Long-awaited doesn't begin to describe this fourth installment in bestseller Martin's staggeringly epic Song of Ice and Fire. Speculation has run rampant since the previous entry, A Storm of Swords, appeared in 2000, and Feast teases at the important questions but offers few solid answers. As the book begins, Brienne of Tarth is looking for Lady Catelyn's daughters, Queen Cersei is losing her mind and Arya Stark is training with the Faceless Men of Braavos; all three wind up in cliffhangers that would do justice to any soap opera. Meanwhile, other familiar faces—notably Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen—are glaringly absent though promised to return in book five. Martin's Web site explains that Feast and the forthcoming A Dance of Dragons were written as one book and split after they grew too big for one volume, and it shows. This is not Act I Scene 4 but Act II Scene 1, laying groundwork more than advancing the plot, and it sorely misses its other half. The slim pickings here are tasty, but in no way satisfying. (Nov.)

Martin’s manuscript for Feast of Crows was so long that his publisher relegated half the chapters to a fifth book due out in 2006, A Dance with Dragons. With only half the storylines and characters present from A Storm of Swords (2000), Feast of Crows should seem thin—but it’s so rich with characters, plot twists, and settings that a few critics thought the novel one of the best in the fantasy genre. Martin renders his characters—would-be queens, outlaws, priests, squires, ladies, and fools—with unusual depth and moral complexity, while placing their personal dramas within the epic sweep of lands lost and won. Though the book stands alone, readers will reap greater rewards by starting with the first of the series, A Game of Thrones.

The dust begins to settle.

Feast of Crows is perhaps the saddest book in the series, as characters struggle to recover from the war. On the battlefield the victors are clearly the Lannisters, along with numerous allies, but now the victors have to rebuild and replenish before the long winter arrives.
Feast of Crows is not the longest book in the series, but it can feel that way. In fact it’s literally half the story, with the events of Dance with Dragons occurring simultaneously. The book includes 10 new perspectives, and only 4 old ones; saving Tyrion, Daenerys, and Jon Snow for the next volume.
Cersei receives the lion’s share as she sets the stage for her regency, but audiences may find it hard to empathize with someone so arrogant and selfish.
Brienne of Tarth continues her quest for the Stark girls, but the audience already knows where they are, leaving us to only wonder how Brienne herself will fair at the end of her journey.
The book is full of new perspectives, giving audiences a greater understanding of the Iron Born Greyjoys, and the family Martell from the lands of Dorne, who demonstrate the merit of “staying out of it”.
The story is rich with background information about the various places in Westeros and Esos, but the various chapters read more like short stories in an anthology. The book functions as a transition, resolving the aftermath of the previous books and setting the stage for the climactic conclusion in Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring.

Do it! Read this series even if you already watched the show. The plots have major differences. There is so much more detail in the books since they are obviously longer than 10 hours per season. My favorite part was getting to know Cersei's dark thoughts, hee fears and paranoia. We get to know more about littlefinger plans. However, DO NOT read this book by itself. Read books 4 and 5 together. They cover events happening at the same time. You can find a reading guide online so you can mix the chapters and make sense of the story.

Rise of the Krakens and other new characters invigorate our favourite fantasy

Breathing new life in to his book, GRRM in A Feast for Crows: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Four broadened his Westeros world with new characters from the religious Sept, financial world, the water world, kindly holy brothers, river folks and temple folks of Braavos that don't speak the common tongue. Midway in the story I was greatly moved by the kind Septon Meribald who travelled great distance on his bare feet to minister the souls of common folks and to feed the hungry with his meagre supplies carried on his overworked donkey. He described how a man is broken by the hardship and cruelty of war in graphic and honest details. He could because he was a 'broken man' himself who had committed his share of sins in his life. More than that, he could therefore empathise with broken men and administer to them and to all folks he would meet on his path strewn with rocks, quick sand and marsh. Self contemplation, reflection, contrition, penitent prayers for sin atonement for sins are pervasive in this book making the world of Westeros even more like our real world where religion, morality and the concept of sin and hell is so central to us. Old characters like Arya & Sansa (Alayne) Stark, Sam Tarly and giantess Brienne of Tarth got new leases in life with new destinations and adventures. Although I did find Alayne's tale of putting up with the spoilt Lord Robin in the ice castle extremely irritating. GRRM also gave us more depth to pivotal characters like Queen Cersei and Ser Jamie with more glimpses into their pasts. Other veteran characters like Jon Snow, dragon Queen Daenery, Tyrion, and Lord Varys were sorely missed. Seemed like GRRM gave them long overdue respites although this caused me, and his ardent fans I believe, anxiety and longing like the aching heart missing his long time buddies. It was obvious that GRRM intended to keep us in suspense till his fifth instalment and perhaps beyond. At the end of Book 4, one feels more than acquanted with GRRM's fantasy Westeros that has become an increasingly complex world with many new characters spinning the increasingly entangled web of religious, historical, political, matrimonial and financial strings connecting our beloved characters and ones we love to hate. Rise of the Krakens and the prospect of their interface with the dragons is the most exciting new fantasy element in this fourth instalment. But the most satisfying moment was when the tide turned against Queen Cersei and her fate was left as a cliff hanger to usher in GRRM's A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5)
