted and matured. I expect to be riding my Spirit Horse on many journeys from here on.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which seems to be Moss's most personal to date. I feel like I know him better, as he shares more and more of his own journey to the man he is today. Thank you, Robert.

Dreaming Ourselves Whole Again

Robert Moss has written a number of books on dreaming and I have read and treasured them all. These are some of the best books on dreaming for dreamers that exist. It is clear that he has been exploring the great potentials of dreaming and imagination, tracking the ways in which dreamers can grow and heal not only themselves but their culture and the world at large. For me these books are not only great teachings, but are full of practical things you can do right now to change the path of your life and live a larger, fuller life.

Anyone who follows the dreamer's path, or any other sincere inner work, will likely reach places where healing is needed. Perhaps there is a personal trauma or some event in family history, or even just some vague sense of the loss of energy or vitality. Perhaps we see our own potentials and feel we are falling short and wonder why it happens. For whatever reasons our impulse to heath and growth and reaching our potentials can take us to the place where we need to recover that lost part of our soul and reach for wholeness. That is the subject of this book, and, as suggested, it is full of stories and teachings and practical advice for the one seeking wholeness.

One of the best lessons I have learned from Robert Moss is that working with dreams really is one of the most practical things you can do for yourself. There are many ways to use dreaming for healing, but we can also dream while awake, using the great power of imagination and riding the great magical flow of the world as it plays out the cosmic dramas of life. In your own quest you might find the ideas and exercises in this book useful and practical for dealing with the specifics of healing. My own path has led me into a number of dark corners and places of wounding, but in nearly every instance I have used my dreams, at times with healers open to the power of imagination and intent, to heal both body and soul and to find, as Robert Moss says, "whole soul goodness" and all that implies.

I believe you will find that this book covers the topic of soul loss and soul recovery very broadly and goes into detail on how dreams and imagination can be used to facilitate healing and a return to wholeness. It includes a number of exercises that the reader can do to gauge their inner state and detect parts that are missing, and many exercises for healing and discovery, along with time-tested actions for preparing the ground and ideas for how to coax reluctant parts back home. I find that most people will benefit from these inner journeys and can find things there that will improve their lives in so many ways. Once we get over the need to edit and judge our inner experience while experiencing it directly we can start to harvest the great bounty our inner selves offer us.

I can recommend this book without reservation to dreamers and those seeking healing and wholeness. And I want to highlight two things that I learned here: ask for help when it is needed, and celebrate your healing with joy and delight and fun! For me, that's what this is all about!

Great read on the soul and dreaming!

I had no idea what shamanic dreaming was before I picked up this book by spiritual writer Robert Moss, who has penned a plethora of books on dreaming. For those who are unfamiliar with shamanism, a shaman is a spiritual practitioner who has mastered the art of journeying beyond the body to communicate with spirits, guides the souls of the living and the departed, and brings them healing.

Dreaming The Soul Back Home: Shamanic Dreaming for Healing and Becoming Whole introduces shamanic dreaming, or how to be your own shaman through your dreams. For shamans, a dream is a journey of the soul, a “spirit messenger.” Soul loss can happen when we suffer trauma, bitter disappointment, or violent shock. The soul then may leave the body to escape. Symptoms of this can be low energy or depression. Shamanic dreaming is a way to reclaim our soul.

The author does go through step-by-step instructions on how this can be done, but only a small part of this book is dedicated to this exact practice (there are thirteen levels of shamanic dreaming). The rest focuses on the soul journey and dreaming, including ideas from Carl Jung, the Sufis, poets of the soul like Yeats and Auden, and the power of animal spirits—ravens, owls and horses, to name a few.

Though I found the book to be incongruous in its presentation of the practice of shamanic dreaming, I also found it to be compelling read. My favorite exercises included journeying into your “Soul Tree” (where at its upper branches you can look into the future), “Secret Library” (where you can access any kind of information that interests you), and meeting “The Soul of the Soul,” (a term given by Sufis, otherwise known as your Greater Self).

“Meeting the Soul of the Soul” was my favorite chapter. Moss says this is the friend of the soul that will never lie to us, and will never judge us. It is the Self on a higher level than the ordinary self (thus the capital S!). A strong connection with this Greater Self is pivotal for healthy and peaceful living, and this chapter can show how to foster that bond.

Ultimately, Moss says that the most important knowledge comes through reclaiming what the soul knows (the timeless Sufi poets Rumi and Shams of Tabriz tirelessly repeated this maxim), and that the road to soul recovery is to take a dream and make it a gateway for a personal journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the author’s writing style, which is as lush, fluid and colorful as his ideas. His pages opened my eyes to dreaming and taught me new aspects of the soul. I started having vivid dreams myself, of butterflies, sailboats and killer whales, dreams that guided my days and enriched my nights.

A truely creative one

Mr. MacDonald is a long time prestigous scholar who has been in England
for several years. Then he goes back to the America. The solution manual
of course is not written by the author of the book. But the question is full of wisdom and meaning. Mr. MacDonald's book is a bit harder compared with the book written by John Hull, but it is competitive with the one written by Robert Jarrow. Both of them are creative and intelligent in the field of Derivatives and its application. Mr. MacDonald is tilted to the commodity and Mr. Jarrow is interested in the term structure of interest rates. It is pretty nice book. The solution manual is especially worthwhile for the one who want to knows better the material of chapters inside.

