From the Author
Because of the interest in Ayurveda in the hearts of both practitioners and laymen and because of the demand, I have been teaching seminars on pulse diagnosis across the United States, England and at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In any system of medicine, pulse assessment is a matter of technical skill, subjective experience and intuition. Accuracy also depends upon the individual’s persistent practice and quality of sensitive awareness. Several teachers, gurus and yogis in India influenced my early education in pulse reading. Even though simplified descriptions of various conditions of the pulse are found in the standard Ayurvedic texts, the methods of examination are not given in detail. However, it is possible to learn these subjective methods of pulse examination that reveal the characteristics of the individual’s prakruti, vikruti and various doshic disorders and to verify their accuracy objectively.

The purpose of this book is to teach simplified techniques to students and to provide deep comprehensive information as well. Throughout my earlier Ayurvedic education, I also studied modern allopathic medicine and this knowledge has broadened my interpretation of pulse reading.

All of what I am sharing with you in this book may not be found in the standard Ayurvedic texts. However, all that I have included here is based upon Ayurvedic principles. I received this knowledge from my mentors in the Ayurvedic tradition and it has since unfolded in my heart through clinical observation and practice over the last 25 years.

This book will give guidelines to think about various ways of feeling, reading and gathering information through the pulse. It is quite difficult to put subjective experience into words. This is my sincere attempt to express these simple ways of feeling the pulse. I hope, dear readers, that you will love this humble effort.

About the Author
Dr. Lad brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and a Master of Ayurvedic Science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. For 3 years he served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune, India. He also held the position of Professor of Clinical Medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years. Dr. Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western Medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda. In 1979, he began traveling throughout the United States sharing his knowledge of Ayurveda, and in 1981, he returned to New Mexico to teach Ayurveda. In 1984, he founded and began as Director of The Ayurvedic Institute.

Dr. Lad is the author of numerous articles and several books; Ayurveda, The Science of Self Healing, co-author of The Yoga of Herbs and Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-Healing. His book, Secrets of the Pulse, The Ancient Art of Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis, presents this fascinating subject for the first time. His work from Harmony Books, The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies, is a compendium of classic Ayurvedic treatments for common and chronic ailments. His most recent book, The Textbook of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles, is the first of a four-volume set of textbooks covering the topics he teaches in his eight-month Ayurvedic Studies Program. Dr. Lad presently is the Director of The Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico and teaches the Ayurvedic Studies Program and, for more advanced study, the Gurukula Program as well as a program in India each year. Dr. Lad also travels throughout the world, consulting privately and giving seminars on Ayurveda; its history, theory, principles and practical applications.

I had wanted to learn this technic for several years now, being told it was impossible to learn without the presence of a teacher.
This book is easy to understand and impliment. I have been able to use many of the technics in this book with increasing accuracy, in just a few months. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this science.

Munro at the top of her game

Why has this woman never won the Booker prize? These short stories are as wonderful as any by Atwood, McEwan, or Chekhov. I finished each of these stories and wondered why the title of that story wasn't selected for the title of this collection. I must warn you, you will keep right on reading "just one more" until that sinking realization that you just read the last one makes you jump up to log on to Amazon and order another Munro title!

Munro is one of the best of our contemporary writers

Probably like you, I read - a lot. There is no doubt that Alice Munro is one of our best contemporary writers. I recently spent six weeks confined to a wheel chair. I re-read several of the Munro books and thought that I enjoyed them far more on the second reading than the first. That is always what is said about "the classics". The really great writers seem to get better with every re-reading. I hope that I can live long enough to re-read Munro's books for the third and fourth and fifth time. She is a very gifted writer.

A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.

Love that I can play things that sound like the classics

I have minimal piano playing skills, am an adult teaching myself.

I hate using the beginner's books with songs like "Mr. Turtle goes slow" or "The Blue Coyote." One, I have no idea if what I am am playing sounds right and well, they're childish.

So, I love that these are simple enough for me to attempt (not all are easy, but I'm working my skills up)and I can tell if I'm getting them to sound right (if I haven't heard the song I can youtube it. About 80% of the songs I can hear someone play although sometimes if the chosen selection is not the opening theme of the song I have difficulty finding it). Plus it's "grown up."

Definitely one of my favorite easy level books.

Excellent for What It Aspires To Be

I read many of the reviews here and wasn't sure if this book was what I was looking for. Would it be "too easy"? "Too hard"? "Too short?" "Too simplified"? Or, as many said, perfect for his/ her level.

Fortunately, for me it turned out to be just what I was looking for. But I do understand how difficult choosing the right level could be. This says it's a "Beginner's" book--not an "Intermediate's"--and I think that's right. You should be able to read music two octaves up from middle "C" and one octave below, but the base is simple--usually one or two notes at a time, many slow selections and almost every song is in the key of C or F.

Even as someone who doesn't sight read well, I can play the pieces from the beginning with both hands--slowly. This is a good level for me--feels very "doable" but also a challenge as my practices begin rather haltingly. I feel my sight reading is improving because the notation doesn't overwhelm a beginner with too many notes at a time.

Some people were frustrated that the pieces were short excerpts of classics--1-3 pages of music. (The notes are nice and large, by the way, which I found very helpful) For me, I really liked the shortness of the pieces because the easiest ones made good warmups and, since I don't sight read well, I appreciated the variety of options. Three pieces I recommend that I enjoyed and feel are among the easier ones are:

"Chopin's Nocturne in E flat" (arranged to be in C ). It has part of the accompaniment in the treble clef and part with bass so, while its simple bass and melody lines, it's good "thinking exercise" to switch between them as you play. Plus, it's a slow, pretty piece, nice to warmup with. Another good one for beginners (like me) is "Brahms Lullaby". And I liked "The Waltz of the Sugar Plum Fairy", too.

Nice variety--9 from Bach, 8 from Beethoven, 7 Chopin, 9 Mozart, 8 Tchaikovsky plus 1 or 2 each from Bartok, Brahms, Clementi, Debussy, Dvorak, Foster, Gluck, Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Liszt, MacDowell, Mendelsohn, Moussorgsky, Paderewski, Rameau, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Saint-Saens, Satie, Scarlatti, Schubert, Schumann, Scriabin, Sibelius, Strauss,Verdi, Vivaldi, and Wagner. A very nice variety--good as a refresher (many were familiar but not by name and someI -should- have known, but didn't).

There are also little "factoids" above each piece--a few sentences of interesting information about the music or the composer. Fingering suggestions are also included. I found this a very motivating and enjoyable book at my beginning level and great for warmups/improving sight reading in a pleasurable way.

OK very simple arrangements, good exercising value for a "middle-stage" beginner

These are significantly simplified short excerpts from classical masterpieces. If you want something longer and otherwise closer to the original, look elsewhere.
On the other hand, this book may work for beginners who want to supplement their technique development with musically meaningful exercises (often based on well-known classical melodies). It is probably way too much for early beginners and too little for "advanced beginners".