David A. Freedman is Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also taught in Athens, Caracas, Jerusalem, Kuwait, London, Mexico City, and Stanford. He has written several previous books, including a widely used elementary text. He is one of the leading researchers in probability and statistics, with 200 papers in the professional literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2003, he received the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science from the National Academy of Sciences, recognizing his 'profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics'. Freedman has consulted for the Carnegie Commission, the City of San Francisco, and the Federal Reserve, as well as several departments of the US government. He has testified as an expert witness on statistics in law cases that involve employment discrimination, fair loan practices, duplicate signatures on petitions, railroad taxation, ecological inference, flight patterns of golf balls, price scanner errors, sampling techniques, and census adjustment.

Very well-written...very rigorous. Fairly conventional.

This book is a very well-written, but ultimately fairly conventional textbook on linear models in statistics. It offers a very clear elementary introduction to the mathematics of the material, with an emphasis on both applications and rigor. It is to-the-point and does not cover very much material, instead choosing to cover material thoroughly and demonstrate the application of the material in practical situations.

I have heard this book described as "skeptical". It is not unduly skeptical; the author is just being the way every statistician ought to be. Any statistician who is not "skeptical" in this sense is accepting sloppy work.

The writing style in this book is very clear. Freedman is an outstanding writer! The book makes use of a decent amount of linear algebra and other mathematical notation that can be difficult for people to get through, but Freedman provides a very gentle introduction to the notation both through the text and through exercises (broken into small pieces, with a smooth gradient of difficulty). If you take your time and work through the book, you will not find it difficult to read.

Still, this book is not the be-all and end-all of texts on statistical models. It is particularly lacking on philosophical depth when it comes to the mathematical theory. This book describes techniques that are common practice and teaches you how to use them properly and evaluate them critically. It does not probe very deeply into how or why these techniques were developed. It does not encourage the reader to question the techniques themselves or to create new techniques or new theory. In my opinion, this is a shortcoming worth mentioning.

Also, there are a wide variety of topics that this book seems to ignore. By ignore, I not only mean that it does not cover them but that it is written almost as if these subjects do not exist. These subjects include, among others, causal inference, Bayesian statistics, and decision theory. For example, the book accepts squared error loss as a given, and other options, such as mean absolute error loss leading to quantile regression, are not even mentioned. I think the author should at least acknowledge these other perspectives and branches of statistics, briefly discuss how they relate to the material covered in the book, and point the reader to other texts to cover such material.

Is this a good book? I see it on many peoples' shelves. Personally, I found it immensely useful for learning linear regression properly. It is outstanding for self-study and would make a good textbook as well. But it does not stand on its own, even if all one wants to learn is regression. For what it is, this book is simply amazing; know its limitations, however, before buying it.

The Best Statistics Book I've Seen

I spent my life focusing on the errors of statistics and how they sometimes fail us in real life, because of the misinterpretation of what the techniques can do for you. This book is outstanding in the following two aspects: 1) It is of immense clarity, embedding everything in real situations, 2) It uses the real-life situation to critique the statistical model and show you the limit of statistic. For instance, he shows a few anecdotes here and there to illustrate how correlation between two variables might not mean anything causal, or how asymptotic properties may not be relevant in real life.

This is the first statistics book I've seen that cares about presenting statistics as a tool to GET TO THE TRUTH.

NOW i get it

The formal reviews say this book is very well written. That is an understatement. Freedman uses plain English and interesting examples to explain the concepts behind the statistical jargon. This book is certainly good for those who will go on to advanced statistics and those who can read mathematical notation more easily than words. For those of us who need to apply the results of statistical studies but who do not wish to gain graduate degrees in statistics, Freedman gives us the background to understand studies we have to use, an understanding of whether regression is an appropriate model for specific situations, and the tools to ensure we are making appropriate comparisons. This book IS well written because it leads to understanding concepts rather than mechanical memorization.

Starting with a broad overview of what entrepreneurship is, he concludes with an assessment aimed at summing up the strengths and weaknesses of a new enterprise in advance. In between, he provides sound advice on necessary managerial skills; how to form, build, and reward a new venture team; planning and goal-setting; and the pros and cons of family businesses. How do entrepreneurs strategise? Read this book!

In the course of designing and developing an entrepreneurship program for kids, and also expanding further my working knowledge on opportunity creation, I surfed through several online bookstores, including www.amazon.com to scout and pursue good books on entrepreneurship and new venture creation. I perused practically every book review in this genre, and I managed to narrow down my selections to a handful of highly respected authors. Jeffry Timmons is one of them, and I bought practically all the books that have been written by him.
In the case of Jeffrey Timmons, who is internationally renowned for his pioneering research work in new ventures, venture capital, venture financing and entrepreneurship, he is also a well respected academic.
This is my first entrepreneurship book by the author.
This book addresses what makes winning entrepreneurs strategise -think, plan and act - in the marketplace. Although it was written in the late 1980s, it still offers a tremendous wealth of information. It also addresses what they do and avoid doing to get the odds of success in their favour. It also focuses on the founders of new ventures as well as entrepreneurial managers, and provides many interesting answers that help to unlock the mystery - and mythology - of entrepreneurship.
Stretched over 187 pages, this book is really an insightful study of entrepreneurs, be they budding or mature, particularly from the standpoint of opportunity/new venture creation.
I rate this book with only four stars because when I compare it with Rita Gunther McGrath & Ian MacMillan's 'The Entrepreneurial Mindset,' the latter enjoys a much greater edge, in terms of the depth and breadth of coverage. The latter is quite a scholarly work and is also stretched over 380 pages.
In some way, because of its size, I feel this book can be excellent preamble to 'The Entrepreneurial Mindset.' If you seriously want to know how winning entrepreneurs strategise, read both books - and start with this one first!
